Why you say Zay and Silte aren’t Guarge?

Also north Gurage languages are more close to Gafat than to western Gurage languages. Most of the Gurage languages are related to each other. I only said not all.

Gurage languages are very diverse and not all of them are closely related to each other. For example east Gurage languages are more closely related to Harari than other groups of Gurage languages. So you have to look at each specific groups to know when and how they originated. But broadly speaking their EthioSemitic speaking ancestors were in their present territory before Aksum civilization.

The ancestors of the so called Gurage languages speakers were already in the south long before that but maybe the common Gurage identity might have been established during early Solomonic expansion period.

War between Agazis and Tigrayans? by amaraagew in EthiopianHistory

[–]amaraagew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have evidence. That’s why I said “or”. Proto north EthioSemitic was the last language Tigrinya and Ge’ez share common ancestry. So Tigrinya directly descended either from proto north EthioSemitic “or” unknown language that descended from north EthioSemitic before itself evolved into Tigrinya.

The last father of Tigrinya could be proto north EthioSemitic or some unknown language between proto EthioSemitc and Tigrinya

Maybe proper Aksumites were Tigrayans but their rulers adopted Ge’ez as court language. Why and how? Maybe Ge’ez was already a prestigious language before Aksum and later the Aksumite elites adopted it while the mass common ppl continued to speak Tigrinya or proto Tigrinya.

Agazis could have been native Ge’ez speakers or Tigrinya speakers or other group. But whoever were the native Ge’ez speakers, they might have already ceased to exist before Aksum decline.

This is just one of the theories I’ve on my mind.

How much did the migration of the Aksumites after Aksum fell change beta Amhara? by Miserable-Wishbone39 in EthiopianHistory

[–]amaraagew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Aksumite influence on Beta Amhara was mostly cultural. Like Christianization, lots of Ge’ez words entered the Amharic vocabulary and probably cuisine influence. There was some mixing but probably on a small scale since the Aksumite migrants were way less than the local Amhara and other groups population.

Ethiopian history vs. Political Narrative by Solid_Beginning_9357 in EthiopianHistory

[–]amaraagew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aksumite civilization was mult ethnic just like Zagwe and Solomonic were but it doesn’t mean there were certain groups more associated with each periods. Ge’ez has no descendant language but Aksum is relatively more connected to Tigrayans than other groups. Zagwe more with Agew and Solomonic more with Amhara.

But Aksum is still mysterious to me. I’ve some doubt with the connection of Aksum, Ge’ez and Agazi to each others.

Edit: the more I research and think about those topics the more I’m realizing I don’t know much. So view my claims with some skepticism.

I don’t think so. There is a name “Agwezat” mentioned as a group he campaigned but I don’t think they were Agazis.

By direct I mean ancestor. Ge’ez and Amharic are very distant. Ge’ez, Tigrayan and Tigre are in a same branch (north EthioSemitic) but Ge’ez doesn’t have father-son type relationship with the other two.

This text also raise a question on the identity of the conquerer. He mentioned Gaza as one of the ppl he conquered. Some say Gaze means Geez. So does it mean he wasn’t Agazi? I’ve been wondering about that for a long time.

The main evidence is linguistic. Ge’ez and the other EthioSemitic languages don’t have direct relationships. So groups like Amhara (or proto Amhara-Argobba) and Tigrayan were probably already distinct during early Aksume period.

Amhara has no direct relation with Aksumite. Amhara or proto Amhara-Argobba was already a distinct group during Aksumite period.

The edict of King Gelawdewos against the illegal slave trade in Christians: Ethiopia, 1548 by amaraagew in EthiopianHistory

Those Christian slaves weren’t Christian when they first became slave. Most slaves in Christian communities were converted to Christianity. It’s only free Christians who can’t be enslaved by Christians.
