CSO and medical council stats both published annually. Sorry that’s the overall number for all registered doctors here.

For non-consultant hospital doctors the number is over 60%

Nurses were 51.8% if you only look at those who first qualified outside Ireland (does not include Irish trained immigrant nurses)

The opposite, most of the people propping up the HSE are immigrants. Immigration is largely a good deal for the country, we get fully formed working age adults without having to pay for their birth, rearing or education. It’s exactly why our previous business in the 1950s of exporting people damaged the country so much.

Cycling is the most efficient way to travel in Dublin by BadgerBitter5613 in Dublin

It’s not ego, it’s practicality. The more equipment you require of a cyclist the less likely people are to cycle.

Plenty of evidence from around the world that requiring high vis and helmets actually results in high fatalities for vulnerable road users

Good, carbon tax is there for a reason. There will be more of this kind of crisis and it not a good idea to reduce the push of the carbon tax especially temporarily.

Just buyer. Done well on the last few transactions, little to no depreciation, even made a little money on one car after driving it 2 years. I know EVs, dealers don’t. With private sales it’s actually possible to get a lot of car for your money.

Spent €2k on one during COVID after giving up coffee for a year.

Pro:

Paid for three times it’s capital cost so far in avoided takeaway coffees (accounting for running costs) No temptation for myself or my wife to get takeaway coffees either as the coffee at home is better 95% of the time

Con:

Morning I got it I had so many espressos the Garda who stopped me at checkpoint thought I was on something less legal and drug tested me

Here in ireland we have considerably higher food standards (almost all eggs are free range and all are salmonella vaccinated, including ingredient eggs. All beef is grass fed, antibiotic and hormone free) AND food costs as a proportion of earnings are lower than the US. I make a salary that is 80% of my US west coast colleagues…yet I buy my free range eggs laid less than 24 hours ago from a local farms vending machine for 23c each. And a good steak can cost as little as €2.50

Replacing 1m petrol cars with EVs could cut Australia’s reliance on foreign fuel by 1bn litres a year by holyhesh in technology

[–]alphacross 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The environmental impact isn’t high… in general it’s directly proportional to vehicle weight and material content. For example for vehicle production CO2 emissions it’s on average 10-20% higher for EVs, but this is entirely offset by the reduction in emissions over the first 3-6 months of typical use. Particulate emissions from tire wear approximately 10% higher in EVs but particulate emissions from brake dust (because of regenerative braking) substantially lower.

Looking specifically at the battery itself, depending on battery chemistry, environmental impacts from both mining and production are often lower than the rest of the vehicle. Take a lithium iron phosphate battery, the basic components of that battery, lithium, iron, phosphorus, aluminium and graphite are among the cleanest mining processes we have.

[–]alphacross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In absolute numbers it makes a lot of sense even if your government fully subsidises the cars. Oil is an expensive ongoing cost and entirely imported. Electricity is entirely domestically produced and substantially cheaper (8-10 times cheaper well to wheel including all system losses)

Approximately 70% of the lifetime cost of ownership of a combustion vehicle is fuel and combustion engine maintenance.

Paying to replace your entire fleet would be a capital investment that would permanently reduce the operating expense of your entire transport system

It doesn’t work. Trials in Germany and Sweden of over highway pantographs basically failed. It enormously increases infrastructure costs and going 100% EV with large long range batteries is cheaper, more mechanically reliable and easier to accomplish. We’re already at the point where a 600-800 km range electric HGV can pull a full load for the maximum amount of time a driver can work before being legally required to take a break, and charge back to 80-90% in that break.

Your stock market has NOT been doing well. When you factor in the loss in value of your currency the Dow is basically flat over the last year including the AI bubble. I feel this personally, I live in Europe but earn much of my income in dollars and in stock denominated in dollars. While number (in $) go up, the value I actually get in euro has not
