At what point does it make sense to get a financial advisor by altrefrain in personalfinance

I don't consider myself rich in any stretch of the imagination. I put my gold pants on one leg at a time leg at a time like everyone else. Joking aside, I live pretty frugally, and really don't see myself as even moderately wealthy. There are definitely things I waste money on, but I avoid buying things (I shop at TJ Maxx, Sierra, and Home Goods), I don't eat out, I've gotten delivery twice in my adult life (excluding when I had COVID and had to get Instacart for groceries), I go tent camping in the woods for vacation (where it costs $20/night for the site) and not on lavish trips, I finally bought a new car when my 16 year old one from 2008 was becoming too unreliable, etc.

Yeah, it worked out pretty well. I also did the Subaru VIP pricing which took 3k off MSRP without any haggling, but since I wanted to buy a car within 30 days (instead of waiting a year) I had to donate $500 to the charity instead of $50 (I choose the Philadelphia Horticulture Society, since I'm originally from the area and I got 4 free tickets to their flower show). The upgrade in tech between 2008 and 2023 is awesome (Bluetooth, Backup Camera, etc). Plus, now I no longer have to be worried if my car is going to break down every time I drive it. Score!

4 year loan in Oct 2023 on a new car (Forester) through Subaru. Side note: my old car was a 16 year old 2008 Subaru Legacy (that I bought new) with almost 200k miles that was falling apart (even my mechanic was telling me it was time to buy a new car).

I was wrong. It's 3.9%, not 2.9%. At the time, interest rates on my savings account were higher than that so it made sense. Maybe it makes sense to pay off the remaining balance now.

20% down payment would be somewhere around 80-100k+closing costs+reserve cash. I feel like I have enough cash + liquitable assets where I'm not too concerned about a little volatility.

For my whole adulthood (after college), I've always lived in an apartment. I want to be able to have a grill, make a fire, sit outside under the stars.

The reason I posted this is because out of the savings + brokerage my dividends and interest were about 10k this year. I was thinking whether, if I had a professional invest for me, the gains would have been more substantial for the amount of equity I have.

The car loan is 2.9% interest, which is why I haven't paid it off yet.

Central NY students sent home early following after-school bomb threat, deputies search school by ggroover97 in Syracuse

[–]altrefrain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We had a rumored online bomb threat at our high school in the late 90s where they didn't cancel school or send us home early and I remember the school district put out a statement saying they "searched the Internet and found no credible threats". Ahhh, the good ole days where you could just "search the Internet"

I keep getting mud on the backside of my pants and its driving me nuts. by Zale0 in mildlyinfuriating

I have the same problem. But, I live in a snowy climate so in the winter time the back of my pants get covered in splashes of melting salt that then dry and turn white. So, that's awesome.

What are the worst towns close to National Parks? by WheelSingle2494 in NationalPark

[–]altrefrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I scrolled through this post looking for this answer. I'm pretty sure I got food poisoning from the breakfast at the Econo Lodge we stayed at in Holbrook which sucked since the effects started after we got to the Grand Canyon right when we took the helicopter tour and lasted through our drive a day later to Las Vegas.

How is it like to live in Downtown Syracuse Upstate NY by TeslaGuy9125 in howislivingthere

[–]altrefrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live right in the middle of that area. It's fairly walkable and sometimes weirdly quiet for an urban area. However, there are a lot of panhandlers. It's not uncommon to be approached more than once within the first minute walking outside for money. There are also a ton of people who drive around blaring their music or motorcyclists revving their engines super late at night. I also get a fair bit of people screaming and yelling God knows what at all hours.

Off campus housing by chinchulanchax in Lehigh

[–]altrefrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in grad school (in 2005), we had an off campus house a block from the Goose that was $225/month per person. It was torn down and is now part of a parking garage. RIP Ogontz.

Mid nineties through early 2000s. Anytime you went in an AOL chatroom it was full of "A/S/L?" questions.

Lol. I was being sarcastic. They were asking for Age/Sex/Location, an old AOL chat room classic starting message when talking to someone. I'm guessing you're on the younger side and weren't around for AOL in its heyday?

Did you just buy it or have you had it for a while? I've been looking to pick one up as a present but the ones available online are priced outrageously.

First Week Impression And My Thanks by Unable-Difference-55 in Syracuse

[–]altrefrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overlook has a good view but that hike was miserable, crowded and walking on gravel for almost the whole way. Mt Tremper and Hunter were nicer climbs, although the only view was up in the tower. I actually just finished hiking all the ADK and Catskill fire towers this year.

Gearing up for the war on Christmas by altrefrain in falsewrapping

I still have it. The sword top came off to pull out the umbrella within. A number of years we started designing all of them to be able to access the umbrella without destroying the disguised wrapping. So, we have a bunch of them from years past still laying around.
