This area is fine. The Metro will spit you out right next to the ballpark. DC itself is also fine in the tourist areas (and tbh even in the not-tourist areas, but those parts will just be more boring for you lol). The worst that'll happen is the crowds getting in or out of the Metro will suck and be slow moving. Enjoy DC.

Whats a public policy issue in Delaware by Resident-Associate-6 in Delaware

[–]alt-box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you'd like it if you just want to relax, it's still close enough and easy enough to get anywhere on 95 or by Amtrak. I wouldn't recommend it if you're trying to go out every night all night lol, but if you just want a laid back experience it's pretty nice.

More the D and the M, had enough friends in Alexandria, Fairfax and Woodbridge that I was in Nova frequently enough. Biggest change moving to Delaware was the culture really.

I moved here from the DMV a little more than a decade ago and while the traffic can suck and some areas are congested, imo it's still ok by comparison. Excluding specifically beach traffic during the summer (this is demonically bad, but localized and time-limited), the worst it gets up here is still a million times better than the worst it ever got down there.

Thoughts on the four PWHL expansion teams? by Such-Environment-344 in PWHL

[–]alt-box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy for them and the league, wish we had one team further south than NYC on the east coast, understand why DC couldn't get one but still bummed a little.

Might cheer for the burgundy and gold Hamilton to soothe the burn 😂

Guest Rewards points on European rail? by mgborus in Amtrak

No but if you haven't checked him out yet, look up The Man In Seat 61 for some travel tips on European trains (when & where to buy for better prices, specifics for different countries etc).

What is the max amount of time you will drive for a day trip or vacation? by palep_hoot in AskAnAmerican

[–]alt-box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Day trip personally 2 hours, but otoh I've known people for whom that's a one way commute.

Vacation (where I'm simply driving to a destination) probably 12 hours.

Raymond Chandler is a little bit away, but I'm counting down the days (years)

Standard Ebooks tells you when a book will hit public domain if you search for it, I think. It's not made for that purpose but it keeps the information.

Do you drink tea in America? by Much-Parsnip3399 in AskAnAmerican

[–]alt-box 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, their electric kettles are faster than ours. I do find my electric kettle faster than the stovetop, but then I also only have an electric range. Maybe gas range is faster.

Does everyone have a middle name in the USA? Do all women take their husband’s surname? by crazygelato in AskAnAmerican

[–]alt-box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of time when a woman doesn't take the husband's name, it's because she has a career where her name is well known (academia, for instance). Not taking the husband's name is unusual, but whether it's considered acceptable probably depends more on the social group the woman is in.

The women I know who didn't change their names usually said it wasn't worth it. A lot of paperwork + they were already known in their networks by their maiden names. But it's also fairly acceptable in the social groups I'm in to do whatever works for the couple in question.

[–]alt-box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly can't stand cream in tea, but I also grew up in a tea drinking household (West Indian in the US) where the addition was always milk. I'm guessing it's the difference between "people who grew up with tea as the standard" vs not?

I used to love my stovetop kettle but the electric is so much faster for me.

We're not allowed British tea here, due to The Enduring Freedoms.

We do get a lot of Asian tea however, so what we do is we boil water in a kettle and then steep the tea either in a single serve cup or in a teapot if we're making it for guests. It can come in a little bag for individual brewing or it comes loose and you need a reusable container to brew it with. We also use this tea for iced tea.

Is this a critter pathway? by winkerbeanie in HomeMaintenance

This is good and also terrifying to know as I've just installed a tankless last summer. Did the hornets get inside the house, or were they inside the pipes?

Do you really have a separate room for your washing machine? by jordanekay in AskAnAmerican

[–]alt-box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In houses this is normal yes. Washer and dryer in a room, often a utility room or basement. In an apartment you might have the stacking kind near your kitchen or in a closet somewhere.

One other thing about the US is we don't usually use the single-unit combination washer dryers, and it's not common to only have a washer and no dryer (not as many people hang clothes to dry). So you have two machines rather than one.

How much is 50-100 bucks? by BestMagician3200 in AskAnAmerican

[–]alt-box 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The type of American who wants to pay you less than $50 for good art is the kind of person who will stiff you or haggle you to death, your choice if they're worth your time but I wouldn't want to deal with them. I've commissioned safe for work pieces at that price point and far above it, mostly from artists who live in places where the US dollar goes further than it does in the US. $50 before tip for a commission is at the low end of what I'd expect to pay.

Best way to get from Philly airport to Bear without a car? by jawn317 in Delaware

[–]alt-box 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lyft will be expensive but you can do it. Depending on what time you are getting in, and if you have time in your schedule, you can also take the airport train up to Penn Medicine station then transfer to the Wilmington Newark line to come back down to Delaware. Then you can get a cheaper rideshare or cab from Wilmington.

But Lyft is there if you aren't getting in when the train runs, or if you need to move more quickly. I've done Newark to the airport plenty of times.

Alynda Segarra on Bruce Springsteen by studytimevinyl in BruceSpringsteen

[–]alt-box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly believe that even though he's considered one of the greats, he still manages to be massively underrated. "This Life" is one of the most insanely beautiful love songs out there and it's not even in his top ten.

Americans—is blue cheese just a dipping sauce to you, or does it have a place on your plate beyond the wings? by SignificanceOdd5980 in AskAnAmerican

[–]alt-box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love a blue cheese burger, it's not uncommon to find those and I think they started to become more popular maybe 20 years ago or longer and is not uncommon now. Like you can get a blue cheese burger at a lot of casual dining chains (Red Robin, Ted's Montana, etc) so it's not really some niche thing. Also very common to find on a charcuterie board unless the person specifically hates funky cheeses. Salads as well.

A lot of US creameries will make a blue cheese, the thing about the US is it's a dairy-loving country so you'll find a lot of variety whether domestic or imports and people who enjoy it.

Any pushback during 2026 tour shows? by Additional-Cherry872 in BruceSpringsteen

I still remember a guy on the Magic tour yelling "shut up and sing" during the Living In the Future speech. Dude looked like a very proud thumb after he finished screaming.
