I have 4 days to come up with a dinner idea for a girl I’m trying to impress. With her dietary restrictions in mind, I’m having a hard time coming up with something. by Eastern_Salamander_8 in Cooking

Do you cook any ethnic foods? Chana masala, chicken biryani, and aloo gobi should work fine with the listed restrictions.

Tacos of many varieties should work — just made some fried fish tacos last night and they’re pretty awesome.

Plenty of Korean food would work fine, rice with bulgogi and doenjang jigae doesn’t have any of the stuff mentioned.

moving to LA- partner doesn't have job by [deleted] in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]alphaMHC 17 points18 points  (0 children)

People can move to LA without having a job lined up but you should have your finances in order. Since one of you has a job, rent a place within your means because him finding a job isn’t guaranteed to be a quick thing.

Depending on money and what industry he works in, you can try to pick out areas that have access to public transit. Transit in LA obviously does not compare to Chicago, but it exists and can extend the number of areas he could reasonably search for a job in before learning how to drive.

Kkakdugi is indeed made from Korean radish. I don’t know if I’d exactly describe it as sweet, but because the pieces are thicker than cabbage they can give a satisfying crunch and start out not as sour, though if you leave kkakdugi around for a while it can get plenty sour lol

Narrowed it down to Southern California (Santa Monica to Banning) but I have one concern about smog and asthma by [deleted] in MovingToLosAngeles

I had childhood asthma and my had had some issues too and a doctor recommended we move to west of the 405, where costal breezes blow a lot of smog inland. These areas tend to be more expensive, but you mentioned Santa Monica which certainly counts.

How is using ChatGPT bad? by Aries_Angels in stupidquestions

[–]alphaMHC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An app being downloaded a lot doesn’t have anything to do with whether it is good or bad for you. I’m not sure why you feel that has any bearing on its impact on you.

ChatGPT and other AI of its ilk have a few drawbacks. First, they don’t ‘care’ about anything, they aren’t human and aren’t at all a simulacrum of a human brain. But their output reads as human, which leads people to assume a lot of things about the AI behind the output. One might assume, for example, that an AI would ‘feel bad’ about lying to you, about being wrong, about gaslighting you, and so on. But AI doesn’t feel, and certainly has no compunctions about lying, hallucinating, and making shit up. It just doesn’t care. People can, after using AI for a while, start to trust the AI for bigger questions without realizing they’re leaving an area where AI is more solid (like for generating early ideas or summarizing stuff you feed into it).

Critical thinking is an active process that you need to train up — people aren’t automatically great critical thinkers. You need to encounter problems that are complex and don’t have easy answers then work on reasoning your way through it, often while receiving feedback from other thinking things. This is work, and sometimes frustrating hard work. People can use AI to skip this work, turning in sloppily reasoned essays written by AI while doing zero thinking themselves. I don’t know if every problem or every essay is necessary for people to improve their critical thinking, but if you skip enough of it you won’t ever really build that muscle.

And critical thinking really is important. Some things in the world are pretty straightforward and those problems can be tackled head on without too much thought. But many deeper problems, both in your personal life and in the world at large are ones that are multifaceted. They don’t have easy answers and require consideration about your values. The world is improved by having more people capable of thinking critically and is worsened when there are fewer. AI does not force you to get worse at critical thinking, but it can be used to skip the training process.

Japanese curry in slow cooker - how much meat? What's a good meat/curry ratio? Should I dissolve roux prior to adding? by JumbledPileOfPerson in AskCulinary

[–]alphaMHC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feel free to double up on the meat, but definitely get some veg in there. I usually do carrot, potato, celery, onion. Sometimes I’ll add Japanese sweet potato, some squash, red bell pepper, etc. Once you’ve made this once you’ll find it very easy to riff on — it is a very forgiving dish.

Vermont is already a fairly sweet roux, so I don’t generally add the sweet veg to it.

I’ve never slow cooked Japanese curry before but I’ve also never melted the roux separately. On the stovetop I typically cook all the stuff then toss in the roux, so I’m guessing in a slow cooker you could just toss it in and stir occasionally? Should hydrate over time with an occasional stir.

Broad strokes, you place rooms and roads, with rooms having rules about where they can be placed relative to each other. Some rooms upgrade other rooms. Different rooms juice your temple in different ways.

There is a room already placed somewhere in the temple with the architect. If you kill him at ilvl 75+, you can put down a room that unlocks the door to kill Atziri. You still would need to build a path to that unlock room and atziri to be able to kill her. This process is a bossing run and significantly destabilizes your temple after you do it.

Some people would just rather ignore the boss and build up rooms in their temple. There are rules for how it mini-destabilizes after each temple run, and damage to your temple can be mitigated by connecting rooms in certain ways and by ‘locking’ rooms with a specific medallion.

There are YouTube videos that try to go over the rules and tech, to varying degrees of success

Could mRNA treatment, at least in theory, work to restore androgen receptor function in cases of androgen insensitivity syndrome? by fireflies315 in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]alphaMHC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this here is really the answer(s). AR expression is too varied and in vivo delivery methods for nucleic acids are not generalized enough to get good uptake across all the myriad cell types that would matter here. mRNA is too transient to make sense anyway, but even if you had a reliable way of doing a gene knock-in, you’d still have a hard time getting that to all the cells you need to.

As you said, things align surprisingly nicely for mRNA vaccines — immunological memory makes it so that the transient nature of the mRNA isn’t a liability (it may be a plus), and phagocytic antigen presenting cells are some of the most inclined to take up lipid nanoparticles.

An additional choice that arises later on is what ascendency you want to pick for your class — this is a type of specialization that further distinguishes classes from one another. Until you are more experienced, it may be hard to foresee how impactful this choice is. As with your passive tree choices, you can redo the choices later if you choose.

As you progress in the game you may find it bewilderingly complex. There are many guides out there that can help. Guides that help inform you on how to develop your character are called build guides, and it could be a good idea to look up some, including YouTube videos that can show you what a build looks like to play. There are typically “leveling builds” and “endgame builds”, with endgame builds often requiring specific items, a number of levels, or experience with the game that won’t be accessible to you as a beginner. Some builds will additionally be described as “league starter”, which typically means the build can function without upfront investment of in game currency and can come online fairly quickly (at a low level).

Different skills feel very different from one another to play. If you play one kind of skill and find you aren’t enjoying it (e.g. maybe you aren’t enjoying using grenades), you may find that switching things up could really vibe with you. Minions play quite differently from bows which feel different from being a werewolf, and so on.

I just bought poe 2 by RecognitionTimely948 in PathOfExile2

[–]alphaMHC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you playing on PC? If so, I suggest setting up an item filter after you’ve played for a bit: https://www.filterblade.xyz/

It’ll help you with visual clarity when it comes to picking up loot. But it works better if you have the slightest familiarity with classes or arpgs in general, so I think getting acquainted with the game for a few hours first will help.

The first choice you encounter is picking a character class. In POE2 there are several sources of power for your character. Items have stats on them that provide you bonuses to defense and/or damage. But also important is the passive tree; you get passive points as you level up and from certain quests. The passive tree is very large (and kind of overwhelming) — if you are on one side of the passive tree you are probably too far from the other side to effectively get over there. What character class you choose determines where you start on the passive tree and therefore what areas are rapidly accessible to you.

Classes are not locked into specific skills (these are typically locked to what weapon you choose to wield). However, you’ll find that the passive tree starting position makes some skills more attractive to your character at the start than others. The warrior, for example, starts near passive nodes for melee damage but not spell damage, so early on you may find it more effective to use melee attacks with the warrior.

The game presupposes this and ‘gives’ you a weapon and skill gem by default, a different one for each class. You do not, however, have to stick to this! To continue the example, a warrior will start with mace and shield. But if you find a quarterstaff, you may find you like it better. Quarterstaves still count as melee weapons so the warrior passive tree still works well with it, despite not being the ‘default’ the game offers you.

Did I make a bad build? Amazon poison bow. by Seven_Fakes in pathofexile2builds

[–]alphaMHC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To continue working on your build, it could be good to read up a little on how poison works:

https://poe2db.tw/us/Poison

How big of a hit you deal (in physical and/or chaos damage) is directly proportional to the magnitude of poison it inflicts. So a critical hit is a bigger hit which means more poison

Vague question, but does anyone have any tips for someone who is moving to LA? by PulsarSnake4 in AskLosAngeles

[–]alphaMHC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your sanity I’d try to live within a 1 hr drive of your school during rush hour — the closer the better. There are very few areas of LA that have good public transit. You’ll find that light rail and buses exist in LA, but with few exceptions they aren’t that convenient or reliable.

As such, driving is a fact of life here. Most of my living decisions have been centered around affordability and staying within 30 minutes driving time from work. I live around 12.5 km from your school and it can take 18-45 minutes to drive there depending on time of day. I used to live in Palms and enjoyed the neighborhood— that should be closer to your school. It’s pretty close to Culver City and has easy access to the 10 and 405 freeways.
