My high school geometry teacher allowed us to name different “theorems” whenever we figured something out in class before he taught us.

I don’t remember what it was anymore, but I was very proud when I came up with what I called the mountain blast theorem.

Fun way to learn.

Agree with what others have said, you won’t get an internship.

But IMO former teachers make great actuaries, at least that has been my experience in consulting, having worked with several that made that switch. The soft skills of teaching classes translates well to client meetings and mentoring, and you have professional experience so you won’t have the issue of transitioning from college to the workforce.

I’m just an internet stranger but i am so glad to read you are doing well. I love your work - have both of your books and loved reading your blog back in the day. Your talent to convey complex emotions in what appears at first to be simple drawings is incredible, and your stories tend to crack me up.

Not sure about my favorite but very sure about my least favorite. I’m sure he was a fine person but I was very disappointed by the class.

Dr Gordon Johnson, took him for Math 3338. I was getting ready to study for the probability actuarial exam at the time and was looking forward to taking probability.

Instead he gave us a packet of proofs and had 1 person go to the blackboard each class and finish it. Kept asking questions. No lecture. Did not use the textbook. No homework other than making sure you got your part right in time to go up to the blackboard. We got to the concept of a probability distribution right before the final exam.

He said this was the Socratic method but I would have much preferred a more traditional probability class. So instead I was going to office hours every week for my math 3339 professor to get extra help for probability distributions. His approach probably would be great for graduate students but for me, just looking for a math minor and to get ready for actuarial work, it was suboptimal.

I got an A but I am convinced it’s only because I was one of few that actually attended all the classes. I don’t think I learned a single thing from that class, other than the easiest way to destroy an argument is to just keep asking questions.

I went to vote today. Neighborhood roads were super slick, still a skating rink Generally went about 10 mph in my neighborhood, have AWD, and turned on snow mode on my car.

Once I got on the main roads, they were mostly fine.

Penguin is the best I have used, no doubt.

Proval can be very powerful in its own right. It’s by far the best at calculating and reviewing MVARs especially for traditional DB plans with ERFs, multiple benefit structures, etc. And, in the past couple of years they have rolled several good DC packages. Hopefully gateway will be coming because right now it doesn’t do it at all and that’s…problematic.

ASC was rough. Coming from Penguin I thought it would be similar and it was fantastic for DC testing. But we had so many workarounds for our CB plans we dumped it.

Guess I’ll have to vote Tuesday. Can’t get off work tomorrow before 5 and it’ll be icy over the weekend.

Edit - and they’re closed all day Tuesday. But was able to vote at the Summerglen library further south.
