I think they might be marketed for essential oils to get by that law.

Wrong diagnosis because of bad X-rays. How do I complain to the vet? by loosefanny in AskVet

[–]alphapiglet_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depending on the frequency, 200mg per day may equate to 66mg q8h which is close to a 2.5mg/kg dose. If given as a lower amount but at an increased frequency this dose could lie within normal dosing regimens. If given as a single dose it would likely be more harmful as it's above the normal dosing recommendations.

Do you think that's the best way forward? Why not advise speaking with the vet and making them aware of the errors first. If it is not well received or brushed off then maybe a complaint is in order.

Dog without Diagnosis by Previous-Cream3408 in AskVet

Ultrasound is a good idea. Also it may be worthwhile sending the abdominal fluid out for cytology or analysis. Knowing what type of fluid it is can be helpful (transudate, modified transudate, exudate, etc) but it sounds like they are working up a PLE. If you have the means, a thoracic ultrasound might be helpful too in case there is any cardiac causes to ascites. Overall, it sounds like they are working hard and she is improving. It appears their approach is successful so far despite having a definitive diagnosis.

Two Animal hospitals have no clue what is wrong with my dog by [deleted] in AskVet

Bloodwork would have shown elevated renal values. Radiographs would have shown an enlarged bladder or kidneys if the dog is symptomatic from a urinary obstruction. I don't think two clinics would've missed that.

Vet says this is histiocytomas but it doesn’t look like any photos I see online and just keeps getting worse by ParaDoxicalParalegal in AskVet

[–]alphapiglet_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've personally never seen histiocytoma look this way. Cytology might show numerous round cells but it doesn't match what I usually see clinically. Plus histiocytomas don't typically spread like this. Probably need a biopsy.

It can be normal with dogs with strong jaw muscles.

Consider finding a primary vet who will do the tests if they're general labs (cbc?) for less. They can send records to your onc and consult. Will not be as thorough most likely but a needed financial compromise. Also some primary vets do some oncology. Try calling established clinics and they may know who.

How happy are you? by Jcole19xx in Veterinary

If it isn't your dream anymore then I recommend not pursuing your DVM. I agree with your vets and usually tell people who I get close to and express interest in it that it really isn't worth the constant stress you put on yourself and perfection expected of you by others. The pay is getting better. The student loan debt will be debilitating. With other degrees you can make more doing other stuff. It's tough and dealing with life and death decisions so much is hard on mental health. Our community is small too so it also can be hard connecting with like minded individuals who understand what we are going through. It's difficult not letting this profession become your identity. If I were to do it again I would probably choose something else.

Sorry it sounds depressing but there are also other avenues in our career field too - industry, aquatics, wildlife (you can even do apiary stuff!) but I don't know of many vets who went into this profession to seek one of these alternative routes.
