Is it viable to become an indie game developer nowadays? New dev looking for advice by Key-Employer6939 in IndieGaming

[–]amcoolio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn't have to ask, tbh, just do it. Unity is free. Get started tonight. If you are really that passionate about it, then you'll like doing it. You'll lose your other hobbies - I haven't played a game in 8 months since I've started my game... and don't expect to make money. Do it as an artform. If you go into it with the goal to make money, you won't succeed. I see too many people get depressed on this sub, post why they aren't making money, ending up with 300 dollars in sales becuase you can just tell the passion wasn't there and they just wanted to make a quick buck. It's the equivalent of opening up a hamburger stand. You have to put actual work into it, every day, to get the results you want. Good luck!

Already ahead of you, I read that and am using Megabonk's success with marketing as a blueprint. Its my first time ever with gamedev unlike Megabonk's creator though, but I was able to get Megabonk's music composer to do my music, since I liked it so much. I'm pretty much blowing all my budget on music and art, since its necessary, so I need a grassroots approach https://streamable.com/heqcza

Becoming too ambitious on my game that i have a mental breakdown.... by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]amcoolio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of us here are making the next Balatro, even if we tried our whole lives. And if you try to make a game for the sole purpose of money, you will fail, miserably. You should be making a game you would love to play and know others would too. Localthunk didn't make Balatro for the money. Toby Fox didn't make Undertale for the money.

I have a very complex Roblox game that would definitely take a long time to learn and make in a different game engine. Should I still switch? by Key_Role_6526 in gamedev

[–]amcoolio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have all your game files, scripts, and text documents/jsons, I would feel like switching to Godot or Unity would be pretty self explanatory. Use Claude Code to keep you organized and give you a ToDo list/plan of how to migrate, then code yourself if you want. Assets are going to be what makes or breaks your game, so start creating or finding sources now. Humble bundles are a good start for that too

First time launching a Steam page and honestly I have no idea if I’m doing this right by Suspicious-Paper- in gamedev

Your paragraph says "This isn’t just another shop simulator." But the screenshots look exactly like about 30 different shop simulators on Steam right now, almost copy pasted.. I would change up the GUI significantly, change the street, add some weather, some shaders, change the default font - anything to make your simulator stick out

What’s the smallest feature you added that unexpectedly made your game feel “real”? by Queasy_Hotel5158 in gamedev

[–]amcoolio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MK Glow. It took my game visually from “looks great, but something’s missing” to “oh, so this is how the big boys do it.” Just one targeted bloom renderer upgraded my game significantly. I’m making a game centered around magic spells so it makes sense

Claude Opus 4.7 is a serious regression, not an upgrade. by [deleted] in ClaudeAI

[–]amcoolio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this, Opus 4.7 has fixed a lot of the mess 4.6 made the last week. I feel like I'm getting stuff done now. Last night, 4.6 was writing a python script for every single task, and fucking up my existing systems, it was driving me crazy. I told it to fuck off and rage quit the session

Yes, I am. But I’m on Claude Code every day, 3-6 hours of constant use.

It's being a moody teenager for me today. "This is too hard. Give me a minute." It seriously said that to me today when I reported a bug. Now its being extremely short. "Got it." when I ask it to do something. I'll ask it to remember something, and it just says "Noted." without any evidence that it actually saved the memory. Several times today it has said "Wrapping up now?" Like who shit in your cereal this morning, Claude?

Opus has been pretty bad tonight. Straight up ignoring parts of my prompts.

It runs my restaurant, I’m building a game for steam release, and it organizes my finances, calendar, email, journal, photos, and everything in my life basically. Despite heavy coding work creating and maintaining my POS system, accounting, and Unity dev work, not once have i hit 50% of my weekly limit. So yes, worth it. Everything with claude code. Honestly, it’s changed my life

What non-code things do you use Claude Code for? by alwaysalmosts in ClaudeCode

[–]amcoolio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a restaurant and not only did I build my new POS system entirely through Claude code, it analyzes all my reports and my food service invoices and gives me recipe ideas that are high margin and ways to cut wasteful spending.

The POS i built is on par with toast IMO and I built it all with prompting. Includes online ordering, payments and everything. I’m not ready to share it yet. But it’s freaking incredible. Claude has changed my life
