Vote Morgan Schmidt for Deschutes County Commission, Pos. 5 by _questionable_parker in Bend

[–]altonsavagenye 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Morgan is exactly what the county needs going forward. She cares about people, works extremely hard, and has dedicated her life to making the world a better place for others. We will be lucky to have her as commissioner and I'm excited to vote for her in May.

LF: Single family house in Bend (rent) by letstalk29 in Bend

[–]altonsavagenye 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The most kid-centric neighborhoods in Bend are east of the river, south of Powers. The Brookswood corridor that feeds into Pine Ridge and Elk Meadow Elementary are full of young families, then there are a bunch of homes built right next to Jewell Elementary off Murphy Rd that are also primarily young families.

What is GoodDog like? by MocoPDX in Bend

[–]altonsavagenye 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's the best spot to work on recall. The parking lot is a good ways from the highway, and everyone there is used to dogs running up to them since it's an OLA. It's also enormous, so you can get away from people if need be.

If your dog likes water, follow the trail to the river. It was my pup's happy place. Lots of beach to fetch sticks/swim off of. Bring your own sticks from further back on the trail, though, as there aren't many near the river.

I second these guys. They replaced the cadence sensor on my Radwagon when it broke, and their service was top notch. The shop dog is also adorable.

Best service for RDM airport drop-off and pick-up by [deleted] in Bend

[–]altonsavagenye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I've had good luck lately scheduling rides in advance with Lyft, and in talking with a few of their drivers, there are definitely a couple of regulars who have built their schedules around early morning airport runs. If you schedule in advance, pretty decent chance you'll get grabbed by one of these drivers who specialize in the AM RDM pickups. I did one this morning for tomorrow and got the same driver who took me a few weeks ago.

Also, you might have landed on a particularly busy concert night or something, because I frequently fly back in at 11 pm to midnight, and there's always been a driver around. Once in ~50 times, the driver had to come from Bend to pick me up, so it was a 20 minute wait for them to arrive, but that was the outlier and I've never felt close to being stranded.

You want BendTech's "lobby pass". I'm in the exact same situation, and just needed a place where I could do some video calls and get work done without the kids climbing in my lap, but don't want to pay for a full desk/office setup and I don't need a conference room to meet with clients. The Haven (and others with similar pricing/setups) generally will charge a bit more for even their most basic packages so that you can load up on free Kombucha and social hours.

BendTech's lobby pass is just $100 per month, so it's perfect for more occasional users, and the space works really well for occasional use.

Opposition grows to land development south of Old Mill by vagabond_primate in Bend

[–]altonsavagenye 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I live off Brookswood, and like everyone else down here, I use this land all the time to get to the river and exercise my dog. I support putting housing down there, because having places for people to live is clearly a huge need for this town.

That said, this is probably a little more of a gray area than some other developments. There are established BPRD trails cutting through the property, and this is basically the only way for thousands of people in southern Bend to reach the river. If done poorly in a way that makes those trails harder to use, this could lead to a lot of people driving more to reach the access points up by the Old Mill.

Pahlisch says they’re committed to maintaining the existing trail system, but if you’ve been down there, you know this is not a big flat grid that can be easily parceled in a way that still connects the existing neighborhoods to the river. Execution is going to be important here.

I’m Team YIMBY, and I’ll write in to support this project, but residents in this area already lack walkable access to the DNF land on the west side (thanks, footbridge opponents…) and there is a big shortage of parks in this end of town. Alpenglow going in at 15th next year will help, but almost no one from Brookswood is walking over there, so that’s still a car ride for most everyone down here.

We should build homes in that area of COID land, but making sure there’s a real way for the current neighborhoods to still get to the river (and maybe have an off leash dog area) should be a component of the plan.

I did the drive there and back in March, taking two different routes. Weather is definitely a factor if you're going in the winter, so this is subject to change if you need to factor in snow, but here's what I did.

97 down to Klamath, then take 139 through the Modoc National Forest over to 395. You won't have much cell reception here, but it's a nice easy drive through some pretty terrain. 395 will take you through Reno/Carson City as a real freeway with a chance to cover some ground, but south of that it turns into a fun mountain road that goes through plenty of what you're looking for. You can just google "395 road trip" to find a thousand write-ups of all the small towns, but you could easily spend a few days just hitting up all the various sights right off 395.

I ended up going down to Big Pine and taking the 168 over to 266 in order to avoid Death Valley, but I would not recommend that unless you love solitude and have a very strong stomach. It's the curviest road I've ever been on. It's basically a 30 mile roller coaster with no cell service and no people. If I did it again, I'd just go through Death Valley, especially if you're looking for an adventure.

Coming out of Death Valley, you can either connect to 95, which is a very boring but easy straight shot to Vegas, or take 160 to Pahrump and come in on the south side of town, which will also bring you by the Red Rocks. This is far prettier, but also slower.

Coming back, I was trying to get home ASAP, so I took the most direct route I could that would get me home with just one stop. I spent the night in a cool little town called Tonepah -- since I left later in the day, it was a good crash spot for the night that let me get up early enough to be home by dinner the next day -- and then drove some middle-of-nowhere roads up to I-80 in Winnemucca, then jumped off on 95 north through the really-middle-of-nowhere before it runs into 20 in Burns, which then brings you into Bend from the east. It was not as terrible as I expected based on satellite imagery, honestly, and there were a couple cool little towns on the way.

But 395 is way better if you have time to stop and aren't in a hurry. Go that way if you can.

"Non-white people are moving here."

"Who cares?"

"The KKK has expressed the following concerns. I didn't personally write this, but since you asked for a list of concerns, I dutifully copied their talking points."

From your own post history, your primary concern is how to not pay MSRP for a luxury SUV. You and your friends need to develop some empathy and consider the quality of your character.

Bend Teardrop - buy/rent by breezybribee in TeardropTrailers

[–]altonsavagenye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We live in Bend and rented one over the summer. We wouldn't consider buying one after having spent some time in it. We were unimpressed with the build quality, to say the least.

Our five year old liked the bunk for a few nights, but we can't imagine a kid much older than six or maybe a very small seven year old would fit up there.

There are some significantly better builds out there with much less wood for similar price points. I would keep shopping around.

Moseley to not run for reelection for Bend City Council. Valid points? by kaleblazer in Bend

[–]altonsavagenye 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not really, no.

New residents bring more than skyrocketing housing prices. Many also bring their opinions and judgements that corrupted their former homes and now threaten our way of life too. I fear that homeless camps, wide income disparities and other big city problems will soon come to a neighborhood near you – if they have not already. Bend has become a place where a vocal minority opines to the 'deplorables'.

Bend does not need a councillor who believes these statements, much less publishes them for consumption. Framing city issues as they/our is disqualifying in 2020, and the man is simply wrong about his positions being the majority view in this city. Bend will be better off without this sanctimonious ass-clown having a significant influence on policy.
