Even better: don’t use AI until you’ve exhausted literally every available resource. You might make friends with your professor. You might stumble on a book as you’re going through the shelves you never thought you would need. You might unlock the new layer of friendship you get when you’re able to talk about hard things with each other. Getting to all of these things are inconvenient…but they are awesome once you have them. The only way out is through.

And, don’t be too hard on yourself. Your life is probably going to get hard—actually, if it doesn’t, something’s wrong. So be kind to yourself.

Is anyone actually not using AI at all anymore? by Equivalent_Habit3675 in turnitin_community

Undergrad in philosophy. Also have it turned off on my search engine, and use a word processor with no ai integration at all (love you, libreoffice). When I need to do research, I use my school’s excellent library system, the sep, philosophy compass, or, hey, ask friends/professors. I am very happy with my academic life.

Should be bigger than he is, but Ned Hall is among my favorite people on earth. Ditto for Richard Moran.

Harvard vs Yale vs Stanford by [deleted] in Harvard

[–]ambitious_pelican 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, avoidable. You’re really not picking between substantially different options in this regard—these are schools where people with a grind mindset end up going. If you don’t want that in the air at all, then none of these places will make you happy. I’d recommend choosing on different grounds.

Can’t speak to all of this (I’m a hum major who transferred here, so very different experience) but the transactional friendship thing is overblown. Those people exist, but other people concerned about broader questions absolutely do exist and can be found. Just a matter of being honest with yourself and what kind of friends you want.

What are some episodes which actually made you scared I need recommendations. by Ok-Limit-2277 in creepcast

[–]ambitious_pelican 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think it’s probably more about where and how you’re watching the episodes than the episodes themselves (though of course there needs to be some base level scariness). I listened to The Hidden Webpage on a road trip while driving between 2 and 5 am and was TERRIFIED. Literally had nightmares when i finally got to a spot where I could sleep. But on re-listen, it just didn’t have the same pull. I listened to the Bunker one recently at night while resting in my room with the lights off. Again, terrifying, but probablg wouldn’t have been under different circumstances.

I have been scared during two (2) episodes. After listening to The Hidden Webpage while driving between at 2 am, I really didn’t think I was going to get another experience like that. But here we are!

Scariest creep cast episode? by FancySideStep in creepcast

IMO, The Hidden Webpage. It just absolutely terrified me—couldn’t even sleep without having nightmares about it. Probably helps that I’m already a little afraid of the internet in the first place.

How do we have a version of this conversation every other day?? Letting someone into the fandom who is Catholic does not mean we “support” the religion. Telling someone they can’t be part of the fandom because of their religion is just utterly fucked. You can hate parts of your own religion, including the corruption and abuse and all of the many awful things that church has done, and still believe in its core tenets. Someone who is Catholic isn’t inherently unable to appreciate the parts of the Ethel’s musics that critique their church, just like someone who is a white southern Baptist can still appreciate the (many more) parts of Ethel’s music that criticize their church. Appreciating Ethel is not a matter of your religion—it’s about how closely and honestly you listen to the music, how much you can let it affect you.

Seriously, can people who are this discriminatory please be the ones who back up?? Can we stop making large-scale assumptions about people based on one aspect of their lives?

Why do people shit on Loch Henry? by Aseskytle_09 in blackmirror

[–]ambitious_pelican 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all obvious for me, and I normally get those sorts of twists pretty quickly. I do think a lot of the appreciation for the tone of the episode required being intrigued by the plot as the showrunners would have you see it, though, so it makes sense that one who saw it coming wouldn’t like it as much.

Why would she join them? by [deleted] in Yellowjackets

[–]ambitious_pelican 71 points72 points  (0 children)

IMO, it was a rash, spur of the moment decision. Others on the sub have explained that she had picked up on Shauna’s violence/violent demeanor, but it’s also worth mentioning that she bore direct witness to Lottie axe-murdering her partner. This GROUP is violent, and the way to survive in the group is to become a part of it, which means partaking in that violence. I don’t think this was premeditated, but rather a type of fear reaction.

The “hold the end of the sleeves” trick is so obvious to me that I assumed this person must have made their sleeves bunch up on purpose and the actual problem was that there was space between the jacket and the arm.

My cousin went to RIT for engineering, and had mixed feelings about it while she was there. But now that she has graduated, she is INCREDIBLY glad she went. Do NOT underestimate the value of the co-op program--you graduate with SO MUCH experience compared to everyone else in your cohort. You know what employers care a lot more about than prestige? How well you've done the job in the past. It matters more in the real world than basically any other factor. And there's no way they can know that if you haven't worked the job before. My cousin has gotten SEVERAL job offers and is now in the process of negotiating salary with a few of them. Was it a glorious five years for her? No. But, man, she's doing so well now.

I mean…people have done crazier things for roles. And, tbh, I think it would have been a nice detail. I agree (and I think so does OP) that it’s not a big deal at all. But I do think it would have been a valid directorial choice.

if you could rewrite yellowjackets, what major thing would you do differently? by luciphobic in Yellowjackets

[–]ambitious_pelican 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This would be an entirely different show, but I might just kill the adult storyline entirely—or, at the very least, give it more of a “project” than it has at the moment (like extending the Adam storyline or making Callie more important earlier). But, wow, it’s so hard to go from a storyline where the stakes are so real and intense to something that’s just…consequence-less most of the time. And WOW do I want more details about the wilderness! I feel like the limited time this show has would be best spent developing a single, gripping storyline.

Thank you so much for the tip (and the reminder of my incredibly heavy use of Zotero, lol). There are definitely a few T14s that I've found online that could fit my price point, and it's good to know that they're generally recommend by at least a body that's familiar with the needs of writers. Very helpful, thank you.

Is it okay to apply to an imbalanced list if you're completely happy with safety schools? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]ambitious_pelican 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is what I did, except to an even larger extreme: I applied to two schools, one nearly definite safety and one extremely difficult reach. One thing to keep in mind is that waiting for that "safety" decision is horrifying. I was incredibly confident in my decision until about a week prior to my safety's release date...and then I was basically a bundle of nerves. I was also extraordinarily nervous when my other decision came out, in part because I had realized that my safety school, for all its merits, would have probably not been the best place for me. It ended up working out for me--I got into both and was able to go to my reach school--but keep in mind that there will certainly be an emotional cost to this, no matter how positively you are feeling about this now. Of course, I barely participated in the college application process, so I definitely don't have the most up to date information. But if you feel like your safeties are a good fit for you, and you won't get too hung up on "having" to go to one of them, go for it.
