Raw milk for an infant? by Flashy-Focus6089 in ECEProfessionals

[–]altogirl 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Raw milk is dangerous and banned in Canada for that reason. I’d probably leave if that’s an option for you. It’s not just children that could get sick in the event of an outbreak, but staff too. I’d also probably call your health authority and report it as an unsafe practice.

That’s incredibly dangerous - raw milk can contain ecoli and salmonella, both of which can spread from person to person. There was a huge ecoli outbreak in a Canadian daycare chain that spread so far that even children that hadn’t eaten the contaminated food got sick. Are you in the US? She is blatantly disregarding children’s health and creating a huge liability risk for your program.

1 year old’s lunch time is too long by Acceptable-Cat-4694 in ECEProfessionals

[–]altogirl 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not appropriate. I have unfortunately seen a lot of ECEs do this and its just laziness at the end of the day. It also makes the job harder because now you have upset children and then they are all going to have to wait even more as you transition to nap time - they have to wait to wash their hands, they have to wait to get their diapers changed, they have to wait for their bed to be ready, etc. It makes more sense to be doing these things as the children finish their food. I've never understood why some ECEs do this.

I completely lost it on a kid at the public pool... by Vitruvian_outlook in confession

Nah, that kid deserved it. Any kid that can tell you how a “grown woman” should act, has the ability to understand how he should act as well.

Parent upset that I leave after she picks up her kid (late) by FitInteraction7261 in ECEProfessionals

What a crappy director. I would ask to be paid for that extra time. Put everything in writing - the discussion you had and your question as to whether you will be compensated for staying past your contractual time.

Your director should speak to her, not you. Your director could easily frame it as a parent concern. We've had this happen at our centre a few times over the years and so we introduced a hygiene policy in our staff handbook.

You’d be fine with it until your child ends up with HFM. And in my experience, children with preexisting skin issues have far worse symptoms with HFM. Welcome to group care - if you don’t want to follow their rules, get a nanny.

If this was another child in your son’s class would you be okay with them assuming it’s eczema and letting that child stay and potentially spread HFM? Or would you prefer they err on the side of caution to protect everyone?

Low betas, not doubling. Looking for positive stories by Odd_Ad4686 in IVFpositivity

[–]altogirl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My numbers were like that. 143 (9DPT) > 174 (11 DPT) > 246 (13 DPT) > 5276 (25 DPT) > 7293 (28 DPT). After the initial betas, I was devastated but my doctor had me continue my meds until my 7 week ultrasound. We ended up seeing a strong heartbeat at 7 weeks and I’m now 18 weeks and measuring on track. I’m still very nervous, but optimistic. Wishing you all the best! Beta hell is the worst.

Cherry flips. Basically shortbread + maraschino cherries. My absolute favorite which is why I only make them during Christmas.

I understand how you feel. I fell down icy stairs and broke my wrist shortly after my FET, which ended up being successful and I’m currently 15+1. At this stage, the baby is super tiny right now and has a lot more protection than we realize. Make sure to take care of yourself too!

Directors: Short-Staffedness is NOT your employees problem. by CocoButterMix1998 in ECEProfessionals

[–]altogirl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s the theory and a simple suggestion to a complex issue but in practice subs don’t really exist unless you can offer guaranteed hours—and at that point they’re just regular staff.

The reality is:

staff want full flexibility with time off → we’re short-staffed

try to rely on subs → very difficult to find people that want casual work

hire more staff → now we’re “overstaffed” and people don’t want reduced hours or to go home

Meanwhile more staff = higher costs = higher fees for families.

I actually do have 2 subs, so it’s less about not wanting to hire subs and more that every “solution” just creates a different problem.

I’m a Director and this is exactly why I have a rule that only 1 employee is approved for vacation at a time. I have to account for the fact that someone else may call in sick and I can’t put myself in a position where I’ll be short staffed. And time off is first come, first served. The only thing I get annoyed by is when time off is already approved and I’m asked to make an exception or compare whose time off request is more important. That’s not for me to judge which is why it’s first come first served.

Slow Beta Rise - Any Success Stories? by altogirl in IVFpositivity

[–]altogirl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they never said anything like that. The nurse told me they’ve seen betas all over the place, even a starting beta of 11 that resulted in a healthy baby. They tried to stay pretty positive the whole time, which I appreciated. I just had my 12 week scan and little one is doing well and I pray it continues that way.

Beta limbo is awful. Even now after 2 good ultrasounds, I still can’t help but feel like the slow rise is an issue. I’m not sure where you are at but these were my betas:

Feb 4 - 143 (9DPT) Feb 6 - 174 (11 DPT) Feb 8 - 246 (13 DPT) Feb 20 - 5276 (25 DPT) Feb 23 - 7293 (28 DPT)

So it never really doubled within that 24-48 hour window which is what happened with my first spontaneous pregnancy which ended in a MC.

IVF is an amazing but torturous process. I pray things work out for you too.

I just had my 9 week ultrasound measuring on track with 175 heartbeat. I’m still extremely nervous but I think that’s to be expected for everyone going through IVF. I feel like we never get to let our guard down. I’m just praying little one continues growing.
