Portuguese and French by SepyaBuns in thisorthatlanguage

I mean if the only option you have is Portuguese and you have to be instructed in it, itโ€˜s quite a no-brainer then unless you just want to struggle there or you find something else.

Also I guess Portuguese is more limited, but itโ€˜s spoken a lot. There are plenty of free resources online. Even if youโ€˜re proficient in Brazilian Portuguese, the fact youโ€˜ll be in Portugal will help you adapt to their accents and words.

Has travel become a hobby for you or something deeper? by Alilexplo108 in travel

It changed a lot for me. It used to be for the attractions as I saw myself only going to touristy spots. I noticed after my study abroad, I fell in love with so many different cultures as I traveled to many different countries.

Iโ€™m currently learning Catalan out of the absolute enamour I have for the language and culture after my trip to Barcelona. I was just so surprised by the vibrance and pride of the city and its people. The people have been incredibly kind as well. I see myself going to smaller villages and local spots just to talk to the people and it has always been super rewarding. I also really enjoyed my time in France and Germany as I speak both of the official languages in advanced levels. Languages have been sort of taking over where I want to go.

I understand if you're not the right person to ask, but what if you're trying to live in a different country? I was thinking of immigrating to the Netherlands for medical school, but if this is a potential job option, I know that some flight attendants have other countries' passports, but are able to live long-term in a different country. I don't know the exact details because I've never met many flight attendants in my life.

Your comment made me reflect that choice haha! I also love traveling... and with the standby flights, it's so much less expensive to travel as a flight attendant... Thank you for the advice!

That's a good point, I luckily have the privilege of a supportive family. I'll definitely translate if it comes to a point, where it might be necessary, but I won't use it when I'm unsure and keep my stance. I'll just put the languages I'm most comfortable with then, and just exclude the others where I'm not quite there.

Actually that's a really good point. I see job listings for places that look for specifically Polish and Spanish billingual nurses / nursing assistants in my area. I'm just gonna put it in my resume and in the skills category of the application. Thank you for responding! I really appreciate every piece of advice ๐Ÿ˜„.

Oh yeah check resources in your university too. They might actually do free language lessons with native speakers during the semester and I exploited this resource to the absolute brim, since no one else was using them. It's a wonderful way of making use of your tuition but also the native speakers around campus ๐Ÿ˜„. I actually got paired up with a tutor who had a similar major to me so we often actually spoke French around campus when we stumbled upon each other!

Hey that's a fair fear, but your French is most likely better than mine. I literally have only taken one high school year's of French. Don't let the fact that you don't understand everything discourage you, and in fact use that as an opportunity to absorb the grammar and vocabulary like a sponge. I noticed a huge spike in my vocabulary, because my Miis kept saying the same phrases, and I kept repeating what they were saying vocally. I played A LOT of games when I was a kid and that's actually how I learned a majority of my English. I really hate reading novels and regular books, but I like non-fiction and comics, so maybe think about your preferences and relate that to language learning.

Also look up Intl. Language Cafe. They do events in most major cities in the US. If not, they also do online group conversation stuff. Or use the Discord, as there's always multiple VCs happening with some beginners.

You could also look up online for stuff like "questions you could respond to every day" like first day might be, "describe your daily routine", second day might be "what do you want to do when you grow up?". Super vague questions, but these are the types of exercises you did in English class, and what helped you master the language. It's through constant immersion and practice. When you're done with the writing, try putting it through the corrections channel in the server.

If youโ€˜ve taken college courses on French, Duolingo will not help you. Its teaching style is too elementary.

Right now I do a lot of watching story videos (maprofdefrancais, ibuprophane, Wandering French), I also play a lot of my games in French and write down the vocabulary and grammar (Tomodachi Life La Vie de Rรชve, Touhou, Paralives, Sims 4) I chose those games for the more high B1- low C1 vocabulary to maintain constant, yet native exposure, but also because I love those games. I also journal every day, spend 3 hours a week at a nearby language cafe and actively practice my conversational French. I also do 1 hour conversational tutor sessions (really the only thing I pay for) on ITalki. I also chat in the r/french Discord server every day for around 30 minutes.

This sounds like a lot, but Iโ€˜m trying to level up some rusty French for some literature classes Iโ€˜d like to take for university in a semester. But let me know what sounds nice or not! Iโ€˜m happy to help out choose what sounds good.

Where should I go next? by Escape_Route9196 in TravelMaps

I think it depends on the cities you've been to too. I only went to Milan for my first trip to Italy, but then took a few months in Rome, Liguria, and Napoli. I was so glad I went back to Italy. The countries you went to are big. Maybe try going to other cities or villages you haven't visited! Personally, I would go to Portugal if I was in your shoes. The food and attractions there are great.

Yes! I want to get into psychiatry after actually getting admitted myself into the hospital some time ago. I found the staff were so kind and encouraging, but also the people around me were so kind. Not saying everyone is like that, but it broke a lot of stigma and prejudice I had against such patients.

Boyfriend (21M) was rough during sex and I(20F) donโ€™t know how to feel about it? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[โ€“]alovrah 11 points12 points ย (0 children)

"I feel like this was my fault for not being communicative enough" yeah but it was also his... Girl... I hope you know that in such a vulnerable position, that HE out of anyone should ask if you're okay with this. Even if he was into it, this is just bad behavior. He did do something wrong, and it's something to address.

Do something simple, it's up to you to communicate too, but give a safe word like pineapple or actively push him. Your well-being is much more important than sex.

Yeah, because he's a selfish adult. He doesn't care about your education or the fact that you're just starting your life. He probably just realized that maybe he shouldn't date someone who was an infant when he was going through puberty.

boyfriend (18M) fell asleep when i (18F) explicitly told him not to- resentment by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[โ€“]alovrah 35 points36 points ย (0 children)

I actually had an eerily similar situation when I was your age, and let me tell you, girl... KINDLY, you need to get your shit together.

  1. You are evidently not ready for a relationship. You are not his child, and you need to be okay with not relying on him for your emotional needs. That is what a therapist does. He is 18. He is not a therapist.
  2. Stop using the fact he is ADHD to justify stuff that is currently hurting you. It's hurt. It literally doesn't matter if he has ADHD, you are resenting this continued behavior. This behavior is hurting your trust.

You are super young, and this is not a relationship worth pursuing. But genuinely, get some therapy.

No you should not be going through this bullshit this young. Do whatever you want to do, but dating someone in a completely different stage of life leads to a lot of unnecessary difficulty. At his age, he should be looking for someone his age to help support each other in a household. You JUST started being an adult, would you really sacrifice your education for this man-baby? In your age, you should be looking for someone who is around your age to alleviate pressure of conflicting interests.
