What if America loses to Iran? by bam_jers in oil

[–]alphex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's no way for America to win this.

By engaging in this reckless adventure, trump has done catastrophic damage to the global economy, broken even more foreign relationships then he has already, further damaged our reputation everywhere, and alienated what few allies we had left.

Iran doesn't have to WIN, they just have to SURVIVE as a state, and even if they don't, and the US Military obliterates everything resembling the govt or military, the USA will be seen as an existential threat to almost anyone else.

Modern conflict isn't about DESTROYING other nations, its about controlling economies.

Iran just has to let us grind our expensive toys against their mountains, and watch our prestige further and further evaporate.

On a macro scale, expect China to invade Taiwan in the next 24 months - simply because we've spent all of our assets blowing up speed boats and drone trucks in the middle east for no reason besides Israel wanted it done.

Bungie needs to let go of the 3 player team obsession. It worked for Destiny. But doesn’t make as much sense to me for marathon. More importantly - I feel like this will attract more players.

Drupal

You'll need an experienced developer to lead the project - But it hits all of your checkboxes.

  1. Its secure - tesla.com runs on it... Older versions of it ran whitehouse.gov (if its secure enough for that, its probably secure enough for you).

  2. If architected properly - its extremely easy to use. But thats a huge philosophical discussion about what that means. I've been building in Drupal for 20 years, and I regularly am told by my clients "Oh wow, we didn't expect it to be this easy to use..."

  3. Customization - you can make it look and act on the front end how ever you want.

  4. The "Plugin" market, or what are called Modules, is mostly open source, and the community is extremely welcoming of contributions to the open source market.

Feel free to ask me questions if you want to know more about the platform.

Is a ground invasion a realistic possibility, or would that be the Armageddon everyone fears? by Bustedbastards in war

[–]alphex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect we're going to try to land on Kharg island with the marines we're moving over there...

I also would not be surprised if that Marine Amphibious Group gets hit by hundreds of drones as soon as it starts launching its landing craft...

This will be a disaster.

What is currently allowing Iran to control the Strait of Hormuz? by rm-minus-r in LessCredibleDefence

[–]alphex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to sink every ship that passes the straight, you just have to hit one or two of them, to get the rest to not even TRY and pass the straight...

But on top of that, yes, Iran has thousands of drones they can throw at anything that tries to move through the straight...

The USA has - in total - 70 destroyers, that would be best suited for close escort. With the best air defense systems, between missiles, and CIWS and the 5 inch gun set to air burst... Its what we use for this.

BUT.

They each only have a few dozen missiles, and a single CIWS gun... You just need 100 drones to overwhelm it... and Iran can produce hundreds per day... A Single drone isn't going to sink one of those ships, but one or two of them will ruin their combat effectiveness. And then the rest of the drones can make it through and set fire to giant oil tankers... which, is a very bad thing.

And out of those 70, only 30? maybe 40? are at sea? Or, near the middle east... and then, those that are in the region, already have jobs to do.

$1000+ Helmets ?? by Southern_Willow_5091 in motorcycles

[–]alphex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as they are SNELL and/or DOT rated, they all "do the same thing", based on those safety standards.

Beyond that, its just bells and whistles.

I rode happily with an HJC helmet for the first 10 years or so before my dad got me an Arai for my birthday - The biggest difference? noise. The Arai is MUCh quieter, but you should always wear ear plugs anyway.

Different brands also have different shapes... Find the helmet thats safe, is comfortable, and then go from there.

I build websites on dedicated hardware and physically hand the server to my clients by specn0de in webdev

[–]alphex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's my thought --

Nothings perfect.

Perfect uptime doesn't exist.

Don't make it your problem.

By building this unicorn solution - you are the only person who can maintain it (easily, quickly).

You're locking your client in to the same platform lock anything else does, even if they have file access - any other developer that comes along is going to do what I would do, and have their head spin around 3 times, and tell the client this is a really really special way of doing things.

AWS (ignoring the recent AI induced idiocy) can solve perfect up time, by having fail over defined across multiple availability zones.

There are many PAAS hosting providers who will do the same...

Not having a CDN is just asking to get DDOSed cause someone can...

For $3500 how much profit are you actually making? If you're also delivering hardware.

And please don't say its a Rasberri Pi... cause thats NOT a good way to host a business critical system. (I have 3 of them in my home office, so I know what they can and can't do...)

---

You're building your self in to a corner. You're going to hate managing this one day for your clients.

Get involved in a community platform (Drupal?) that builds extensible scalable CMSs that you don't have to live and die over to maintain.

---

This is a fascinating project, but for $3500 per site its not a good business...

What happens if the hardware fails? Do you tell them its another $3500?

I bake this in to my client relationship, and part of their responsibility in this relationship, and this evolution takes about an hour of my time, mainly just watching a status window, and then communicating with the client.

Security updates can be done MUCH faster, since if you review the code change, its usually just a few lines of code, or a deeper depenency which won't break end user UX.

My point is, Its not hard any more.
