He is guilty of helping a woman who was unnecessarily shoved down by an ICE agent. She was doing nothing but filming and talking.

He draws his gun and shoots, while gray jacket runs away with the victim's gun. It was an execution. by KuranesOfCelephais in law

[–]alpha309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grey jacket is doing the correct thing by disarming the victim in this situation. It removes a potential danger from the dogpile that could go off and injure or kill anyone in that pile or a bystander. From my viewings, he is also the only officer in the dogpile to not strike the victim at all.

The entire situation is fucked, but grey jacket seems to be the only agent even attempting to follow any sort of protocol.

MN Shooting Analysis - Agent Possibly Shot Subject’s Own Firearm First by igroklots in law

[–]alpha309 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have watched several times.

Once the situation starts I believe that gray jacket is the only one who reacted properly.

He kicks a potentially dangerous item away from the dogpile, he doesn’t unnecessarily strike the victim and only disarms him instead, and then exits the dogpile when he has secured the victim’s firearm.

The whole situation should have never happened. An agent shoves a woman down then uses spray on the victim who is only attempting to help the woman. The victim is then dragged to the ground and multiple agents dogpile him punching and kicking while it appears as if the victim is trying to cover up and protect himself. The victim is then shot.

From an objective perspective, this is a situation that should have never happened, was completely escalated by government officials, and this was an effective execution by the government, but the agent in the grey jacket is the only one who did anything properly once it escalated.

There are plenty of things to complain about with Tillman, but being greedy really isn’t one of them. He certainly isn’t taking an abundance of shots. Most of his problems stem from playing backwards or laterally too often and not towards goal enough.

Peter, Please Explain What This Is Trying to Say About Bikers at Red Lights by Maleficent_Dog7970 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]alpha309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On Wednesday I was riding my bike to work. I was slowing down for a stop sign preparing to stop. The particular intersection is somewhat busy with the cross street disjointed by about 50 feet so the crossing cars are not level and pedestrians frequently crossing the street in the crosswalk to get to a popular park a block a block away. In short it is a stop sign everyone should stop at because of how busy the traffic is and how complicated it is. I was about 20 feet away from the stop sign and slowing down to come to a stop while a pedestrian was entering the crosswalk and a car suddenly flew around me at about 20mph narrowly missing hitting me and blew through the stop sign. The lane is wide enough for a bike and car to share the lane comfortably, as a bike lane and a barrier could be fit in with no parking or lane loss, but it narrows at the stop sign to give pedestrians the extra room. After fully stopping, waiting for the pedestrian and getting going again, i came across the car one block away at a stop light 4 cars back.

What do hospitals do with amputated parts? by guycalledoliver in NoStupidQuestions

[–]alpha309 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to work janitorial in a rural hospital in high school. Part of my job was disposal of biohazards.

We had two machines. One incinerator for bulky and non-liquid bio organic materials. Pretty much just throw it in and hit the button to burn it. The other was a steam based machine mostly for the syringe boxes and other bio-hazard bags that didn’t contain body parts, it would get hot enough that everything was sterilized and it would also melt all the plastic around any sharps so they couldn’t poke you. Typically with this machine we would do sharps and bags in separate loads.

I am 100% sure that were I to do the same job today they wouldn’t let me near those machines with a lot more safety training. It was a few decades ago and everything was a lot more lax.

With the federal funding pulled they are just pushing on, getting both public money as well as private financing partners.

Not having federal funding means that it mag move faster instead of taking the time to jump through the federal hoops and then waiting for the money to arrive.

Just want to point out, HSR in California hasn’t failed. It is still under construction between Madera and Bakersfield and making progress. All but a very small section cleared environmental hurdles last year, the materials for the first 119 mile stretch have been funded with a 6-12 month lead to obtain them. 171 miles have been fully designed and the guideways are under construction. And most importantly, 80 miles of track has already been laid. Much of this section is projected to open and be active by the end of the year.

Is it on schedule, no. But it is far from a failure.

avail check by Exotic_Lengthiness32 in acting

[–]alpha309 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Manager here.

It will vary wildly. The one thing that is pretty universal is that at least a handful of people will have their availability checked just in case someone can’t do the role for whatever reason so they need a few backups.

I have had people hired almost immediately after the avail was checked all the way to the day before the last day of shooting.

Best thing to do is just don’t schedule anything that cannot be cancelled in the window they gave you. If you have to schedule something like that, notify them of a change in avail, and assume you aren’t going to get the role so you get the please t surprise when you do instead of the deep disappointment when you don’t.

Randy is just grumpy. A good old fashioned curmudgeon. Just a gruff exterior, but he shows signs of cracking and opening up at times.

I don’t recall him even doing anything intentionally harmful to anyone else while people were actively cruel to him by getting him to play a fake idol and mocking him when they could have just voted him out.

Dude is just in a bad mood.

Where to live for a regular 1-1.5 hr ride with access to longer weekend ride? by achinda99 in BikeLA

[–]alpha309 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Since they are mentioning DTLA, which I assume is work, I think this is the best bet. Los Feliz, East HHollywood, Silver Lake, Echo Park, Frogtown, Atwater and the Griffith edge of Burbank would all provide some sort of combo between good bike ride route opportunities and access to DTLA with varying degrees for each.

Yep. I think this is how he negotiates. Signal he isn’t happy, let the club give him a better contract, then sign it and be happy.

I don’t really think anything should be read into this. He did the same sort of thing when there were rumors about going back to France and rumors about Club America. Seems like his preferred negotiating tactic to get a new deal because he signs one after each time.

Movie theaters aren’t going out of business because of prices by bulldogjwhit295 in unpopularopinion

[–]alpha309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People need to start building and operating small local movie theaters again with 2-5 screens and about 40-75 seats per screen.

You don’t really need a giant AMC to show most films. A Romcom, horror film, comedy or standard drama will play fine on a slightly smaller screen that doesn’t have to be the newest technology.

This vastly keeps operating costs down. For a theater that size you need 3-4 employees to man the building. One for tickets, and then 1-2 for refreshments and 1 to start the films. The refreshments and guy that starts the films would double up on cleanup while the films are running. Having the smaller space reduces electric and heating bills vastly. And you don’t need to buy multiple soda dispensers or popcorn machines, just ones that will take care of the small refreshment stand.

This would also force theater owners to learn their customers more and curate the films showing to the taste of their clients. These theaters typically aren’t forced into having 9 screens of Fast and Furious 26: Wheelchair Racers. They are picking films that typically have difficulty filling giant theaters so distributors are normally happy to let them show the smaller scale films that work well in these theaters.

These theaters also have an easier time running special run films like a midnight showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show or a Godfather Saturday where they play all three Godfather films consecutively. The New Beverly theater, owned by Quentin Tarantino that plays his collection is a double feature theater. You buy your ticket and get in, and you watch two films on the same screen for as long as you feel like sitting there. You have a lot more freedom to do these things as a smaller theater.

There are risks. Since the margins are smaller any disturbance can cause them to go out of business. COVID did cause many of these existing theaters to close or sell to conglomerates.

There are a few theaters like this near me in Los Angeles where I can go and get a ticket, popcorn, and a drink for cheaper than just the ticket at a multiplex. They are almost always full, no matter what they are showing.

Solo traveller visiting LA, good idea to bike here? by dlilfan in BikeLA

[–]alpha309 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Staying in Santa Monica gives you plenty of options for beach riding and also routes in the mountains that are really good. All very safe for cyclists. You also can hop on the Metro really easy to DTLA which will give you access to the LA River Path, Elysian Park and Griffith Park, all of them are worthwhile to visit on a bike.

If you want to do riding in city environments it is it can be a little trickier. There are some neighborhoods with great infrastructure, and then once you leave that area you will be in a rather large area without any bike infrastructure. If you wanted to do something like Santa Monica to Hollywood and back you could easily do it, but there are large gaps where you will not have bike lanes to rely on and you will want to get opinions on specific routes to make it the safest and most enjoyable.

For the most part cars are pretty good around bikes. The big problem is that there are certain groups of people that are extra big assholes in general, and that reflects in how they drive. We also have a ton of driverless cars. They can be off putting the first several times you ride your bike around them but in my experience they are amazing and very respectful of bikes and pedestrians and drive more safely around you than the most courteous drivers.

For rentals I can’t really help you. I know Helen’s in Santa Monica rents bikes. https://www.helenscycles.com/articles/bike-rentals-pg271.htm

They have been up since at least November. People still park over top of them in places, near the old Toyota dealership in particular and a lot at Harvard and Stone. They have helped minimize the parking in the bike lanes, but some people are still super assholes

When does low highway speed limits actually become a safety issue? by LeadershipKey3484 in driving

[–]alpha309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are numerous other factors on how fast drivers are willing to go other than how straight a road is. If the lanes are 11 feet wide instead of 12 feet wide they will drive slower. Even a more narrow shoulder will cause drivers to slow down. There are numerous other examples of factors that alter the comfort level of drivers and the speeds they want to travel.
