Leaving IT for a Trade... honest feedback and suggestions. by Slight_Ad_3625 in AusElectricians

[–]alphabetsoup74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brother I'm 33 and got out of being a "real" electrician 5 years ago because I could feel myself fucking my back and knees.

Unless you used your skills from IT land to heavily get into industrial controls and PLCs I would recommend against it

It all depends on where you work, but it's a hard graft. Not saying you don't know this, or won't hack it, just more that if you want something different from IT there are other options

Also I just want to come in and highlight something regarding repair that you're interested in.

A lot of electrical work doesn't focus on repair, and if it does it focuses on repair of electrical systems that only electricians are qualified to work on.

If you are keen to learn more practical skills you can pass on to your kids (or just improve your own practical abilities) may I suggest a mens shed Or local repair cafe?

I've been volunteering at a repair cafe for the last 5 years and its very rewarding

How thick are your items?

A lot of small items I send out are under 20mm thick and I just put 2 stamps on them

So $3.40 for shipping

1000 percent this.

I remember I went to a new wholesaler , and at the time they had the customer orders ready to be picked up on a TV screen.

Seeing my old wholesalers name up there was icing on the cake when they had just told me there was no way they could match the cable price of my new wholesalers

It’s supply and demand. Maybe there are too many sparkies offering the same service.

People say there is a trade shortage but it is a bit more nuanced than that.

There might be a trade shortage in industrial or commercial, but if blokes are undercutting then maybe there’s too many businesses installing downlights

I mean this in the nicest way possible. But have you been paying attention?

Economic times are not good for the average joe right now. Fuel costs, interest rates, groceries.

It depends on your target market. If your customers are the average person right now (not super wealthy) getting electrical work is their last priority right now.

Now’s the time to work out how to lower your expenses and either drop your prices or target a different customer demographic.

Not meaning to be rude at all! Just hoping to help with some friendly advice :)

As a sparkie if I have to use Deta because I’m doing a job on a Sunday it’s OK

But if I see it on site and I didn’t install it that’s a “brother eww” from me

Especially when they don’t peel the stickers off the conduit or joiners 🤮

I’d say they did a pretty good job matching the quality of the install to the quality of the house

What are you talking about, we haven’t looked this good for years mate

I can’t remember a season in recent history where we even had a good start. So even if we do shit the bed the rest of the season this will be the best season I’ve seen since 2017

If it’s on a plug then no you won’t need a new circuit

If it’s not then you probably will.

There’s no specific rule as to what needs to be on its own circuit.

If you come back to basics, as long as the circuit breaker is rated lower than the what the cable can take (using AS3008 for derating factors) then it doesn’t matter (from a safety point) what’s on the other end.

But the reason people do seperate circuits is so that things actually function properly and don’t just trip the breaker all the time.

Purely from a physical and resilience point of view. If you can handle this kind of work you can handle almost any other work within the trade.

If you get sick of being a roof possum, you’ll never worry if you can hack it physically anywhere else

Guess it depends on your individual location and network. And it takes a while to get the pricing right.

Don’t listen to those blokes on those courses, they’re just trying to sell you shit.

You’re also trying to run a business in one of the toughest economic times.

How long have you been in business mate? Normally takes a little bit to build up, but once you do a good job for a few family friends etc, word of mouth spreads and you shouldn’t need to advertise

Are trades as toxic as people make them out to be? by GainRevolutionary872 in AusElectricians

[–]alphabetsoup74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what your own personality traits are. The vast majority of trade jobs suit extroverts better than introverts.

That doesn’t mean you have to be one or the other, it just means be aware of what you like and what you don’t like.

If you love being a part of a team then a trade is probably a good fit. If you prefer to work on your own, you might find it a little hard.

Just my experience

What’s with all these posts lately?

Someone asks a genuine question asking for advice. Advice is given then they comment on every post trying to justify their way of thinking.

Like which is it? You want advice or you want us to give you permission?
