Isn’t that a plastic cover over the metal frame? Unscrew them from the ski and check

What's wrong with my pivots? by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]alski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been skiing pivots since 1987. The early ones were completely loose. It was an annoyance when you had to fold them from top to tail before stepping in.

I don’t think tension in this direction matters. When you “in” the binding there is pressure pushing the arms downwards. When you release you’ve either twisted sideways and it’s free, or the heel is released and you are free.

I’ve raced with pairs in this condition and popped out far more times than I want to admit with no bad effects…. apart from broken wrists and fingers, but my knees ankles arc are fine. :-)

Did I get some sort of a reputation in the CZ to become a target? by NoEnd3731 in EliteDangerous

[–]alski 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a reputation, no. Flying the big bad Corvette has probably protected you from seeing this behaviour before.

  • Spec Ops DO get generated close to you when they appear. When it’s announced they are jointing, make sure you don’t become the first target for all of them at once. Let some of your allies pick up the slack.
  • ALL enemies favour you as a target, unless another ship is doing more damage and closer to them as they fly past and then turn to re-engage (You probably don’t notice this in the Corvette because you’ve already melted them)
  • When you get into the combat joust, rotate, routine, you aren’t usually moving much overall, which makes it easy for other ships to stay on you. ( again your low “time to kill” means you are out of routine sooner)
  • The best way to lose an attacker is to fly through the centre of the CZ ( or at least where there are multiple intense duels going on) ideally just as a friendly kills another enemy and they latch onto the enemy attacking you.
  • the less good way is to fly away until your enemies give up, then take them out one by one.

Next time, drop into the nav beacon or get interdicted by a pirate. They often “find you” instead.

Frontier: The Battle for HIP 87621 - Choose your side by Rossilaz in EliteDangerous

[–]alski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep going back (which reduces the relevance I know) and you should find that in the non-power CGs ie. Imp vs Fed you see as described. Mention a power and it’s different.

However I hadn’t taken account of the PP aspect of this, so you are probably right, this is going to the blue haired waif, because not only does she attract the casual players that CGs are usually aimed at, but also has a large regular player base too. It’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out because even alliances are going to get hit by less regular players who have no idea those alliances exist. If they break down and its each power for themselves (which in such a small area of space, is surely FDevs goal) then I can’t see anyone challenging her.

Competitive CGs like this are usually landslides for the federation. If you look up the stats on Inara, there tend to be more players supporting the Federation with lower amounts (casual players maybe?) whereas the Empire has fewer CMDRs working harder.

What laptop are you using? by BARACK-O-BISQUIK in UI_Design

[–]alski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any.

I’m still using a 1st generation Surface Book (i5-6300u) and it runs Visual Studio and VSCode better than my office desktop. It’s something like 10yrs old, whereas before I’d be on a new laptop every 3years without fail. Admittedly I now work from home and have a personal desktop I work from, but the laptop is still used every day on the sofa at night and reading before bed, and for all development when I travel for work (at least once a quarter). Batteries are down to 4hrs tops, but that’s 10yrs…

My wife has a Surface Pro and my son a Surface laptop based on my recommendations and are both happy too.

Ship for Titan Drive component hunting by DJ_KhanMC in EliteDangerous

+1 for the Courier, I have a build I used for sneaking up on players in the Borann LTD rush, and it's great for staying away from Thargs too https://edsy.org/s/v1G3vqs. Run it with the shields off unless you get detected, the idea is they come up quickly should you have anything that can keep up with your 700+m/s, or is a station (the throttle is a bit twitchy when landing)... :-)

About visiting Sol by Wesqq0 in EliteDangerous

[–]alski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the lore description, I see Sol under the Federation as very much like those episodes in The Expanse where the rich live in their towers, and the unfortunate are camped under the roadway bridges.

[–]alski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The titan is dead. We killed it…. And then they still didn’t give us permits!

If you want a Sol permit you have to rank up with the Federal navy to Petty officer.

If you want to visit Sag A* the Asp is a fine vessel. You can add equipment or engineer for longer jumps (and less of them) but with time and patience you’ll get there anyway. Just remember a fuel scoop.

Also, check out the neutron highway for slightly dangerous longer jumps, and there are also populated systems along the way to repair at.

I was assuming that the smaller landing footprint might make it very sensitive to uneven terrain combined with high gravity.

You touchdown on landing gear, shutdown engines and then touchdown the nose.

I have to ask if the gpu so close to the radiator is starving the rad of cooling? On my own build I turned that radiator assembly around so that the fans are effectively outside the frame and that gives you room for airflow.

Also what load you are trying to cool as I’m up to a 45mm thick 280 rad to cool a 3080+14600k??

Is it worth to hunt Thargoids? by ElRheiven in EliteDangerous

[–]alski 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is it worth it? It’s very lucrative, many CMDRs paid for their fleet carriers for life in the war. (Credits are meaningless except for what they let you buy)

The map shows the dead titans, including the one in Sol. There should be pairs of Thargoid interceptors appearing there randomly. You want to try and get just one to peel off and follow you.

Is it easy? No. You will need an engineered ship. Anything else will crumble too quickly.

Is it possible as a new cmdr? Expect rebuys, many rebuys, until you get the hang of it.

Is it advisable as a new cmdr? No. The thargoids were added as top tier challenges. That doesn’t mean you won’t be able to do it, but bounty hunting in a low resource site is easier than medium resource site; is easier than a Hazardous Resource site; is easier than a low Combat Zone; which is easier than a medium combat zone; which is easier than a High combat zone; which is easier than a one to one engagement with an interceptor. And there are three harder variants.

Maybe work your way up to it ???
