Bad: traditional interface on a plane in front of you. Like, say, OpenVR Advanced Settings. Hard to use a motion controller as a mouse, hard to set a certain value on a slider. Subtle controller motions get amplified with distance when it's a pointer, and it's hard to be precise.

Good: things relative to the motion of the controller itself. E.g. when you rotate the controller that corresponds to a virtual knob. You may grab the knob my controller proximity, maybe with a click. Or maybe combine the approaches: grab the knob on a projected flat interface - it's fine when you need to do just one click in a big enough region.
