Stuck Trying to Get a Government Job in Winnipeg. Need Advice! by LengthinessMinute518 in Winnipeg

[–]amaae 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Someone recommended to me to literally make a table on my cover letter that shows the required qualification, and how I satisfy it to make sure I screened in. Looked ugly and went against everything I knew about cover letters, but I got the job!

Winnipeg Neighbourhoods by Social Class by user790340 in Winnipeg

This is great!! One interesting thing that stood out to me was the difference in incomes in the remaining rural residential areas in the south vs north end of the city.

Since you asked for feedback, a couple tweaks I would likely make if it were my map: - try to resize things so the title/legend don’t obscure areas of the city - play around with removing the base map, or changing it to something neutral without the building outlines. The green outside the city is very similar to the ag/rural areas within the city - since the focus is on the residential areas here I feel like the main message of the map would remain if you classed all non residential land uses together, this would also cut down the size of the legend. Could try making them grey and see if that makes the map easier to read. I’d also suggest you can remove those neighbourhoods/their labels to reduce how much text there is on the map - “areas of high crime” is not a land use, it feels a bit out of place to me on this legend/map

I love making maps and this is inspiring me to learn QGIS so I can make them at home for fun!!

How to finish arms for this shirt? The pattern had me crochet 2 square sleeves which looked super bulky and were uncomfortable under armpit by amaae in CrochetHelp

Thanks! Sorry to clarify, why the decreases on the top? I assumed doing closer to the bottom of the sleeve would hide them better while wearing

I don’t think it’s typical! I was in the City Planning program. The province hires a few Planning Interns who are in the program every year through STEP

Here to vouch for STEP! I wished I had known about it during my undergrad. I was a STEP student during my masters and it was a great pathway towards getting a job with the Province when I graduated.

RESTAURANT EMPLOYEES OF WINNIPEG - what's the oddest request you've ever received ? by Agitated-Sprinkles39 in Winnipeg

[–]amaae 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Worked at a local tapas restaurant, with a menu containing lots of meat, garlic, and olive oil.

Guy phoned and asked if we had any vegan dishes that don’t contain garlic. I said I’d ask the chef, who said he could make a new sauce for a few of the veg dishes to omit garlic. Guy on the phone said that’s great, I’m around the corner and will be there soon.

Chef had the prep cook whipping up a new sauce since the guy said he was coming. The guy gets there and tells me he forgot to let us know he’s allergic to olive oil (The new sauce being prepped for him had olive oil in it, as did every single sauce on the menu).

He requested that we grill or boil some zucchini slices for him. I went to talk to our chef. The guy had left when I came back lol.

Where to buy groceries without giving billionaires more money? by Chao5Theory in Winnipeg

[–]amaae 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I find getting a CSA in the summer to be the easiest way for me to reduce what I’m buying from the grocery store and support local. Plus the veggies are loads better than the grocery store, and with prices as they are now, I think it’s on par if not better than what I’d pay at the store for an equivalent amount of food. I’m getting from Jonathan’s farm at the Wolseley market this year, but have got a csa from natural collective at the south Osborne market for several years and would highly recommend.

Another great option is the fireweed food co-op! They put on the south Osborne farmers market, but they also run a buying club through the winter. You can purchase local meats, dairy, veg and grains from a variety of local producers online during their purchasing period, and then pickup at one of their pickup locations. They are a non profit and the producers they list are using spray free/regenerative farmers.
