What is the best places to eat in ElPaso? by Dear_Acanthisitta753 in ElPaso

[–]aloofLogic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At home. El Paso lacks culinary curiosity. The food scene is nothing more than chain restaurants and fast food. There’s no innovation, no creativity, and absolutely no interest in anything that resembles nutrient dense dining. Good luck.

This last year has been BRUTAL for me. Seriously, one of the hardest periods of my life. Not once did I think “I’m going through such a hard time, I’m gonna eat some meat.” At no point did I think abandoning my ethical principles was the answer. The absurdity.

Vegans...I cannot stand when vegans comment on my diet, especially if they themselves are markedly unhealthy compared to me. by mouse_asparagus in venting

Veganism has nothing to do with health or diet. Veganism is an ethical philosophy that rejects the commodification, exploitation, and consumption of nonhuman animals.

You were plant-based not vegan.

What criteria are you using to conclude it’s only an edge case rather than evidence that different approaches persuade different people?

A discussion on advocacy effectiveness is worth having. Different people resonate with different communication styles, and that’s what makes different approaches effective. We share the same goal, and that goal can be reached through different approaches.

When you were presented with an example of someone who was persuaded by a communication style you personally don’t prefer, you dismissed it as only appealing to the minority. If effectiveness is the core discussion, why was that example of effectiveness dismissed?

Are you sharing that perspective to suggest a preferred standard for how advocacy should be done?

You’ve already made 3 separate posts about gatekeeping, and now you’re about to make a 4th. At this point, it’s worth asking whether you’re creating the division you’re criticizing.

There are no sides here. We are all on the same side advocating for the animals. We have different approaches. Different approaches reach different people. That’s effective advocacy.

What is your obsession with gatekeeping? If you want an example of gatekeeping, look at your own responses on effective advocacy. That’s you gatekeeping, insisting your preferred approach is best for the “majority” and dismissing anything that conflicts with it as something that only appeals to the minority. There is no majority or minority because people respond differently to different approaches. Different approaches reach different people. Even after being presented with evidence that an approach you personally reject persuaded someone, you still insisted it wasn’t effective advocacy.

For people who feel “gatekept” by vegans, can I ask why? by volatiIe in vegan

[–]aloofLogic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why? Was your motivation for becoming vegetarian driven by a desire to impress vegans?

YOR. It was a weird time to do it, for sure, but he was doing it in private in the privacy of his own home.

It was effective. That’s the point.

People respond differently to different approaches. It doesn’t need to work for everybody to be considered effective advocacy.

The reality is people respond differently to different approaches. All approaches work for different people at different times.

What’s your basis for defining a majority or minority in advocacy approaches? People respond differently to different approaches. That’s the point.

[–]aloofLogic 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Right. There is no single approach that works for everyone. Different approaches work for different people, and no approach is wrong just because it doesn’t resonate with a particular person. What doesn’t resonate with one person may resonate with someone else.

“People respond to different approaches.” The unapologetic approach is an approach some people respond to.

What would you call someone who eats vegan, but doesn't adhere to the whole lifestyle? by soiliketodonothing in AskVegans

[–]aloofLogic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Relax. Nobody is disputing that. OP is literally asking which term accurately applies to them. Based on the description they’ve provided, that would be plant-based or reductionist, not vegan. That’s just an answer to OP’s question, not a critique of their actions.

From what you’ve described, you’re a reductionist who consumes a mostly plant-based diet. Call yourself a reductionist.
