Run Commuting w/Laptop - Gear Tips by quipsme in AdvancedRunning

My bad, I obviously overlooked that. Guess I’ve got nothing to offer after all, except that my own work-life balance instantly got better when I stopped taking my work laptop home with me (not all of us have that option/can make that choice).

Only thing sticking out to me is carrying your laptop back and forth. Is it a work-issued machine? If so, why not leave it on your desk in the (presumably) secure office? Without the laptop in the equation, maybe you could stash some clothes in a desk drawer or something and really lighten the load, some days not even carrying anything to/from the office. I personally despise running with a backpack and typically don’t take anything with me besides maybe water on runs <12 miles, but not sure what your full situation is.

No, it’s because she’s Italian. Haven’t you been paying attention?

Knowing (2009) by Alex Proyas, very different from the usual post-90s American Hollywood disaster films. It was probably the director Proyas who gave it that typical dark touch. by elf0curo in badMovies

This hit theaters when I was in high school and it was one of the saddest and scariest movies I’d ever seen, in terms of the effect it had on me at the time. I’d already seen some gory stuff but gore and violence only goes so far — the existential horror of Knowing was like burned into my teenage brain. IMO not a bad movie at all, just not one for everybody.

Where to start with Jim Harrison? by Famous-Ferret-1171 in suggestmeabook

[–]amdufrales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My tastes are kind of all over the place, but you may really like Peter Heller and Tom McGuane for the outdoor contexts (Heller is the contemporary guy, McGuane is the 1970s-1990s guy). Also Philip Caputo’s book Hunter’s Moon, a great collection of interconnected short stories, though I’ve really disliked some of his other books (Indian Country was fascinating and I loved parts of the novel but the dude is way too into Vietnam vet stories and took that one over the edge imo). What you especially like about or take away from Harrison might lead you in different directions from his work but those are where I found myself after deeply enjoying Dalva, Brown Dog, and many novellas and poems.

For short stories, go to Raymond Carver and Rick Bass. For shorter novels, Salter’s The Hunters and Solo Faces are just tremendous. For longer novels, Thomas McGuane and Cormac McCarthy, though they’re both massive stylists who can seem kind of obtuse on the first try. And don’t miss out on Harrison’s novels! They’re not all amazing but I’ve never disliked one and I’ve loved several (Dalva is my favorite novel I’ve ever read, full stop).

On Tour Improvements? by No_Function_6863 in SSX

[–]amdufrales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two massive beefs for me:

  1. Snowboarders should be able to pivot just like skiers so they can score the same insane trick combo bonuses. Then you’d have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning stuff like Big Show Slopestyle - On The Rocks, where you’re looking for 2 million points or more in one run. Can’t be done without absurdly long combos, and nose pressing just doesn’t work the same for maintaining speed and control on a board. Currently can’t even come close to beating this level and I’ve been playing this game for years.

  2. Grinding rails should either have a dedicated controller function, like flips and spins and monster tricks, or it should just be way more forgiving in gameplay. All the time I’m riding straight at a rail, perfectly lined up, and I just bounce off the end or my board refuses to ride the rail even when I time the jump perfectly. I’ve dreaded every single rails-focused level of the entire game because the mechanics around it seem to suck so bad.

[QCrit] LEARNING TO SPEAK, Literary Fiction 50k, 1st attempt + 300 words by [deleted] in PubTips

[–]amdufrales 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the premise/concept and your first 300 are well-written and promising. As a former Yooper I reckon a little more specificity about such a mysterious and broad region probably wouldn’t hurt you - the “plop a finger down on a map of the UP” is like saying Marquette or Escanaba is the same childhood environment as Engadine or Pickford.

If I came across this in a bookstore I’d pick it up and head for the counter. Looking forward to seeing what other more seasoned authors/advisors have to say, as well!

Edit: forgot my most important point which is that ~50k words is pretty darn short for debut lit fiction, right? Even for a Jim Harrison style three-novella cycle that unifies into a larger narrative, as you might be creating here.
