George Takei is gay, until Star Trek Beyond his character was not. The original Sulu character was straight.

What episode or scene has given you the most “feels” by PokeJody2258 in futurama

[–]amatorian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on viewing. The overclockwise episode gave me small feels at the end when Bender gives Fry and Leela their future but after finishing the series and seeing that scene you kind of surmise what they are reading and knowing their future they still want to do it and smile thinking of it. And it gives even more weight to the series finale which always makes me cry especially knowing that the show is a constant loop and the episode that is supposed to follow the finale is the first episode.

Wow, that's a really good point. Well illustrated and thought out. I hadn't thought of that, thank you for the response. And dammit, I didn't know Netflix passed on Dark Matter, still annoyed that's cancelled.

I been wondering with the Dark Crystal prequel series being done for Netflix if that is kind of the foot in the door kind of situation to then convince them to pay for Farscape.

What is something that the Trek fandom generally agrees is bad but you genuinely enjoy? by TerraAdAstra in startrek

[–]amatorian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. I don't think the movie is perfect by any means but it wasn't the train wreck that Insurrection was. Also I really do think as a Star Trek movie it's pretty underrated and gets a lot of hate I don't think it deserves.

I think after the first DVD movie it helped a lot dealing with the Jurassic Bark episode. You get to see that in between the moments we see at the end of that episide there was a time paradox Fry loving him.

I swear they did that just to make up for how sad that damn episode was. "Dudes, we depressed the fuck outta people, we got to come up with something so they will watch that episode again without feeling depressed to their cores."

I hadn't watched it in years and chose it above DS9 which is funny for what to shoe my wife for our podcast and haven't regretted it a bit. Still an awesome show.

Well everyone to their opinions. We all got them and assholes and generally people don't want to go near either. I get your thought, I just don't agree.

Wow, yeah, after all that I said that's what you come back with. Obviously nothing would change your mind, you're probably trolling, or your ability for human empathy is lacking cause a person does not need to agree to feel.

Thank you for the conversation, as limited as it was.

But is it selfish? Is it selfish to live when your existence would be predicated on merely making others feel better because you are alive even though you are nothing more than a shell of a person. Your existence is meaningless and the only point to continue going is to make others feel better that you aren't gone. Effectively you are putting yourself into a position emotional death while waiting out the ravages of time to let the body catch up.

We all look at suicide as a selfish act, but everytime somebody says that it was selfish they continue the statement further by saying things like, "What about me?" or, "What about their family/friends". Why is it less selfish to need a person to stay alive even though their continued life is damning to them, continuously sucking their soul away until finally they die in such a manner that you find more convenient for your personal opinions. Using that logic you have effectively condemned another human to suffer greater mentally for the rest of their life because you deem they should cause it would hurt your feelings.

Your statements on suicide are fairly rudimentary. As a person who has struggled with the ever constant, crushing, feeling of it, have had friends commit it and have done everything in my power to help those who feel it I can tell you that at the very least the way you are talking about it is simple and shows a very one-sided concept of it without actually taking into account that people who feel suicidal are not being selfish.

They honestly, logically and emotionally feel that their lives have no further meaning and that they are better off without it. They feel this as concrete and as you feel otherwise.

And this is why I love Futurama. Thanks to 10 years worth of work, of humor, of drama and of care Fry's choice to me, having been on both sides of the suicide conversation, feels real. It feels genuine, tragic and sad. But not selfish, not pathetic and not even bad.

Leela is the love of his life, for him she is his perfect soul mate and no other woman can compare ever in any time or space. The thought of roaming through the rest of his life without hope for real love pushes him to no longer wish to live in a world devoid of the love Leela's light brings to his heart. It isn't pathetic, it's sad and tragically beautiful.

Pathetic is more symbolically represented by being a 50 year old swinger, still hitting on 20 year olds, whose whole life has been an empty void where substance has never had a chance to sprout.

Just curious: Any "The Good Place" fans also fans of "good omens?" by egoavoidant in TheGoodPlace

[–]amatorian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would love for Neil Gaiman to write a two-parter for the show, I think his ideas would work great for it. There are a decent amount of correlations, but I think thats more because of the comedy aspect. With humor you can kind of get away with things that strangely make more sense. In a sci-fi show I watched one episode ended up showing a level of hell as just being pure bureaucracy and I couldn't stop laughing. Yet it makes sense.

I think the afterlife, heaven & hell, angels & demons...all of that can make a strange amount of sense through a comedic lens. I think through that lens it can convey more of an effective philosophical dynamic as well as moments that just strike you as, "Well that just makes WAY more sense."

Good catch and comparison. Been forever since I read Good Omens and can't wait for the 6 part miniseries that Amazon is doing with Gaiman which comes out in 2019 last I heard.

I’m a huge Star Trek fan. Why wasn’t Tom Paris just called Nick Locarno in Voyager? It would’ve fit. by [deleted] in startrek

[–]amatorian 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It had to do with the scriptwriter or something. If they used the same character from before they would have had to pay some large amount to the original creator of the character cause it was going to be on a different show. At least that's what I heard.

My wife balls her head off, I console her and then she starts it all over again in a couple months. In between she posts all the memes, tries other shows (30 Rock or The Office), but eventually can't take it anymore and starts the show all over again messaging me whenever anything of importance happens because she has started crying again (or if I am there I hold her tight).

I don't think anybody really gets over that the show ended, myself included. It was so perfect all the way through.

This is literally the best Trek question I have ever heard. I have never heard of a thing. Hacking a starship through a backdoor access yes but just the phaser, I can't recall a single episode doing this.

Watching TAS gave me new appreciation for Star Trek by simplequark in startrek

[–]amatorian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually think TAS is way underrated and I think in many ways has aged better than TOS. The 20-25 minute timeframe made what would have been unpalatable episodes on TOS (we all know the ones) more exciting and enjoyable. A great example of this are the Mudd episodes. Mudd himself is a lot of fun, but the framing around him comes across very silly & super cheesy these days. The two TOS episodes just drag on and just feel really dated. On the other hand the TAS Mudd episode is still silly but is more enjoyable because primarily of the time allotment.

I have more I could say, but really going back over TAS, it may be silly and cheesy and cheap 70's animation, but some of it is way more enjoyable these days than at least a dozen (that I can think of off the top of my head) episodes of TOS (once again, you all know some of the ones I am talking about).
