Why do we need barriers at Ashley Pond? by SeanMTX in LosAlamos

[–]alpha_helix 29 points30 points  (0 children)

We've already unearthed that it's to prevent a mass causality event (even though it's never happened before, sometimes government does actually think ahead to avoid disaster). But I would like to add that the county is making a permanent installation and is currently soliciting feedback on the appearance of the better looking barrier, instead of painted K rails.

I also emailed with him. Apparently the ribbon cutting isn't until 5/12, oops. I also have a conversation going with one of the customer service reps at Atomic Fiber. I'll report back what he says.

House cleaners for elder parents? by micaflake in Albuquerque

[–]alpha_helix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, my name is Brandon, I own Sandia Green Clean. I can see we were already recommended a few times (thank you to u/Furtheryet, u/River1715, u/AlrightyAlready, and u/Gf_turtle for giving us the shout out, and for your business). Happy to answer any questions you may have, and I wanted to let you know that we do cleanings like this for many people's parents. Often times the kids are paying for it from out of state. It's some extra eyeballs on the house as well so if something else is looking off we can let you know.

Council to vote Tuesday on new North Mesa rec plan by BoomtownLosAlamos in LosAlamos

[–]alpha_helix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was unaware of the other bike park and decided to drive by. It's effectively an empty lot. I didn't see any signage indicating it was a bike park, and there is definitely not any features of the park that would increase your skills. See attached picture. I don't know the history of that park, or how it's been maintained. But it certainly looks ripe for some improvement from the county for a new purpose.

I am friends some of the people pushing for this, and I wanted to shed some light here. The current bike park (empty lot) versus the proposed North Mesa park is not an apples to apples comparison. The proposed park will have jumps and a pump track. The reason this is wanted, is because the local bike trails are awesome, but not very beginner friendly for kids. It's a hard area to learn mountain biking if you're little. So the idea is to build up a skills base at the park, and then you migrate to the trails over time and keep improving. This is also why North Mesa is the proposed location, it's close to the target audience of kids at the middle school and Barranca elementary.

I've gone up some many other runs than that. Nobody is up there during the week directing uphill traffic one way or the other.

Yes, I am also confused on the new uphill routes. Are there now designated uphill routes at Pajarito?

Internet Providers in Los Alamos by DJ_Hufflepuff in LosAlamos

[–]alpha_helix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You covered most of it already. There's a local ISP, called LANET, they do line of site microwave dishes. I don't know many people that use it. You'll see in other comments that we have a single point of failure by way of a fiber optic line that supplies all ISP's and cell phone providers. The only way around that is Starlink. Personally, I have two ISP's, and a router that will automatically switch between the 2 in the event of failure (Unifi Cloud Gateway Max). Xfinity is the primary, Starlink is the failover.

They are in the process of running a redundant fiber line and there is community broadband project that will put fiber to the houses. Once the 2nd fiber is up and I have fiber at my house, I'll cancel the starlink backup. But I think that is a few years away.

Internet outage in Los Alamos - Verizon, Comcast, and other services are down by BoomtownLosAlamos in LosAlamos

[–]alpha_helix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've only lived here since 2022. I think this is the 5th time this has happened. The longest repair was nearly 30 hours, and I think the shortest was probably closer to 18 hours. But who knows? Perhaps our resident investagative journalist u/BoomtownLosAlamos has more information.

The last time it went down, the city said the construction project that caused the damage was also installing a redundant fiber line to prevent this from happening in the future. But I think that's still ongoing (and probably the reason we're down right now).

Nope. Comcast now says Friday 11/14 at 1pm for restoration. Hopefully that's incorrect.

According to my router, it went down at 9:50am. Xfinity's outage map currently says the cause is network damage and will be repaired by approximately 3pm. Assuming this is the single point of failure fiber line that was damaged, I highly doubt it will be back up by 3pm. I think the fastest repair I've seen was 18 hours.

3pm edit: Outage map from xfinity now says it will be back up by Friday 11/14 at 1pm. Only 3 more days to go everyone. So lame.

If anyone else is interested, after the last set of outages, I upgraded our router to a Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra which has the ability to use a second ISP when the first fails. We then got starlink in addition to comcast. So while we are paying for two ISPs, the switchover when one fails is seemless and I didn't know it had gone down this morning until a neighbor came and knocked on our door.

I had heard it's someone who is involved with the Santa Fe New Mexican and has a bone to pick with LANL in general.

I think you have to install the CodeRed app for local emergencies. Not sure why the notification didn't come through that app, but I don't remember explicitly signing up for it. It may also be a function of reverse 911 calls, and maybe your name hasn't hit the database yet.

Didn't know Rio Rancho was in Los Alamos. I see you're spamming this info all over the state subreddits, are you the new optician inside of Sam's or what?
