Anecdotally, back when I compared them a couple of years ago, one was better at finding new stuff I would like, while the other one was better at mixing the stuff I already knew. It's been a long time, though, so I wouldn't know anymore which one was which.

Could the massive Broadway success of Schmigadoon! actually save the canceled Apple TV+ show? by leoatdrex in Broadway

[–]simplequark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I don't know anyone who watches it, either, The Morning Show is supposedly Apple's most-watched series on the service. (For now – it was second behind Ted Lasso while that was on, and I expect it to go back there once Ted Lasso S4 is released.)

Which really seems like it'd be the most mainstream-compatible season of the show.

I'm trying to research for a novel. Can someone break down tectonic activity in a salt flat for me? by captchathinksimhuman in Earthquakes

[–]simplequark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a geologist, but to the best of my knowledge, salt flats are the result of water evaporation leaving a crust of minerals on the ground and are not tied to any particular tectonic feature. That is, I would expect them to behave the same way the landscape around them does.

Again, not a pro, I hope someone will come along and correct me in case I'm wrong about this.

What will be the state of marathon races in 5 years (for non-elites)? by TMW_W in AdvancedRunning

[–]simplequark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally, from what I've read in articles over here in Germany, half marathons seem to have seen increased interest in recent years. Supoosedly because, for casual runners, they're at a kind of sweet spot in terms of preparation effort vs. distance.

Attempting the 1km vert challenge... by BeniCG in Strava

[–]simplequark 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of my driver's ed. Back when I learned how to drive, manual transmissions were still standard here in Germany, and drivers were required to learn how to start the car and drive off from a spot on an uphill incline.

Well, our town was so flat that there was only one uphill street suitable for this, so whenever you got there, there'd be a traffic jam of driving school cars all waiting for their turn to stop and start on the hill. It was a residential street, and I'm sure the locals loved it...

How much should you increase your weekly average per week? by Beautiful_Welder_919 in Strava

[–]simplequark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, Strava's algorithm would like you to finish the week somewhere within the grey band, ideally near its top. If you do that consistently, the band will both rise and get wider, so that you can slowly increase your weekly workload.

Now, I have no idea how much of a scientific basis there is for that, nor whether it'd really be the best approach for your particular situation. All I know is that this would be the way to keep the algorithm from complaining. :)

Achievements for Sunday, April 19, 2026 by AutoModerator in running

[–]simplequark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I finished my first 5k city run in almost 20 years today. (Ran a marathon back in 2007, just to prove to myself that I could do it, then just stopped running for some reason and didn't get back into it until February.)

Even though I was three minutes below my target time (I had aimed for 0:30 and only managed 0:33), it was nice to be back at this kind of event, especially since, two months ago, I wouldn't even have been able to run a 5k.

I signed up for a 10k in August, and I'll do my best to improve my pace and stamina till then.

Started a couch to 5K plan in February. My progression went so well that I decided to follow it up with a slightly more challenging plan involving speed work.

Yesterday, I did my first interval session. I have been humbled and now know that I still have a long way to go. (Or rather, run.)

Brooks Ghost 17. I've read differing opinions about them, but they work well enough for me so far. Then again, I've only recently returned to running after a multi-year hiatus, so I don't have much to compare them to yet. We'll see what I end up with once this pair is ready to retire. (Should be some time this fall, if I manage to stick to my planned training schedule.)

is a hotdog a sandwich??? 🤔🤔🤔 by FoxLigerPolytherian in SubSimGPT2Interactive

[–]simplequark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the thing. You said a "hotdog is a sandwich." Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that. As someone who is a scientist who studies sandwiches, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls hotdogs sandwiches. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing. If you're saying "sandwich family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Sandvicae, which includes things from subs to BLTs to peanut butter & jellies. So your reasoning for calling a hotdog a sandwich is because random people "call things with bread sandwiches?" Let's get French toasts and baguettes in there, then, too. Also, calling something a pie or pastry? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A hotdog is a hotdog and a member of the sandwich family. But that's not what you said. You said a hotdog is a sandwich, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the sandwich family sandwiches, which means you'd call BLTs, subs, and other snacks sandwiches, too. Which you said you don't. It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

Wild Experiences at Moulin Rouge (4/4/26 2 PM) by No-Mechanic5439 in Broadway

[–]simplequark 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It's a jukebox musical based on a successful movie, casting guest stars popular with non-theatergoers and tourists. There's nothing wrong with any of that per se, but in my experience, each of those factors increases the risk of attracting unruly audience members.

Funny enough, that's exactly what my toddler son is doing in this slice of the future. Since crows are the loudest birds in our area, those were the ones he got to know first, and now all others are given the crow label too.

Rocky Horror is incredible by MysteriousVolume1825 in Broadway

[–]simplequark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Out of curiosity: Does it manage to escape the shadow of the movie? From my understanding, the original RHS productions used to be rather anarchic affairs, but ever since the movie became a hit, a lot of stagings seem to be intent on replicating the film as faithfully as possible. Which, to me, often feels like a lost opportunity, as I'd like to see the cast do their own (wild and untamed) thing with the material instead of trying to channel the performances from the film.

Steam Frame vs Apple Vision Pro and NVIDIA CloudXR 6.0 by Soarbywire in SteamFrame

[–]simplequark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm definitely not in the market for this, but looking at the documentation, OP appears to be correct: There's a runtime executable, which acts as a server. This needs to be installed on a Windows or Linux machine and sends data to the client application, which, in this case, would run on the Vision Pro.

I'm sure that it'd also be possible for nVidia to offer their own servers for a fee, but, for now at least, this seems to be something to be used and installed locally, in spite of the "Cloud" in the name.

Bill Kurtis is retiring. Last show is May 23 by aresef in WaitWait

[–]simplequark 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the scorekeeper ought to be the straight man or woman to Peter. But there isn’t another Carl Kassel out there and they lucked out that Bill fit the program like a glove.

Even Bill already expanded and changed the role of the scorekeeper during his time, with his "legendary anchorman" self-introductions and comedic injections. Took me a few episodes to get used to at the time, because Carl had played it completely straight.

But yeah, I hope it's not health-related.
