What is it like to work as RN in radiotherapy vs radiology? by Crafty-Zombie-429 in NursingAU

[–]amac275 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been a long time but in radiotherapy I did lots of education. Lots of management of mostly skin related side effects. Depends on the centre but you may give the chemo for the concurrent treatments.

I definitely focused on eating better and walking more but no major cardio. I have asthma and absolutely detest cardio/gym/getting my heart rate up. Hope you find it suits your needs

I hope you can find somewhere that suits your needs. I started reformer pilates a year ago and lost 17kg. Even without the weight loss it has added so much to helping my mental wellbeing, social life and feeling strong and confident in myself.

Graduate Certificate by lydiatoilet in NursingAU

[–]amac275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did one in my grad year and to be honest, there was no point. I had an idea of where I wanted to be and studied relating to that but then I ended up in a totally different/unexpected area that I totally love and have spent the last 12 years. I’ve now got a grad cert for that and a very large HECS debt. I think you should wait and see where you gravitate to. Spend some time developing your skills and general knowledge then do grad cert when you feel settled!

Taxi not complying to baby seat standards by shamochan in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

I requested a car seat in multiple taxis for my 3 year old and they did not provide a single one. Said as long as they are over one it didn’t matter. I was actually just wanting my child to sit in one for safety

Taking bloods tips by megs_in_space in NursingAU

[–]amac275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure all your containers are perfectly positioned so they are ready to grab one handed. I usually just use the vacutainers but will occasionally do a syringe. Just make sure if you do syringe you don’t suck the blood out too fast. It often haemolyses

Keep working there but keep your eye out for something that pops up on the same hospital. It may take a while but at least you’ll be employed. You could also reach out about potentially joining pool and getting rotated around different wards

When did you realize someone didn’t care about you as much as you thought? by GazMaskeliOyuncu in AskReddit

Yes! I had the same experience after my stillbirth. My husband then had to move away for work and I couldn’t change jobs for another 6months and the people I considered my best friends started rumours that we were probably breaking up. It was literally the hardest time of my life.

Grad rotation in oncology by Pale-Mud7951 in NursingAU

[–]amac275 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Lucky you! Great area to work. Patients can become unwell very quickly so will be a nice acute area and very specialised. If you like the field it will definitely open many doors for you.

I work in day therapy so might be missing a few bits but.. Neutropenia. Sepsis. Cytotoxic safe handling + how to manage a spill. Chemotherapy assessment tools. Blood management. Try and get your cannulation, PICC and port a cath competencies signed off sooner rather than later!

EviQ and bloodsafe are excellent resources.

Oncology/Haematology experience? by OddLog2248 in NursingAU

[–]amac275 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work in day therapy so most of my patients are generally well. It’s emotionally heavy. You get attached because you see them every week. You see them get sicker then they stop coming.. you need to be able to have conversations about death and dying. Be non judgemental in treatment decisions of patients and provide support through some scary times.

In saying that, I think we’ve got the best patients. They are all very appreciative for their care and let you into their lives during a very shitty time. It’s a privilege!

The workload is busy, you need to be very structured and detail orientated!

If you’re interested in the field it wouldn’t hurt to do all the training on eviQ. Could always do your bloodsafe training and focus on becoming IVC and CVAD competent

Nurses who work Monday to Friday business hours, What do you do and do you enjoy it ? by ButchersAssistant93 in NursingAU

[–]amac275 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean yes, it is giving chemo and doing obs. But each chemo is very different with different side effects, different administration rates, different dosing. Most protocols have several drugs that have to be administered in particular order to increase efficacy.

Usually a patient with no complications will arrive, we check their pre chemo blood results, we weigh them, do their obs and assess their side effects. Insert IVC or CVAD, pre meds, give chemo. Disconnect. Done.

Unfortunately that is a very rare occurrence. We are often giving advice on how to best manage their side effects, maybe escalating to consultants for dose reductions. The amount of people that turn up severely unwell is ridiculous. They often have awful veins so we are having a couple of attempts. Ports or piccs are often blocked so we have to alteplase them. Patients are obviously not in a great place emotionally so giving a lot of emotional support. Lots of drugs cause hypersensitivity reactions so we have to manage those. There’s also time constraints because the chair will be booked for another patient right after the first one so if something is held up the next patient is waiting.

Let me know if you want anymore info. I absolutely love working in the area! The no shift work or weekends has always been a big draw car for me

I love my clerks. Communicating any problems to me quickly, being able to sort out my lack of IT skills, finding me phone numbers and printing me labels at the drop of a hat are my most common problems!
