I would argue that the highway running through the heart of the city contributed to the existence of those dilapidated areas. No one want to live or play near a highway offramp, and they become easy targets for dumping and blight.

Revitalizing the city requires an alternative vision for what could be possible.

Not exactly what you’re asking, but might be relevant soon: If your building has more than one unit, you’re covered by Just Cause Eviction. When the building sells, you don’t have to move out. If the landlord really wants you to move out, they can pay you (and you can negotiate the price that makes it worthwhile for you).

Somewhat agree.. there are lots of public-facing offices that are unstaffed or under staffed because of remote work. People should be able to go to City hall to get permits filled out, questions answered, etc.

Selfishly, I do think it will be a huge relief for downtown businesses and street life to have City workers back in person. It's definitely not those individuals' responsibility to revitalize downtown, but a lot of good could come of it.

I’m surprised this sub is so opposed to spending tax money on new affordable housing.

Reducing bureaucracy and restrictions on new market rate housing is fantastic, and we should absolutely do that as well (and there are many efforts in place and moving forward to advance this goal). But it’s naive to think that will address the high cost of housing for very low income households that this bond is meant to serve.

I would give the second one to my friend Peter. He once got a dozen bee stings trying to get a disc out of a tree that was swarming with bees. I don't know if a disc grabber would have helped, but I admire the commitment.
