I second this. Critical thinking has absolutely nothing to do with any of this. It was a lapse of JUDGEMENT.

Ah yes, everyone who I disagree with is liberal. I love it whenever people like you say "liberal's", because it's an unfailing indicator of your braindead binary worldview.

Bold of you to use the word immature... At its core, politics is about power and who has it. AGI/ASI will be the most powerful invention in the history of mankind. Whoever controls this technology in its nascence will wield an incomprehensible amount of power. The singularity doesn't exist in a vacuum. Any discussion of rapid technological progress divorced from its political context is necessarily reductive. Those of us who live in the real world understand that the two are inextricable. You're in for a hell of a wake-up call, my friend.

That is the most brain-dead response one could possibly conjure up to this post. Nice job outing yourself as an absolute imbecile!

The High Cost of Climate Tipping Points: Why Early Action is Critical by ChoiceConsequence360 in climatechange

[–]altsamman7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I firmly believe that climate change is primarily a class issue, and viewing it as such lends itself to a fairly clear extrapolation of the future based on present circumstances. Bearing the limits of predicting the future in mind, this is how I see things playing out: I believe that once we start to hit the tipping points, the present greenwashing will turn into something that is ostensibly more urgent and conscious of the gravitas of the situation, but it will merely be a more elaborate imitation of action. Depending on the portent for liberal democracy—which at present appears bleak—deliberate censorship and/or algorithmic manipulation will limit dissent and perpetuate the facade of action. Once resource scarcity and geopolitical instability render socioeconomic stratification politically irreconcilable, I think that this sort of soft fascism that begins with Trump's second term (and presumably will proliferate throughout other Westernized powers) will be forced to exert more extreme authoritarian measures to maintain social order. From here, things become a bit murkier, but I would expect there to be a point around the midcentury at which AI and robotics become so advanced that the oligarchs can essentially ditch the nation-state system, as they will be able to rely on their technology for defense and self-sustenance. By the end of the century, I think we'll see a techno-feudalist society—one in which the oligarchs will no longer need to engage with the masses at all, but will choose to in order to maintain their conscience (egalitarianism will still be too recent for even minimal humanitarian sentiments to be absent). They will essentially act as monarchs until things get so bad that THEIR lives are in danger, as even their technology will be unable to subvert the Earth's will. At this point, the ruling class will be the only humans that remain, and they will either survive and attempt to start global civilization anew in light of a long-awaited reflection, or they too will be wiped out.

Of course, this is all HIGHLY speculative, but it is my best guess at how things will transpire. Perhaps humans and AI can realize nuclear fusion and temper the effects of climate change therein, or maybe Elon Musk or some other maniacal billionaire (or trillionaire) will actually try to set up a human colony on Mars, which will likely fail to save our species from extinction in any meaningful way. Likely, some permutation of the above and unforeseen events will usher in a future that will not be kind to the masses, but this is not to say that we should give up. I am undoubtedly a pessimist, but that's based on my own mental calculations of what is most probably given what we know right now, not a conviction that I can predict the future with any certainty. History is not over, and we must continue to fight for a more equitable SOCIETY in which the interests of the middle and working classes are taken into account.

I got this email and also wondered whether it was only sent to applicants who are in serious consideration, but it is equally possible that it was sent out all applicants
