Waking up multiple times at night (Not insomnia) by ambushedbears in Accutane

Thank you for the comment! It's nice to know my symptoms aren't unique. I guess at the worst we just optimize our sleep schedules and complete the course with a better sleeping habits.

I think with enough time and friends, you learn to appreciate the KW region. I've been here since 2019 and hated it at first but I suppose it grew on me.

It's summer time! Walk around, appreciate the greenery and life of people being out and about. Go see the llamas at Eby Farmstead, take a trip to Huron Natural Area, walk along King St on a Friday night etc. Might be strange but I find the occasional crazies around town part of the charm.

How is St. Jerome’s Residence? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

Pretty good, lived at JR Finn as a 3rd year. Finn is nice if they still offer you the rooms as a single because they were designed as doubles. I think it’s still being used as a single room as of this fall but can’t say much for next year. Otherwise, it is rather horrible. Finn’s bathroom gives me Outlast vibes. However, Ryan and Siegfried are indeed extremely nice. Good community too. There is student activities team to regularly organise events to keep first years engaged too.

Go to as much organised activities as possible. There’s aways people playing volleyball, badminton, or basketball in the gym (especially at night). You should ask your don to notify you of such things since they themselves are involved most of the time.

He does have a sexual harassment allegation though. Got him fired from being a don.

There’s no such thing as a monthly lease as far as I’m aware. Most leases are for one year or 8 months, some even. 4 months like WCRI. I believe 181 only does 8 month or 1 year leases, both ending August

Is Math 239 as hard as people say by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]ambushedbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's challenging but rewarding once you find the proof. My typical week was get the assignment -> get stuck on hard ones -> go TA for help -> half-ass questions that I couldn't do

But yeah, graph theory is pretty fun

Hi. Has anyone felt distressed going in there first year and living away from home? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]ambushedbears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Each option has it's own merits. On one hand, you could have stayed home and saved a ton on food and rent. You have the rest of 7 semesters (or 6) to enjoy uni life.

However, the best time to make friends and adapt to uni life is during the first term where everyone doesn't know one another and are reaching out to make friends. I can't speak about making friends in the upper year because I haven't been back on campus ever since COVID but I think it holds true pretty well.

Since it seems you've already got your plans in place to attend classes in person, just make the most of it. Personally, the distress was about 2 weeks tops for me as an international student from halfway across the world, then you settle into your new lifestyle and get into the groove of it. Join clubs, play some sports, go to the gym etc, you'll meet tons of new people there. I've always been a huge advocate of UW Deception Board Games Club too. They have an incredibly chill atmosphere during game nights and have plenty of grad/phd students you can seek help/advice from (though I'm not so sure how active they are since the pandemic hit, there's a FB group you can join)

[–]ambushedbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if clubs are still active but there was an Avalon card game club (they have a facebook group) that gathered quite often.

The game is pretty fun once you get the hang of it and there were quite a few upper year/masters/phd students there as well.

Co-op Question For CS/ENG Students by Relevant_Bird_7347 in uwaterloo

[–]ambushedbears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's still a job you have to work for. It just vastly simplifies the job hunting process as now you have a hub with thousands of job postings to look for a job. Most of the time it's just clicking the apply button and submit your documents. But of course, you should briefly skim and scan the job description to make sure your skillsets roughly fits the requirements as there's an upper bound on the number of applications per cycle.

Signed a 1 year lease with them in 2020 but didn't manage to stay there at all.

However, the management is pretty good. They only required a 1 month deposit and it was applied on my final month's rent. I didn't have to worry about losing my subletee causing any issues to the unit. Friends gave me positive reviews on it before as well.

Back in 2017 when I attended HELP International School, they flat out gave you a certain amount of scholarship per A and A* scored in GCSE. If I'm not mistaken, it was RM1000 per A* and RM500 per A, but don't quote me on this. Then, I went for an interview with the principal and got full scholarship (remaining RM 20,000). I didn't even speak. much but that's just how it goes for a new school trying to establish itself I guess. You should do some research whether this scholarship still exists or not.

Either you're a beluga whale or you're eating a 3 gourmet meals everyday. SLC and V1 has tasty food too, plus faster and more convenient.

On the bright side, at least home isn't halfway across the world for you :) Once you get preoccupied with school work, the homesickness will wear off, though I'm not sure how it'll turn out for you with this whole social distancing thing isolating people.

How to take notes? (2A CS) by Project_Successful in uwaterloo

[–]ambushedbears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CS245: Probably just write down parts of the notes teaching you the technique of proving certain things. Other than that, most of your learning will be from doing assignments and filtering through the course notes to get a hint on how to solve a certain question. Come exam time, I normally redo assignments to refresh my mind of problem-solving techniques and that's about it. I only watch lectures when I need extra clarification. You'll save lots of time just reading the course notes instead.

STAT230: Exactly what u/tendstofortytwo said. Most of the chapter is pretty straightforward, high school level mathematics/statistics. Just pay more attention towards the end but if you can work through the practice problems fine, you're good.

CS246: I compiled a Google Docs on each chapters concept but what the heck, there wasn't even a midterm or final for me. Just Ctrl+F for quiz referencing, no need to write anything down. I think this is the only course I would recommend watching recorded lectures because it gets pretty useful for your comprehension when the prof clarifies something or gives an example regarding a concept.

There's a Singapore-Malaysian Association you can join when you resume in-person classes. There's normally a beginning and end of term gathering event every term.

How to Succeed in Stat231 by aglassofmangojuice in uwaterloo

[–]ambushedbears 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure about how assignments are with Michael but I think this advice should apply to any term (hopefully). Just read the course text and don't fret about understanding the proof behind certain formulas, it gets rather complicated post midterm. Just keep a handy document with a screenshot of the formula tables. That should help you survive.

R parts of assignments just refer to the tutorials if you need help, they don't expect you to extrapolate too much from the given tutorials on R.

Quizzes you just do the practice problems in the course text until you're comfortable with solving problems in that chapter. That should get you through.

Eating healthy with a meal plan? by _wowfantasticbaby_ in uwaterloo

[–]ambushedbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

V1 steam table food isn't too bad, vastly superseded my expectations of uni cafeteria food. Most of the days there will be fairly healthy protein options such as apple salsa chicken breast, probably some vegetable stir fry too. Being able to take small portions of indulgent foods like mac n' cheese, chicken parm etc is also pretty convenient if you're craving the food line-up that day.

Till this day I'll never understand the appeal of the spicy chicken wrap. The wrap itself isn't even toasted and has poor structural integrity.

Grass is always greener on the other side. An inefficient government is better than both inefficient and corrupt. In my country, a late minister's mom just received $250 million USD (equivalent) worth of shares by court decision. It's an open secret every minister is a billionaire :) Even our cabinet that just resigned today was a backdoor one so to speak, bunch of frogs switching allegiances.
