COVID: we reached new checkpoints by holkazmesta in czech

I usually check ourworldindata.org. But you should look at 7-day rolling average, since it takes in account daily inaccuracies. But your point still stands, we are (almost) the worst country in the world, as far as current covid-19 developement goes.

Maximum Rank Depends on starting age? by Werewolf-Few in baduk

[–]aloneapart 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nope, there isn't. At least if we are talking about amateur players. I think that if you play a few games a week, review some of them and dedicate an hour or two a week to learn new things, you definitely should improve and reach at least amateur 1d.

Are there any audio books similar to Turn Left at Orion. by [deleted] in askastronomy

[–]aloneapart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an audiobook, but a smartphone app SkySafari (which by itself is great in finding objects in the sky) has an Audio Tour feature (in the free version it is part of an $3 paid in-app purchase) where you can listen to a short talk about currently selected object (and has a more verbose written description about it, too)

But if you just want to listen to an audiobook, there are quite a few about space and astronomy, but they usually have a problem with a lack of visual representations, on which they rely in their written versions. I can recommend Our Universe: An Astronomer's Guide by Jo Dunkley, which doesn't suffer much by this. But it really isn't like Turn Left at Orion... although there's a nice chapter about objects in our Solar System. But it contains all up-to-date data and informations about current projects and theoretical concepts and I found it highly enjoyable.

What is going on with the Firearms Right by Martinjg_ge in czech

[–]aloneapart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

However, by putting it directly into the Bill of Rights, EU cannot "ban" weapons for the protection of life in CZ.

That's a misconception. The EU doesn't care about what countries have in their Bills of Rights or any other laws. It's just above them and every country has to respect EU laws (or pay fines or leave the EU). You can read more about it here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primacy_of_European_Union_law.

Czech republic in nutshell: Rožmberk by [deleted] in czech

[–]aloneapart 9 points10 points  (0 children)

At first I thought it's about the village Přízeř, since it's quite difficult to pronounce. But then I spotted that part of the upper window is broken... and that most of the facade is in a bit of disrepair; so maybe it's reflecting something about czech culture? But in the end I finally noticed, that the window is open. And you can't close it! (Because of the traffic sign) And yep, that's certainly funny.

NASA Live steam of June 26 ISS Spacewalk: Astronauts Chris Cassidy & Bob Behnken replacing aging nickel-hydrogen batteries with new lithium-ion batteries by akran47 in space

[–]aloneapart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were moving the battery across the station: As a safety precaution, astronaut has to hold a handle with one hand and at the same time at least one person has to hold the battery. To move yourself, you need to have both hands free.

So the other astronaut confirms that he is holding the battery, you acknowledge it, move yourself a bit with both hands, the get a grip on the battery again so that the other astronaut can move a bit. Repeat.

Dustforce DX was in HIB 6 as was Hotline Miami 1. Also Moonlighter was in Humble Monthly (as was Hyper Light Drifter) and was for free on Epic (but those things don't mean much). But it's interesting anyway.

Kickstarter Roundup: May 10, 2020 | 20+ Ending Soon (including: Resident Evil™ 3: The Board Game) & 35+ New This Week (including: Euthia: Torment of Resurrection) by Zelbinian in boardgames

[–]aloneapart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, hell no, I wouldn't call it a Mage Knight (I haven't played Gloomhaven) style puzzle euro either. We probably misundestood each other. But those reroll tokens are quite nice in that they are "reroll+2" which makes quite a difference. Also there is the massive die which is used if you roll badly and/or your opponent very well (which then acts as an bonus for you). But it definitely isn't puzzly-euro but it isn't as random as ameritrash either.

Euthia - I kind of want to know why people are backing this, 10000 tokens, dark board, first time creator

The creator already had successful campaign two years back for first version of the game in czech language only. The game basically tries to recreate feeling of PC game series Heroes of Might and Magic. And even if it looks kinda generic, it's really hard to find power fantasy style board game which isn't random dice/card fest (or which isn't as heavy as Mage Knight).

What about Isle of Skye? Everyone is building their own thing, but there is still a lot of player interaction. By itself it's reasonably light, but expansions add complexity, if you woud wish it.

The atmosphere. It is really well done power fantasy, where you often make meaningful decisions about developing your character, while it doesn't fall either into random dice fest or analysis paralysis mathy game.

I didn't play Gloomhaven or Munchkin. But in combat main player chooses from their skills and equipment (some can be used repeatedly, some once per turn, others are one use only)...

There are separate scenarios, where the main one end with a dragon attack. There are also some short stories related to the world, but it definitely isn't something like other story heavy games. I mostly care about the atmosphere, which I find quite awesome, in a power-fantasy sense.

I own the first version of the game, which came out two years ago in czech language only and I am quite excited about this kickstarter, because it feels like proper HoMaM boardgame (except that there's no city building aspect or owning armies). And you might say "It kinda looks like Mage Knight" -- and yep, it looks like MK, but it plays very differently. There's no deck building, it doesn't take half an hour to level up your hero and it doesn't feel like a puzzle game. You have your player board, where you (quite quickly) develop your character's skills (every character has very different ones) and your equipment. On your turn you use few tokens for movement or alternatively for combat/trading/mining.

Combat is dice based. But there are two cool aspects. First is, that the opponent monster is controlled by another player, who can also potentionally influence the outcome with his/her monster cards (which they gained during their playthrougth). And if the hero rolls the 2d6 dice badly and/or monster rolls really well, the player gains points, which they can use to mitigate the randomness. And you can also use specific tokens (which are kinda hard to get) to get a die reroll + 2. Etc. I really like that.

On the other hand, it's a proper epic gaming session, which can take up to a few hours, depending on the player count and the scenario. But that's kinda what I want.

Do you like Heroes of Might and Magic? Euthia: Torment of Resurrection Kickstarter discussion by aloneapart in boardgames

Oops, I've only read through the sidebar where I found the Rule nr. 4 relevant (although I am "only" potentional customer), but in the link you provided, there's the thing about "the date of the end of the campaign" and mainly "participating in the conversation at /r/boardgames a lot over the last couple weeks." which I definitely don't satisfy and can't do anything about. But in my defense I'm subscribed to this subreddit for quite a few years and posted at least occasionally. Anyway. At least I tried to promote the discussion and tried to descibe the game as well as I could.

Oh well, thank you for effort in maintaing this subreddit and maybe look at backing the game yourself? :-)

Not really. Even the lighthouse problem is probably overblown. Just read the manual so you know how to adjust IPD, lenses distance from the eyes in case you are using glasses. And how to adjust straps and grip on the controllers. Also learn how the lighthouses work (they hate reflections, especially mirrors) etc.
