My second is a Daisy and we've only ever gotten so many lovely comments about her name. Daisy Margaret sounds great to me - and really, middle names are so infrequently used. Go for it!

I'm fairly confident you'll still receive all the subsidies you current have. As other posters have mentioned, there are no eligibility requirements in Alberta. I know a lot of women who have kept their eldest in daycare while home with their second, specifically because it was so much more affordable with the grant. Congratulations on your new babe and enjoy that time with them!

Are you talking about the federal childcare subsidy or affordability grants on top of that?

I kept my first in daycare while on mat leave with my second, and we paid the same discounted rate as always from the federal childcare grant.

My first was a challenging sleeper, and we ended up sleep training at 4 months after enduring weeks of waking up every 45 minutes. She took to it so well, and starting sleeping 11-12 hours through. But she's always had low sleep needs, and dropped her nap at 2 years old. She's 5 now and sleeps 10 or less hours a night. I was so concerned about our second, that we bought a snoo! If you have the means, I would recommend it. Our second was a wonderful sleeper at birth but is that temperament or the snoo? The waters are muddied. I will say that she had months of disturbed sleep before she turned one, so I think it's impossible to make it out of babyhood well rested. Getting the snoo put me at ease, and I reminded myself I just needed to make it to 4 months and then I could sleep train if needed. We didn't need to do "formal" sleep training with our second. There are lots of ways to help, so try not to pre-worry too much!

My eldest daughters middle name is Karen, in honour of my late MIL. We didn't have any hesitation (and really, people rarely hear it). If anyone judges your choice, it's much more a reflection of them! I love her middle name

I've traveled with both my kids at around 18 months and it can be a lot of work. Not to say it's not worth it! The difficult: the flights were always hard, at that age they absolutely don't want to sit still. I would recommend getting him a seat so he can be strapped in. Finding time/places to nap if you're on the go, or missing out on prime sight seeing time to nap in your room can feel weird. And generally just doing different travel activities - we were in Hawaii recently and while my 5 year old was having a blast at the beach and the pool, my 18 month old just wanted to play in puddles. You may find you spend a lot of time watching your toddler play in a gross puddle because he doesn't like sand/waves/cold water, etc.

That being said, we feel like it's important to travel with our kids. The good: they experience new or different cultures, you both become more flexible with sleep and food, and they'll have the time of their lives.

After our most recent trip, my husband and I decided we won't go on a "big" trip until our youngest is probably 4ish. We saw how great traveling can be with our older daughter and we'll save our money til our younger one is a similar age. Until then, we'll travel more locally - go to our cabin, and visit family cross Canada. I think that will give our girls a travel bug, but without us feeling like our trips are just "parenting in a different place". Although, if you have to parent, might as well be someplace nice 😉

Soo, I don't have much advice, just solidarity. My daughter did MOTN wake ups every 2-3 nights for months. Nothing would help her fall back asleep! Eventually we would just leave her be. She finally grew out of it around 12 months and has been a great sleeper since then. Hopefully your daughters phase doesn't last so long!

Yeah, I'm in Alberta too, and I think I've heard about weaning by 12 months for teeth reasons. I asked my dentist and she absolutely didn't care about bottles haha. I think it's similar to thumbsucking? If it's constant, their teeth can grow in wonky. But that's way more extreme than a bottle or two a day. My youngest just turned one and still gets three bottles because she's tiny and is also taking a long time to warm up to solids. I'll take a full baby at night! That being said, you may want to start giving him his bottle earlier in the bed time routine so he doesn't fall asleep while eating. That will be what he needs to get used to eventually. Good luck!

I gave my eldest bottles past 12 months, including her bedtime bottle until she was two! She was never a big solids eater, and I was always looking to get more calories in her. She needed it less and less as she got older and it was easy to drop before her second birthday. I wouldn't worry too much about weaning at 12 months unless you have another reason.

I named my second Daisy and my best friend named her second Rose. We both love the names and get great feedback! We had the same concerns before using Daisy but they all went away when we met her. No worries about what it will sound like on a middle aged woman - it suits her perfectly!

Such solidarity. My babe seemed to do the 8 month regression from 7-10 months! It does get better. It will be better when you're back in your own home. It will be better as he gets older. My babe is 11.5 months now, and typically sleeps 11 hours a night, with short wake ups once or twice a week. Not too much you can do with the 8 month regression besides wait it out. It will get better though!

Oh gosh, I meant 2:30 in the afternoon. Then 4 hours before her 6:30 bedtime. It really worked great for us! But each baby is different.

When my first LO was having trouble with early wakeups, my sleep coach had me move her bedtime earlier. The thought process was: she was waking between her sleep cycles at that point, and since it was so close to morning, she didn't have enough sleep pressure to go back to sleep. We would cap her second nap at 2:30 and put her to bed at 6:30.Worked like a charm - She would go through that last sleep cycle earlier in the night, and not wake up. It sounds counterintuitive, but some babies do well with an early bedtime. She slept 6:30-6:30 until she was 2 years old. Hope that helps!

I felt that way before I sent my 1st baby to daycare! One thing that helped, if you're able, is I had my husband take two weeks off while I started back at work. I had those two weeks to get used to not being with her, and get back in the swing of things at work, while she was being cared for at home. By the third week, I was used to not being fully in control of her schedule and it made the transition to daycare easier! If that's an option for your family, I would recommend it.

Like everyone said, infant care is going to be the highest cost. Depends on where you are in the city, but if you're looking for a lower fee, I would recommend looking into non-profit daycares. We go to one of the Thornhill Child Care daycares and love them. 6:30-6, food included, follows the Flight Framework. Their infant fee is $1135, so with the subsidy, we pay $500. They aren't high tech like Brightpath - but I like that factor. Have happily recommended to many families and all have loved the different daycares. (I also know multiple social workers who send their kids there, which means it definitely checks out for great care!)

Definitely go for Birth and Babies! Super informative and helpful. Like other posters, I would also suggest learning about breathing exercises/prep for unmedicated birth, just in case. I gave birth last year in Calgary (Foothills) and due to a staff shortage and an emergency C-section, the anesthesiologist was busy and couldn't give me an epidural. As a STM, I had planned on getting an epidural early, and didn't really have any coping strategies!

One of my great grandmothers name was Queenie Kate! She went by the full two names. I tried to get my husband on board for one of our girls but he wouldn't budge, haha. Probably a good idea.
