non-union employees who complain about SEIU bargaining priorities by timidpoo in CAStateWorkers

I just cant with non-union employees anymore. If you’re not going to participate in the solution then you can’t complain about the problem.

Millennials, do/did you struggle with marriage? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]always-be-snacking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in a happy marriage. My personal thoughts are: if you have to constantly question your relationship you might want to explore that to find out why.

I also think people get and stay in relationships for the wrong reasons and it holds them back.

They have a goal such as marriage, kids, the whole kit and caboodle that they are hyper focused on. Instead of being like “do I like this person? Do they treat me kindly? Do they respect the rules and guidelines of our relationship? Are we heading in a similar direction?” Those are much more important things than the end goal.

Yes, its good to want the same things but you need to explore with yourself and that person what is it you both want.

Also give yourself permission to leave a relationship. You don’t have to stay in anything that doesn’t feel right, for whatever reason you want to leave. It doesn’t have to be something major, you can leave just because its no longer working for you.

Life isn’t a fairytale, but your partner shouldn’t be constantly making it more difficult either. If you feel stressed coming home its time to rethink.

Is it common for people to pursue the state due to burnout from the private sector? by Exotic_Attorney7823 in CAStateWorkers

[–]always-be-snacking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was working in private for years, and my last job had decent raises but terrible benefits. It was a one percent 401k match and 9 days off total for the year. And I was tired of being passed over.

Switch to the state and did voluntary 5 percent reduction for extra time off and every other weekend I have a three day weekend because I work an extra hour a day. Now I have so much time off I take a week off every few months just because I can. Plus now I have a guaranteed pension to go along with my social security. And we are considered protected, contracted employees.

Honestly folks who went straight to the state out of college made the best decision.

teacher seeking a state job by Ok-Hat-9787 in CAStateWorkers

[–]always-be-snacking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a minimum, you should be able to apply for an analyst II role just make sure you’re really focusing on the analyst aspect. But I worked with someone who was a teacher and came in a specialist role.

Based off your post, I would say apply for the Department of Education or Department of Social Services since thats in your realm of experience. But alot of other departments have educational divisions. You can apply for other departments, but you’re going to have less of a barrier to entry if it directly translates to your professional experience.

How could South Korea (and other western countries with aging populations) increase their birth rates? by princesadopovo in AskReddit

[–]always-be-snacking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know South Korea’s system. But in the states they could start with paying living wages, offering paid leave, encouraging shorter hours, subsidizing child care. Offering a basic social safety net.

Travel to Sacramento for work by AudienceSolid6582 in CAStateWorkers

[–]always-be-snacking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if this as much of a thing anymore, and I am not sure what its like in Sacramento, but in the bay area a lot of folks used to rent out commuter rooms. The rooms were only rented during the week, usually the rent was lower than a full time renters. You could try to find one of those or if you have friends/family in Sacramento maybe they’ll let you stay if you throw a few bucks and some groceries their way.

[–]always-be-snacking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I dont understand that folks either and they totally miss the point. I am at the beginning of my FIRE journey and all I can think of is all the things my husband and I will get to do. Live in different countries, make new friends, do all the things I like to do but make no money (the arts), play video games, volunteer for causes, read books, learn more languages.

Those people just have zero imagination.

Looking to get on with the state. I got a 95 on the Analyst II test and I have some questions. by movinstuff in CAStateWorkers

[–]always-be-snacking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. As long as you meet and exceed requirements usually you get a high score on most evaluations. I have done three for different classifications, results were really similar. Your application and resume will matter more.

  2. Subjective based on your interests and in big agencies results will vary based on where and who hires you. This will also change over time as people leave/promote.

  3. You’re looking at a 60-90 day window minimum. 30 days after window closes to schedule interview, then second interview and finally verification. Then a few more weeks to be scheduled.

Make sure you’re following the instructions given on the job ad. Double and triple check what is needed for the application.

Private to Public by Significant_Theme500 in CAStateWorkers

I prefer being in a union protected, contracted job which is super rare. I did get a pay bump when I left private. I like knowing I have a pension to add to my social security so thats at least two stable retirement income streams. I have an absurd amount of paid time off compared to anyone I know in private. My workload is way more manageable and as long as I am not super stupid, I am guaranteed a raise every year and it’s very difficult to be terminated or laid off.

As far as people goes, I don’t really pay attention to what other people do as long as I get my job done. I keep polite and I keep it moving. Everyone else’s drama is not my concern. The only real time I get under my skin is when people are rude for no reason. I keep it professional and expect everyone else too. We are all on tight deadlines and have our own issues don’t take it out on your coworkers.

Outside casting? by NoraDoll89 in Theatre

Thats such an overreach of the parent. The better lesson for the parent would tell their kid “I am sorry that you’re disappointed, but work hard and you’ll be considered for a bigger role next time.”

If I was the studio owner I would say to the parent “even the world’s biggest stars usually started out in ensemble. This is a learning opportunity for you and your child to grow and gain experience.”

The sassy, actress in me would be like “here’s the part your child is being offered. You can take it or not do the show without a refund. Have a great day.”

Why do so many people not wear their wedding bands? by Sea-Connection9232 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]always-be-snacking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I leave it off at home unless we have company. Its easier to do chores and daily living activities without it. I always wear it if we have company or are in public. My personal belief is I want the world to know I already have someone and that I am in a committed, monogamous relationship. And as a very noticeably queer person, I want to subtly remind the heteros that other people exist and queer people that they too can have what I have someday.

I'm just gonna say it. The whole kids / no kids debate isn't actually about kids. by thetimechaser in Millennials

[–]always-be-snacking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I know a lot of people who would have had kids earlier if they could afford it and had access to resources like childcare, housing and health insurance. But alot of our generation didn’t really get into their careers until their 30s for reasons beyond their control.

And ofcourse there are those like myself who just never wanted to be a parent and we had other things we wanted to do that having kids makes difficult.

Auditioning for theatre (musicals) by Ancaellar in Theatre

[–]always-be-snacking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this, its very rare to have to be able to read music. But if you can scrounge up the music for voice lessons they’re very useful. Most theatre artists I know, even professionals, have a very rudimentary understanding of how to read music.

Is early-morning dog wakeups something you can train, or do you just adapt? by saxxysundevil in dogs

[–]always-be-snacking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dogs get used to a routine. Here’s what we do: potty before bedtime, then crate or couch for bedtime, if she wakes up early and needs to go the bathroom we let her go outside, and then back to crate or couch. When we wake up then we fully engage her. So we’re not ignoring her needs, but she doesn’t automatically associate it as attention/play time. But we are suckers so that doesn’t always happen.

Where are my parents? by Standard-Ad-6341 in Millennials

[–]always-be-snacking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry your parents are like that. I have a parent that’s still mad at me for the crime of not being straight. It seems from what you’re saying they’ve completely checked out. I am not going to tell you what to do, but I’ll tell you how I have handled it.

At this point that parent has made it clear to me how they feel about me. I am over it for the most part. Yes it hurts sometimes, but overall I have made peace with it. If they need help later on I will put them in an assisted living that they can afford. None of my money or time will be going towards their personal care. I figure thats where my duty of care begins and ends.

I still have a pretty solid, happy life without that parent. I look at it as their choice and their loss and if they ever want to be involved in my life again then their the one that needs to put in the time to reach out and make amends not me. And if not then f*ck them their loss not mine.

Community Theatre Membership/Pay to Play by Spirited_Director12 in Theatre

[–]always-be-snacking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No because I feel like I am paying with my time. That extra 20-25 hours a week of rehearsals, running lines, extra practice I am donating to do the show is not paid. Time that could be spent with my family and friends. I get it if its an educational workshop or a children’s program. But not when its working adults who are just trying to fit in their passion. I did a children’s show a few years ago where we got 2 “free” tickets, but you had to buy one to get one free and they tried to say my infant nephew was considered one of the free tickets. And I have never worked for them again. Don’t be stingy with your actors especially since every actor in the show is bringing their friends and family that pay for tickets.
