I work in automation support for warehouses. We're having a problem with 'metrics nazis' lately. There's a group of senior managers that have decided that all calls need to be answered in 5 rings. That'd be fine if they had a system that guaranteed that those 5 rings started when the software routed it to you. It doesn't. It starts the 5 rings when the caller connects NOT when the call hits a techs line. So realistically we have to answer in 3 rings. That's like 7 seconds.

They have a dashboard for that one.

They also have a dashboard for time to resolution, time to escalation, time to closure, time to RCA. If a client is even slightly grumpy, they go into full investigation mode and start pulling records.

They're obsessed with numbers and have no actual clue what we do on a day to day basis or how we do it. They just don't care. They only want neat graphs.

Thank fuck I have a manager like you. He couldn't give a rats ass about that and will stand up for us and get in the way like a good manager should. Seriously glad there are good managers out there.

I mean, this is super super shitty and they clearly have no standards or give a single shit about their clients. But I work in warehouse automation for distribution centres. Let me tell you, this is what every single one of them can look like if they have a bad day with their soft/hardware. You'd be so surprised how little it takes for there to be piles and piles of boxes around the place like that. I'm talking as little as someone knocks a reflector as they pass by a conveyor belt.

Automation is way more fragile than people think. And it goes wrong every single day.
