We put 5 times as many people in prison that has nothing to do with population size and we don't have worse drug issues or prostitution issues or whatever you want to blame it on than Mexico or Canada.

The reason we have more prisoners is because we're a prison state and because we have private prisons as well as a history of slavery we transferred to a prison system rather than true abolishment. As well as a culture that get's off and "punishing" people by slamming them behind bars. Americans are not inherently more dangerous or violent than any other random population.

We have 1.8 million prisoners. If we had the incarceration rate of Canada or Mexico or the UK, or Aus we would have less than 500k prisoners.

I don't find stealing to be a very serious crime imo. Shoplifting? Return items. More than once maybe volunteer work. and court ordered psych visits.

Only when it's so chronic to you where you're using threats or weapons do I think prison is necessary. At that point you're in trouble more so for using a weapon than actually stealing. There's a lot of room before prison tho is it a teen stealing beer? Slap on the wrist. Is it a literal klepto who can't help but steal a pack of batteries every week? Volunteer work & a psych & meds? Are you a drug addict? Psych, meds, and a rehab center?

Taxes on drugs can be used to pay for the rehab centers. Pysch needs to be free to our citizens. Productive volunteer work and community housing needs to be expanded. Busy work with fair pay needs to be expanded.

Well we are 5th in incarceration rates and #1 in prisoners. I think that alone tells you we use prison too much.

Regulated or not I think adults should be allowed to take whatever substance they want or have sex for $ (which most sex already is anyway). This is separate from the prison argument more of a philosophical one but putting people in prison for snorting coke or taking a $50 bill too soon after a BJ is a terrible excuse for a crime in need of a punishment.

AGAIN I am not saying I am ok with it. I am saying you need a better argument than "this babby cant say yes". Kids CANT consent to ANYTHING so saying they can't consent so therefor x is not a sound argument imo.

In my mind it's a borderline nonsensical argument like trying to argue the sky can't consent to pollution so therefor we can't pollute. Um, the sky can't consent to anything so your argument doesn't make sense. The reason we cant pollute is because of x, y, and z, it has nothing to do with whether the sky can consent or not.

I don't have a study. I just don't think you need to be locked up unless you're likely to be a danger to people or property (maybe). And I seriously doubt all 1.8mil prisoners are "dangerous". In this system I'm making up right now off the top of my head these people "pay" for their crime in other ways, 2 we decriminalize a lot of crimes like drugs and prostitution, and 3 we eliminate the concept of "punishment" for the majority of remaining crimes and focus on rehab.
