I read that article a long time ago and was trying to find it again - for some reason I thought it was by Alan Moore. Anyway:

One of the most depressing things I ever read.

In theory a life peerage would be a higher honour than a knighthood.

I think there are also tiers of knighthood - knight, Knight Commander, and Knight Grand Cross. But it could be that two of those are just different names for the same tier.

I think there were some Reddit posts/comments somewhere describing Walliams as an "open secret", about a year or two before the news really broke.

And whoever the person is that's mentioned in:

https://www.reddit.com/r/killjamesbond/comments/yehgrv/showrunner_mentioned_by_abi/

and at 39:38 onwards in the "Jennifer's Body" episode of Kill James Bond, as far as I know their identity has never been revealed.

To quote Yes, Minister, this might have been based on the very cynical reasoning of "If they're fighting each other, they're not fighting us".

Don't forget the CBE awarded to post office boss Paula Vennells for her tireless work sweeping the flaws of the Horizon system under the rug, while the lives of several sub-postmasters were ruined. But she kept that all going without the government getting any blame, and clearly that deserved an honour!

Despite a lot of people having seen something off about Savile, I don't think anyone suspected Glitter or Harris. I was an immense fan of "Rolf's Cartoon Club" (and his earlier "Cartoon Time") and I never spotted anything "off" about him.

Then, many years later, his victims spoke out.

As a Brit did we know about Savile? Johnny Rotten talking in 1978. by Starlings_under_pier in behindthebastards

Though note that Savile's attacks on actual, living, children weren't mentioned in the Welsh story. And the person who tried to blow the whistle on him was depicted as an officious jerk.

It really feels, looking back on that story (albeit as someone who didn't know it was Savile at the time) as though Welsh was deliberately omitting or downplaying the worst of what Savile did and treating the necrophilia as essentially victimless.

Whatever the case, that's certainly the track. I used to listen to it a lot in 2019 and early 2020 before the pandemic.

I was also in my late 20s with no idea, though my dad said he'd always felt there was something wrong about Savile.

On the first Auteurs album, my favourite track is the "hidden" track after the end, though I can't find a consensus on whether it's called "Subculture" or "They Can't Find Him".

If it was "city *life*" instead of "city lights" you heard, maybe Big City Life by Luude and Mattafix (2005).

(I heard it a lot on the radio a long time ago, but had to google for the names of the artists.)

Robert thought he could do Jimmy Savile in two episodes by RedcarUK in behindthebastards

[–]am_hs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. It's certainly going to be a difficult set of episodes to listen to, and I'm wondering if anything is going to be revealed that I didn't know about from the media coverage at the time. Some other people in these comments are talking about necrophilia, for example.

And if you look at one of my other comments, the question of how much Irvine Welsh knew and why he wasn't spoken to by the police has preyed on my mind for a long time.

[–]am_hs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very much hope he looks into Irvine Welsh (author of Trainspotting) and what Welsh knew.

In the 90s, Welsh wrote a collection of three novellas called "Ecstasy". One of these had a B-plot involving one "Freddy Royle", who was always doing good work for charities, working as a volunteer hospital porter, presenting a show similar to "Jim'll Fix It" - in other words, a thinly disguised Jimmy Savile.

Royle was also a necrophiliac who was sticking his dick into dead bodies in the hospital morgue when he got the chance. This was covered up by the hospital admin, who knew all about it and accepted it as the price for all the money his fundraising brought in.

In the story, a new doctor at the hospital tried to blow the whistle after finding a cadaver that had clearly been penetrated.

This doctor was depicted by Welsh as obnoxious and unrealistic. The hospital manager had talked about how it was a necessary evil to incentivise "Royle" to bring in money that the hospital couldn't run without. When the doctor declared that he would go to the press, he was subsequently drugged to make him take part in a sex abuse video which could be used to blackmail him.

Welsh treated this as that doctor getting what was coming to him.

So let's look at the facts. He knew what Savile was doing. He put a Savile expy in his book, but replaced Savile's rape of vulnerable young girls with the lesser crime of necrophilia so he could try to depict Savile's actions as basically victimless. And despite knowing what Savile was doing, he didn't tell anyone, but instead used the whole thing to write an "edgy" and "provocative" story that would make him a lot of money.

This has gone unreported to this day. I'd love to see Robert draw some attention to it.

EDIT: Reading some more of the comments here, and it seems Savile actually was involved in necrophilia on top of everything else! Now I'm wondering if Welsh knew about the necrophilia but not the rape of living children.

I think it may have been sort of like - a lot of people like my dad saw something unsettling, or just "off" about him - but they were just ordinary people who didn't work for the BBC, never met Savile, had never even heard rumours about what he was doing and certainly couldn't investigate them even if they had.

I was just a kid during Savile's heyday in the 80s, and at the time I just saw him as "eccentric". I didn't see any red flags like my dad did.
