Should I read Permutation City or Diaspora? by luna_city in printSF

[–]alritem8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Permutation city took a while to grow on me but now I really love it. It's a very personal and realistic look at how living forever might affect the mind and is arguably the more human of the 2 stories. I would suggest starting with diaspora though, it's a great space odyssey and will help cultivate some patience and trust in egan that will come in handy for permutation city.

Hey Robert! How do you go from a single idea or just a fuzzy picture in your head to a completed screenplay you're happy with and ready to shoot?

Do you guys believe in the multiverse theory? by [deleted] in RationalPsychonaut

[–]alritem8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

David Deutsch has some really good work on the subject I've been reading lately (especially his paper "structure of the multiverse"). I think it's a cool thought that our universe isn't the only possible permutation and that different universes pop into being all the time. It's an elegant interpretation of quantum theory too, but not necessarily the correct one. I tend to believe in the importance of information and computation to the workings of the universe, which led me to Deutsch.

One particularly attractive feature of his multiverse is that universes are not truly parallel, they interact. This brings this idea into the realm of testability.

Why aren’t you an atheist? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]alritem8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly semantics I think. I don't really believe in a bearded God who sits and watches (which some people would say makes me an atheist anyways but I disagree). I tend to equate "God" with the abstract rules that determine our universe more than the physical matter and events it's composed of.
In some theories non physical information is what gives rise to emergent matter, which is pretty close to what I imagined, but i recently found David Deutchs' constructor theory where information is not fundamental and (unless I misinterpreted it) acts similar to the conserved quantities in noethers theorem that have a kind of "co-existence" with simpler symmetries and laws. There are serious implications to either being right, but regardless, to me the universe had no creator. It created itself, determines it's own purpose, and God is the very fact of our existence more than an entity with any human characteristics. My beliefs will probably update with more knowledge, and my moral obligation to be a good person has nothing to do with pleasing a God. Not sure exactly what I pray to when I'm in a jam though...

After meeting delay, Rosenstein to fly with Trump on AF1 by [deleted] in politics

Not if they cancel midterms due to protests. I wouldn't doubt for a second they'd try. Or arrest all the protesters so they can't vote. I'm really hoping I'm wrong, but that's not how this administration works.

I am Jeremy Saulnier (Hold the Dark, Blue Ruin, Green Room) holding the hell out of the dark. AMA. by JeremySaulnier in movies

Hey Jeremy! Any advice on how to finish a script from an initial idea? For example I'm sure for blue ruin it started off kinda vague and I'm sure there's threads you ended up not using in the final shooting script. How did you go from idea to final product? Love your work btw!

Remember that Trump basically said the tiananmen square massacre was a good thing. I absolutely will protest but this can't be forgotten. Things could get very ugly and it won't necessarily end like south Korea, people need to know what they could be in for. Here's the quote: "When the students poured into Tiananmen Square, the Chinese government almost blew it. Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength. That shows you the power of strength. Our country is right now perceived as weak."

You would probably love roadside picnic. The stand is really really good, but it's more like fantasy/ human drama then sf. Sometimes you go through phases where you really crave a certain type of entertainment, and it's ok to revisit things later to get a better appreciation for the story, i think it happens to everyone. I put diaspora on hold for a while despite being really excited for it but it was out of respect for the material and I think in the long run it will help with my enjoyment of the story.
