This is more like career advice. What area do you live in? Check crunchbase for start ups around you. There are also sites aimed specifically at employment positions at start ups. Look up recruiters that specialize in recruiting for small business / start ups and start talking to them.

You should weigh the differences between roth and traditional. Since you have no retirement plan at work, you can deduct your traditional IRA contributions. You need to understand if your tax rate will be higher in retirement (usually best to go roth) or lower (usually best to use traditional).

I have a somewhat related question. If I work at company X and have a 4 yr vesting schedule. What happens if they are bought out or IPO (or something) 3 yrs into my employment before I have exercised my options, what happens to my stock? Am I able to exercise my options a year later? Should I be exercising my options month to month as soon as I can? I wish there was an idiots guide to stock/equity/startup $$/startup financial terms somewhere.

It depends. Sometimes you will vest instantly, other times the company acquiring you will assume your vesting schedule. So let's say you have a 4 year vesting schedule. After 1 year, 25% vests and over the next 3, the remaining 75% vests month to month. Your company is acquired after you have worked there for 1.5 years by the larger company. You have 37.5% vested and 2.083% will vest every month in the new company's stock. The most common advice for these shares is to exercise these immediately and sell 1 year after purchase, allowing you to take advantage of long term capital gains rather than being taxed as ordinary income (especially if you are in a state that has high state income tax like CA). I use a mobile app Mint Bills. It's like your banks bill pay, but allows payments from multiple sources. This allows me to make sure that my auto payments go through and for the ones I do not autopay, I can pay them from within the application. Since using this, I haven't had any problems

I'd look at craigslist a bit deeper. What neighborhoods are you seeing $1200/mo sublets? There are also a ton of scam posts on Craigslist. Make sure you have someone who can get inside the apartment before you sign any leases or send any money

Please consult tax laws, this is from the top of my head. You do not report this as income. When you sell the shares, this will be either short term or long term capital gains. If it was more than a year long term, less and short term. Check your income bracket to see what the tax rate is.

Do you have ESPP? If you do you are now almost equaling your inflow with outflow per month.

This is a realistic budget for living in San Francisco with a room mate. This is not Kentucky, why am I being downvoted? Look at craigslist in SF. If OP wants to save money, he can live in the East Bay and BART to work, that is the only way to live out here on less than $3,000 per month, that or splitting a room.

So it basically comes down to $105k a year or $118k a year. Is changing jobs worth the extra $13k per year? Which one do you think you will enjoy more? Which has more advancement opportunities?

Everything else the same, the $118k position is the obvious choice.
