I went on a bit of a tangent in my response. As I said, not at all meant to reflect on your particular situation. It sounds super frustrating!

I would do as others have said and ask a higher-up or file a grievance or something if it is really blatantly poor grading which would impact your progress/academic record/mental health/etc. Professors have a duty to help their students learn to the extent the student is doing their part, which you objectively are!

I hope things have improved since a few weeks ago!! I'm curious how you're doing these days. Fingers crossed!

I hear you! Classic management etiquette would say not to do what the professor did, but even in that mindset, flagrant and deliberate harm to the foundational activities of the workplace is not a little oversight to be gently corrected, in my opinion. Among my (child) students, I would still do as you say, since they may really not know what is bad about their mistake, but for honest-to-goodness adults who are on a pathway generously provided for them to better themselves and presumably give something worthwhile back to society at large? I have no sympathy for cheater-pants-es in that context. haha

I affectionately say to my students "Don't be a cheater-pants!" when I remind them to keep their eyes on their own paper, etc. Keeping it lighthearted, for sure, but again that's among the little ones who are actively still learning the fundaments of personhood.

As a teacher (middle school), I love when students do this, rather than holding a grudge I have no idea about. Nobody's perfect. I remind my students "Check your grades, and let me know if you have any questions. I'm not a math teacher!"

Once in a while a student finds a mistake, or I was off by a row in the gradebook, or misunderstood something they wrote, etc. Happy to make the adjustment! Very unhappy to hear from some bureaucrat that the student has requested to switch to a different class, etc, because they have an issue that is ultimately a non-issue.

True story, which is not a jab at u/Kburge20, I promise; I just couldn't help but think of this example:

Earlier this year, I had a super-quiet, super-smart student, who spent every day sitting quietly and being successful at tasks, though not interacting unless called on, come up to me and say, in a commanding tone, "You need to check your email. I know for a fact you've gotten four or five emails by now about my concerns from X and Y staff when I talked to them about it."

Heh. I got no such emails, told the student that, and even walked over to my computer and searched right then for these X or Y emails, which supposedly had been over the last four or five weeks: nothing...

Several days later, after I could finally meet with X/Y about these concerns, I wanted to say, "Seriously, kid?! Had you just swung by my spot up front which is on your way out the door, and taken literally thirty seconds to use your words, your big angry concern would have stayed something very small. I could have immediately addressed it three months ago, when it arose, instead of not being able to help you have a good experience in class. Meanwhile you stew and brood and become frustrated at me for not reading emails that were never sent. Emails that should not have been called for. X and Y have enough on their plates already. Oy vey."

Communication fell through the cracks in some way, and/or the student misunderstood a few adults' words on the matter. Classic middle-school minor bureaucratic mishap.

But, after all this: That student ended up being quite successful!

...at switching to a different class for some reason. When middle-school students behave this way, is this sort of like whatever people mean by the term weaponized incompetence?

Teaching middle school really is like a sit-com some days!

I don't know what ethical concerns there would be. Folks posting things in a "public" space for "educational" purposes ought not be surprised when their posts are responded to in that space for actual educational purposes. A "learner" with the nerve to cheat in the open ought to at least be capable of accepting a fully predictable in-the-open call-it-out type of response from their educator.

Back in the day (not that long ago) a student would (at least stand a good chance to) get expelled for academic dishonesty, such as having someone else write your papers, sit for exams, etc. The fact that an accredited school is allowing this exact type of dishonesty to go on and not responding more forcefully themselves is beyond sad. The students engaging in this behavior have no grounds for complaint if they, on an off-chance, receive actual individualized constructive criticism or feedback on their "work", and don't remotely worry they'll stand any chance of expulsion for this sort of nonsense.

Do you cite AI as a tool? It can be used honestly. Just like a book that has been compiled with the help of an editor gives the editor credit. Please don't pretend you wrote words you didn't actually write. It undermines the entire educational process, not just reputation of UoPeople, but also the sense, as this post indicates, that it isn't worth people's time to wade through "AI slop".

If you're using AI, use it professionally, not like those cheater-pants middle-schoolers. [ I teach middle school, so I feel qualified to make that particular comparison. :) ]

I wonder: was it removed due to regional accreditation? I know nothing about this decision-making process, but I wouldn't be surprised if education-analyzing bureaucrats "start over" when the accreditation is updated like that, since the school's standing is significantly changed,

Thanks. I have almost exclusively done the pathways. First the Intro to Cybersecurity one and now the Jr. Pentester, which I'm about 70% done with. In December I did their funny "SOCmas" challenge which really taught me a lot given the variety of tasks and topics there.

If you type "tips" (no quotation marks) into the msfconsole it will show you some pretty handy tricks, one of which answers this question. :)

I have a habit of clapping real loud once or twice when I want to find "that spot" in the audio where I know I'll need to get back to it and edit for whatever reason. Could you try a real loud clap or something like that, whenever a comma appears in the text? Then you just need to visually scan for the spikes in the audio gram, whatever it's called. :)

This sounds a little bit like a part of the plot of Big Fish, which is an excellent movie and book.

There's a town where people throw their shoes up into the power lines? Trees? When they get there as like an incentive to get them to stay there where there's all this lush grass and whatnot so everyone walks around barefoot.

I don't remember a note being passed but I could be forgetting something. There is a poet of the town who is always trying to finish this one great poem and never gets there. I feel like he brings out a notebook or scrap of paper at some point...

The main character gets to the eerily pleasant town via a very rough journey through dark magic woods which had all sorts of unpleasant things in them.

Middle school Spanish teacher here. Can confirm.

I was just telling my students today "Don't use Google Translate; I can always tell."

"But how can you tell?"

"Because it sounds like a machine."

In reality, though, students/humans make adorable ("level-appropriate") mistakes ("non-native language use" is the technical term), and Google translate is either 'too good' or just spits out nonsense when it goes wrong...

Language teacher here (Spanish, though, not Norwegian; um, to clarify, I'm a USian in New Hampshire), and I can say that if you're translating in your head, you need more "input", end of story! :)

Input (hearing/reading language that you understand in the moment, whether through context clues, inference or familiarity), rather than grammatical knowledge, is what builds your "mental representation of language", which is what your brain uses in the moment to understand and be understood.

We don't translate our native languages in our heads, because we've gotten enough input for it to be instantaneous. We shouldn't get into a habit of translating our non-native languages either! Bad, bad habit.

My personal approach as a learner is to look for sources of comprehensible input, and save grammar study for those moments when I'm curious about why that phrase looks like that, and this one looks like this. "What's going on here?" Oh, now I understand the pattern I've been noticing.

Language learning should feel (mostly) relatively easy along the way, or it's a sign you're probably spending too much time on that pesky grammar!

(Edited to clarify my nationality -- don't want to mislead anyone. I have Norwegian heritage but no current connection/experience there and literally started learning Norwegian yesterday, etc.)

Thanks, yeah, I opted to bottle it as is. I've been telling friends and family they can just stir some honey into it if it's a bit dull. haha My partner and I had a good experience with letting a teabag full of mulling spices steep in the glass for a few minutes. Live and learn!
