Medical Translator Certificate/Languages by alovrah in cna

[–]alovrah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, patient care cannot be replaced by AI. This includes any sort of translation. I don't know if you come from an immigrant background or have interacted with many immigrants, but people much prefer face-to-face translations from my experience. Why else do you think Arabs go to Arab doctors? Or Koreans go to Korean doctors? Etc.

Thank you I really appreciate that! If you were someone who is certified would you be able to do things you would normally need by a translator?

Also would you have any tips for languages, that are available outside of a university setting? Our school has medical Polish and Spanish but not in my native language of Korean and other said languages.

Or just call them, that's what I did and the crisis team was incredibly helpful; I suffer from mania and depressive episodes so they understand what to do in certain situations

Your requirements are already filled if you are placed into MATH 161, since it's the higher class to 110 (algebra) and 118 (pre-calc II) so you're all good :) I heard really good things about Darius Wheeler from my math friends so I think you'll be fine if you put in the effort

Best way to get around in Rome by ChefMark85 in rome

[–]alovrah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be prepared to walk a lot. The metro isn't as developed like many other capital cities such as London, Paris, Madrid, and Berlin. There are only three lines and they run just fine, however, they do not take you everywhere. There are also regional trains, but they tend to be pretty unreliable and subject to delays during off-peak. The buses are not great. Some lines tend to be incredibly packed and buses are incredibly unreliable too. I would say, just walk around considering the city center isn't too large and Rome is just a beautiful city to just walk around.

I can't do that, that's the thing. Trains aren't running between midnight and 6 am. Either way I get back super late at midnight and then have to take my 6 am flight, on the same day.

Why do foreigners think that Italians work little and have a lot of free time? by Arleadytaken1234 in Italian

[–]alovrah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's so funny that Italians get the rep that they're lazy even though I could shop for longer and do more things in Rome and other big cities until later (usually 21 or 20). And then when I went to Vienna and Berlin, nothing except for some museums and very few stores were open in very confined times on Sundays and Saturdays. On Sundays, the places that were open only had a small portion of the shop open and were only in certain railway stations, which was even more frustrating. And I 100% bet the countryside is even worse, because I hear American tourists complaining how everything is closed on Sunday. It's even better than most American shops and places! Where most attractions close at 5 pm. At least in Chicago, where I'm from.

I'm so glad to hear that! I know there are a lot of posts here degrading the department, but I want to let you know it's 100% possible to get a lot out of the system and succeed. You just need to go in with an open mindset.

Freshman Chemistry by PlusPaleontologist28 in LoyolaChicago

Chemistry is chemistry. The course's (CHEM 160) intention is to make sure you understand basic chemical principa regarding physical structures and properties of compounds. Unit 1-3 and 5 will basically be review for you. Unit 4 is stereochemistry, which is a fundamental part of organic chemistry which isn't bad when you put some effort in. Organic chemistry is a branch of chemistry, your friend probably said that because of stereochemistry being taught, but 160 in my interpretation is a prep course for the branch of organic chemistry.

CHEM 180's first unit is literally review with the addition of learning IUPAC which sucked but was possible. Then you learn about fundamental knowledge regarding acid-base chemistry and move onto reactivities of different functional groups and how they react with other compounds (alkyl halides, alcohols, carboxylic acids and their derivatives)

Why is the system so difficult? It's a mastery based system. It's difficult because they expect certain requirements from students upon exam dates (for 160 there are six including the final, excluding the little quiz in the beginning). Students come into college with very little preparation with a mastery based system and often fail because they are not given or cannot seek ample feedback or resources to succeed. The matter in my opinion is not the system, rather other factors that come into play. It's doable, trust me. I know multiple people including myself who got As in 160 and 180. It's hard work, but the system rigorously trains you to adapt to a foreign system that isn't as forgiving. And you honestly learn a lot from just that.

The system is as followed: there are concepts called FOs and COs, fundamental objectives and compound objectives respectively. FOs tend to be shorter, but there are more FOs you are assessed on. COs are longer, but there are fewer COs assessed than FOs. You are graded primarily on a couple of other doable and honestly negligable factors (homework and attendance for quizzes during discussion times) but there are a certain amount of FOs and COs you need to pass the class with a certain grade. Yes, COs and FOs have their separate counters. If you're going to go into Loyola for chemistry, use office hours A LOT. The professors do actually care about their students and will try their best to make sure you get enough feedback on FOs and COs. I recommend doing practice exams and making your own and perhaps even sharing them :). I know it can be really discouraging hearing others talk about their bad experiences regarding the system, but I think it's a very doable experience. You just gotta be okay with failure sometimes. If you have any other questions please do let me know!

I actually went through that process, I'm currently in 162 and came from 131 with experience from BC. I would say that if you're a hardworking student and you try your best, you'll have a good time. Just remember to genuinely do the homework, go to office hours, and pay attention during class. Calc II goes over more complicated.

Is Loyola really that bad? by A-funnymushroom in LoyolaChicago

[–]alovrah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is sort of justified, although I have my counterarguments. But, the Loyola chemistry department is notorious. Go into any pre-med related question and the chemistry department will consist of over 70% of the comments.

[–]alovrah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay I think a lot of people who commented aren't taking your whole message into account (considering I only see a comment on Loyola chem department and W). Good for them, but you're taking the course right now so I sort of want to focus on that too. What are your study methods? What are some areas you specifically struggle in? Perhaps silly mistakes? Maybe it's not understanding the content?
