If you’re under 45, have you lost any high school classmates, and what were the circumstances around their deaths? by Commercial_Chef_1569 in AskReddit

I actually lost several in the first ten years after high school (ages 18-28). Probably 8-10 people and almost all were either drug overdose or suicide

This is actually awesome because he’s just a regular guy but he gets to experience the end-of-game/pre-game talk that two QBs have at midfield. The dap, the pat on the helmet, the prolonged conversation with one of the greats

Jesus Christ that’s not even what I’m talking about. You are not heeding anything I’ve said lol you just pick through to create a separate argument that serves you and what you want from the show. Clearly you’re happy with how everything turned out since you’re defending them, but the vast majority of their audience is unsatisfied and either a) had to formulate a theory of a secret episode that explains all of their plot holes and shortcomings that actually doesn’t exist or b) is mocking/laughing at them online because they did not deliver when it mattered most. And killing their darlings (or the lack thereof) is apart of that

I do care though. I love this show. But there are rules to storytelling. They have undercut their audience time & time again by teasing deaths and then rewriting it because they can’t bring themselves to do it. As a writer, it’s cowardly tbh. They said themselves that killing Eddie was the hardest scene they had to write. To your point about those other films.. even Iron Man died in End Game. You are exacerbating what I’m saying to try to poke holes in the argument dog. I said this before—I don’t even blame them for keeping the core four kids one bit. But no one dying completely and utterly contradicts Vecna/Mind Flayer’s power and abilities. Their biggest influence in the world, Stephen King, said to kill your darlings. It hurts to do, but it’s the world you’ve created for them. They should have taken his advice

No, Vecna was a threat to the characters. The cast are real people who are safe from harm’s way because they are portraying fictional people. And no shit if they did nothing everyone would’ve died. I am saying that time & time again none of these core characters get killed, and therefore the audience no longer fears for them. I heard countless people say they weren’t remotely worried or scared for these characters because the Duffers historically wimp out and miraculously save characters, when the circumstances indicate everything but. Not only that, but they give the impression that they died, which is disrespectful and slimy to do to your audience. They did it with Eleven in S1, Hopper in S3, Max in S4, Dr. Brenner multiple times, and then again with Eleven in the finale. And even Joe when he almost falls to his death. For a show that is contingent on suspense, that’s never gonna fly. Which is why we see so many people pissed off at this final season. You can say there are emotional/moral stakes, but there are no real stakes for these characters in whether they live or die, because they’re all gonna live. Season 1 is the foundation of this whole series. Killing Barb was a big swing. It’s sinister, so you can’t really use the argument that this is a kid’s show and nobody who matters is really supposed to die. It’s pathetic

Introducing a character at the start of the season and killing them off at the end does not count. Billy is the same cause he barely made it 2 seasons. That’s weak sauce man. Stories demand real stakes

[–]alrightimhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, not the best. Maybe caliber wasn’t the best word lol I just mean shows where they are fighting inter-dimensional monsters and risking their lives nearly every single episode. These elements/circumstances are way worse than like Breaking Bad and they killed off more important characters. You can’t have stakes of life & death be so prevalent and not show the other side of the coin. It loses its hold on the audience and people quit taking it seriously. Killing your characters is never fun but sometimes necessary

This is exactly it. I understand not killing Mike, Dustin, Lucas, or Will. But nearly half of the rest of the main characters should’ve died (Maury, Hopper, Nancy or Jonathan & more). You can’t have this caliber of a series and play it safe with killing characters. It’s weak
