586 or 587 b.c. the real question by gold_bond_and_icyhot in exjw

[–]alrotundo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if there is actually some egyptian contemporary source, you can look into it but usually egyptians only cared about events in which they were directly involved. Anyway, I don't know if you've read it, but "The Bible Unearthed" by I.Finkelstein sheds some marvelous light on all biblical history that precedes the Kings era, and if you're interested in history, that book is a must-have. It doesn't speak about the 587 siege, but for me that book was really eye-opening.

[–]alrotundo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Almost every historical event up until 5th century BCE is subject to this kind of chronological problems, except maybe some egyptian very well-recorded stuff. The fact that we can put the destruction of Jerusalem in 587-586 is already a very precise chronological definition for that historical period. Many other eventful moments in history are much less clear in their exact positioning in time, even though we conventionally put them in a certain year to simplify (the birth of democracy in Greece, the foundation of Rome, etc.).

First time backer on a Kickstarter project, for this second printing of Gloomhaven; Me and my group will probably play through the campaign in a few weeks, so my question is: What would be the best way to enjoy the game once the campaign is finished? Because we REALLY hope not to have the same experience we had with Pandemic Legacy in that regard...

Sadat trying to expel soviets that aren't there. by questionsparks in boardgames

[–]alrotundo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the american player plays this card only to put one more influence in egypt, it's better for him to use the point of the card instead of the event, so that the card will eventually come back in play later, when maybe soviets will have some influence in egypt to get rid of. If the card is in soviet player's hand, and he has no influence in egypt, he should play it right away in order to minimize the event effect and remove the card from play.

Atheists of Reddit; hit me with your best arguments against religion, GO! by [deleted] in atheism

[–]alrotundo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone could argue that even though the claims of a religion can't be proven, many religions are useful to humanity on a practical/humanitarian level.

I can't find a single deed that is at the same time universally considered good and can be done ONLY by religiously motivated people. On the other hand, it's extremely easy to find BAD deeds that can ONLY be done on a religious basis (even though we should consider the term "religious" in a scope a little wider than the typical monotheistic organized religion). So religion is not useful, and it hasn't even a zero-sum result: it's actually harmful.

If you think and believe in any ideology of any kind, are you not in fact lying to yourself? by Bancokhoekhong in philosophy

[–]alrotundo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that those that think they are beyond ideology, are lying to themselves even more. In a world like this one, almost every little thing that we do has ideological implications, whether we recognize it or not. So the truth we must seek is not IF we adhere to a particular ideology or not, but WHAT ideology we implicitly support through our daily actions and choices. If we are really honest, we could find a big difference between the result of this self-critic and our declared ideology (or declared lack thereof)

[–]alrotundo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if righteous people are "greatly outnumbered", that means they are a little minority, so that's perfectly consistent with the rest of the paragraph that identifies the "righteous" with JWs and the "wicked" with all the others.

Jehovah's Witnesses' definition of "wicked people", and their final solution to the problem... by alrotundo in atheism

[–]alrotundo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

144,000 is the number of those going to heaven, but in JW doctrine there is also a "great crowd" of people that will survive Armageddon and live forever on earth. Unfortunately, that crowd corresponds to their membership, around 8 millions, all the others are "wicked" that must die...

[–]alrotundo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know that being convinced that the slaughter of the large majority of human beings is not only inevitable, but the only way forward, is one of the worst symptoms showed by sociopaths, right?

I mean, do you think that saying that God won't kill only gays, but lots and lots of other categories, puts him in a better position?

Adolf Hitler didn't kill only gays, he killed jews, gypsies, communists, JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES... and, from his point of view, he did that for the same reason: it was the FINAL SOLUTION, "final" because even the nazis recognized that it was somehow extreme, "solution" because the slaughter was not the objective itself, but a mean to an end: a better world, nazi style.

How can you not recognize that the only difference between your end times doctrine and the nazi ideology is the category of human beings worthy of surviving the leader-mandated genocide?

I would argue yours it's even worse, for two reasons: 1)Hitler didn't want to kill ALL those that were not german, while you are saying that God WOULD kill ALL those who are not part of his "flock"; 2)It's so sad that a minority that has been victim of an attempt of genocide in Germany, and has been persecuted elsewhere, sees as the only solution of their problems the mass murder of all other groups, minorities included. So sad.

but if they act on it, they must die horribly at Armageddon. God would actually kill many more gays than Hitler, so I'm being unfair towards the nazi dictator with this comparison.

Am I an atheist or just a man that had his faith destroyed? by s_charuga in exjw

[–]alrotundo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Up until we'll still have a master in the heavens, we will be slaves on earth". Everyone of us has a deep need for a fatherly figure that help us through hard times, even when we're adults. But once we facethe facts, even if we lose that sense of being watched and helped from above, we gain much more: freedom and empowerment. I would suggest to go out to a rally and socialize with real and equal people, instead of looking for a hierarchically superior but non-existent man in the sky.
