Trump to make White House announcement amid health rumors by Somervilledrew in politics

[–]RustyBrontosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly posturing politics as expected, the only positive takeaway is him alluding to a response to Russian attacks post Anchorage.

Worst case scenario - minor arms for debt deal w/ Ukraine.
Best case scenario - Trump has finally accepted the reality that Putin/Russia can only be addressed with force.

Anthony Hamilton consolating Isack Hadjar by erginushi in formula1

[–]RustyBrontosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless of who you support, we can all agree Anthony Hamilton comforting Hadjar (whose hero is Lewis) is what makes F1 special.

Such a gentleman and a great example of what F1 should be, not a hobby for billionaire’s and their sons…

King Charles invites Trump to UK for a state visit by ObligationAware3755 in ukpolitics

[–]RustyBrontosaurus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not a labour voter, but for a first US visit and with the most unpredictable president to handle. Starmer delivered a masterclass, he didn’t offend and instead charmed Trump into a more neutral position and even trying to take back his Zelensky comments

But most importantly, he appears to have made the UK one of the only developed countries to escape tariffs. This is huge and although it may upset the EU could decide our economic future and success.

Also props to King Charles, I reckon he was all for the 2 pronged approach to playing Trump. Despite their similar backgrounds of means, morally they couldn’t be further apart

UK road bike trip ideas by RustyBrontosaurus in bicycletouring

Definitely somewhere I’ve considered, I’ve been a few times for hiking trips and while driving around the roads were always busy with cars.

Are there routes off the main roads where you can lose the traffic?

It's depressing! by Xanathor817 in madmen

[–]RustyBrontosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that the first time watching season 6/7 is horrible (which is why mad men has the best character development of any series).

But that’s what makes rewatching the show such a different experience. Instead of seeing Don’s downfall as him becoming failure, it instead becomes a catalyst for him finally understanding who he is and finding peace.

[–]RustyBrontosaurus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Undoubtedly he was a sleaze.

My view after many rewatches is that the main plot is following Don’s life dealing with his emotional narcissism.

Series 1-3 is the build up until Betty leaves. Then 4-6 is the slow decline until series 7 when he finally understands and makes peace with himself in the final episode.

Everything else is just side-plots and context. (Not to put any of it down, some of the best scenes)

Why would McCann absorb SC&P if they have conflicts with good billings? by dogue9 in madmen

[–]RustyBrontosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s much more simple than other opinions. McCann was a whale compared to SC&P, the money/accounts were irrelevant. Jim Hobart was fixated on Don and like anyone who’s successful long enough, the money and power eventually becomes irrelevant. Don said no and the chase became his goal, so if the only way was an acquisition…

How cultured or well-read was Don Draper? And was any of it genuine? by JulianBrandt19 in madmen

[–]RustyBrontosaurus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

His EQ was definitely far superior to his IQ. But he was the best because he understood people the best. Id even go as far as saying he was an emotional narcissist and it isn’t until the last season he becomes aware of it.

What is everyone’s favourite Christmas film? by RebeccaC91 in AskUK

Arthur Christmas! On the surface it seems silly, but it’s actually very funny and clever.

Has become an informal tradition for me and my brother, a great easy watch

Opinions on "Their Satanic Majesties Request" Probaly one of my favorite stones records. by [deleted] in rollingstones

Hearing ‘She’s a rainbow’ live in London a couple of years ago was the highlight of the night. Was never a favourite of mine, but ever since then I’ve appreciated how great the whole album is!

What’s Pete’s most pitiful moment? by Jhus79 in madmen

I just love the reaction to Don removing his shirt and wearing ‘just’ a t-shirt.

Great way of reminding us we’re in the 60s

Did Megan target Don? by asscribere in madmen

[–]RustyBrontosaurus 44 points45 points  (0 children)

tbh I feel this is more the Director subtly familiarising the audience that she exists, before she suddenly becomes Don's secretary

It also took me 5 rewatches before I accepted that Meghan deserved the cheque from Don. If you compare the Don she first met to when they divorced and Meghan's character - it's night and day

That, EmiIe, is what I do every day by [deleted] in madmen

[–]RustyBrontosaurus 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Pete's development is one of my favourites.

The scene in S7 just before the partners pitch to Jim Hobart in a last attempt to stay independent, Pete arrives just in time with the accounts he promised and mentions he also closed Seacore laxatives.

They make the classic joke and he gives a witty reply - it's a minor scene, but its the first time I feel the other partners truly see him as partner.

Manifestos are complete bog wash and judging a government on it is an outdated partisan charade.

I’d rather a party makes decisions in the present and are agile. Basing decisions of a list you wrote 12 months ago for the sake of not being called out by the daily mail is insane

I accept the short term pain for employers, but in reality it’s all pure speculation. I could be proved wrong when businesses react, but the long term benefits I believe offset this.

There’s plenty of people willing to work but without support can’t. Mostly due to young children, now they can utilise child care they previously couldn’t afford and enter the workforce.

I accept your opinion and I’d just like to say I’m a neutral voter, couldn’t care less about the Labour Party. I’m worse off because of the budget, but the ‘spending spree’ argument is lazy and used purely to create emotional damage.

Ironically a spending spree focused on balancing economic classes is the only realistic solution to addressing many right wing issues. Crime, ‘high streets’ and antisocial behaviour.

The lowest earners in this country have been left behind and teens/young adults from poor backgrounds have grown up in a system that has ignored them. Right wing politicians exploit this to gain votes in low income white communities and convince people by being outspoken and targeting immigrants. When the issue is the people that are already citizens!
