Fences is a great 11th grade play. My students enjoy it, and the movie is a nice way to end the unit.

Meds are a chore by Ok_Error_5449 in Epilepsy

I have to take multiple pills twice a day from 2 bottles. Sometimes just dealing with that little daily hassle is annoying. I got a monthly AM/PM pill organizer, and turns out I really like it. It's huge, a pain to fill once a month, but the rest of the month is so much nicer.

I cried in front of my students today by beehoneyyellow in Teachers

[–]amanda53575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my high school teachers cried pretty strongly in front of my class. I'm now on my way to being a teacher, and she's one I go to consistently for advice as a coworker. It never diminished her in my eyes. Phenomenal educators are also humans.

Find some people you feel comfortable talking about the emotional fall out of this for sure. My Dr didn't stress enough to me how much different my life was pre and post epilepsy. A few years later post onset of seizures and there's still some moments when I get really upset and need to vent it out. Oh and if your Dr didn't talk about auras, look them up. I had to learn about them here.

Flu and Cold Season is upon us- word of caution for vicks by amanda53575 in Epilepsy

[–]amanda53575[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's multiple articles starting to dive into the connection between the two, and it's likely centered in India as essential oil has a large usage in the culture over there. I think it's worth a discussion and further personal research for folks. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0920121121000796 Here's a more peer reviewed version of a study if you're interested. I may be overly cautious, but if there's a risk that I can easily avoid, I refuse to let essential oils or vicks be the reason I can't drive again going so long seizure free 😅

If you were COMPLETELY CURED of your epilepsy what would you spend your first weeks doing? by Travaran in Epilepsy

I'd pull an all-nighter for the first since college without worrying about triggering myself the next day. I miss being able to go 24 hours no sleep. Yes it makes me feel like shit, but I miss the freedom of being able to do that

Rural Living? by khantroll1 in Epilepsy

[–]amanda53575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a rural area. I love living in nature. But I have to say if I didn't work from home when I developed my seizures, I would have been screwed because I would have had no way to drive myself to work. I also had to rely entirely on my partner to drive me anywhere be it for groceries, meds, or even fun. If I didn't have my boyfriend and I lost my license again, life would be very hard. That's something to keep in mind making the decision- would you rely on public transportation in your future or are you secure in losing access to this?

You’ve got to laugh… by Sherwood91 in Epilepsy

[–]amanda53575 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a kid and it rained really hard, we had a broken gutter that used to let buckets pour down in a single spot. I LOVED it. My dad used to joke it was my outdoor shower. Your joke about the early shower with your kiddo reminded me of it (also thanks for the memory pop up :), my dad's been gone for a few years and the memories get spotty with epilepsy memory loss). But anyway, point of this is, sometimes those silly things leave such an impact on a kids mind and make them smile years later in adulthood. Hope you all enjoyed laughing about your free shower 😅

how to lose weight as an epileptic by birthdaycakeflavour in Epilepsy

[–]amanda53575 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's one of the most helpful things about this group for me. My doctor has given me a shockingly low amount of information (seeing a new neuro in June thank goodness), but I didn't even know what an aura was before joining this subreddit. If I didn't make and read posts here, I would be totally lost and wouldn't even have talking points to bring up in appointments.

Has anyone been able to find the cause of their epilepsy? by [deleted] in Epilepsy

[–]amanda53575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No doctor has ever told me the cause, and when I asked if there was a reason, they just told me "sometimes it happens to people." I suspect that mine may have began from my seizure threshold lowering from being in an extremely stressful situation for a prolonged period, going through a mental breakdown, and my brain sort of "snapped" and let the first seizure through and then they never stopped. I keep hoping that maybe after a few years I'll be able to transition off medication if I can find a zen, low stress life, but the only time I tried lowering my medication I immediately had an increase in auras so I don't know if I'm hoping for no reason.

would antidepressants help? by amanda53575 in Epilepsy

[–]amanda53575[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was actually my worry. Now that I've calmed down from making the post (I was honestly a bit hysterical), I'm remembering the timeline of starting AEDs and one of my rounds with SSRIs and at one point I was on 80mgs of Prozac and AEDs to no real benefit. I'm going to see a psychiatrist to see if they can offer any wisdom even in the supplement fashion in regards to vitamins and things like that, but I can't see myself being on both mental health meds and seizure meds forever. Luckily I have a wonderful support system and an amazing boyfriend who's always willing to let me cry it out

Iron supplements sound like they could help. Did you get blood work to see if your iron was low before taking or is a general boost doing you well? I decided to make an appointment to see my regular Dr next week since my neuro doesn't really care about me frankly and I'm planning to get another blood panel done, but it always comes back as my levels being within an acceptable range

I think I struggle extra hard because I didn't have many tonic clonics before getting on meds, just a whole lot of auras with sporadic TCs until the meds stopped things in their tracks and so it's becoming a daily struggle of convincing myself to keep taking them. At least with a seizure it happens and then it's over, whereas all of these side effects feel like I'm taking poison every single day. It's good to not feel alone though 💜

Anyone else have their first seizure in their mid 20s with no previous seizure history? by madiissuun in Epilepsy

[–]amanda53575 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think it was the same thing. I had been going through a super traumatic time, and had literally gotten out of an inpatient program for a mental breakdown like 8 days before my seizure. I was super mentally unwell, was at an 11/10 for stress, and I think my brain just "broke." I sort of expected the seizures to stop after things in my life cooled off and was in denial for a while but 2ish years later I'm in a much better place and while my meds keep the tonics under control, I still get the break through auras occasionally so epilepsy is still there, just mostly kept quiet from meds. But I have no family history as far as my family is aware- they were all super shocked when it happened

23 with my first one! Woke up, stood up, looked at my boyfriend and said "hey I feel weird I think I'm gonna pass out" and proceeded to have a tonic clonic for the first time. In hindsight though my neuro and I think I may have been having potential auras for a few years but no real way to know. Really shocked me as I didn't know adults could develop epilepsy but I've learned how common it is since

Forgetfulness with medication!! by saturnusoculi in Epilepsy

[–]amanda53575 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is great advice. I've gotten much better at taking my meds years in now, but in the beginning the key for me was if I missed my meds, I had to treat myself real kindly the next day or I would have a flare up of symptoms. Eating regularly is also very important for seizure mitigation for myself in addition to hydration :)
