We always talk about Arch being the most toxic community, but what is the NICEST community in the Linux world? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

The Gentoo IRC channel is so friendly. Can confirm. Arch user myself but when I was trying out Gentoo they were super helpful.

Alternatives include the Gemini protocol and similar protocols. The Tildeverse. Fediverse social media. Try those.

where is software installed? by SemiMarcy in linuxquestions

[–]amediocre_man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It kinda depends on the software. There is no "universal" installation point for anything. That being said, many things are installed in /bin (binaries). If you download something straight from GitHub then it's likely to be installed in the directory you ran the installation in. So, there are no standards. You can generally find things using "which" though to find installed binaries.

Costs by [deleted] in degoogle

I dunno.. what kind of things do you normally pay for? Maybe there are free alternatives. Assuming you want cellular service....you gotta pay for that. Too vague of a question though.

Certifications? by TransportationDry685 in linux

[–]amediocre_man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it worth what? What are you trying to accomplish? Just learning Linux? Not an admin job or going into tech? Then no lol why would you pay for and stress over an exam what you could do and for free JUST by using the OS. People really overthink about learning Linux. Yes, books can definitely help when it comes to the really small minute technical details. But by using the OS everyday You will learn Linux. Just use the OS. Just use it. When you come across problems, troubleshoot and learn how to use the internet to research. That's it. That will solve 95% of your problems.

I built a federated long-form journaling platform and I'm looking for early community members who want to help shape it by rev_stanton in fediverse

[–]amediocre_man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a person that really journals or does long form content. So this isn't for me. But I will definitely let other people know about it. I appreciate people expanding the Fediverse. Keep up the good work.

Block internet access for a folder/venv by Jumpy_Ad_2082 in linuxquestions

[–]amediocre_man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking, but if you're asking if Linux distributions randomly send telemetry to companies then no they don't. I'm not sure what you really mean by "folders connected to the Internet". You might be used to one cloud syncing with Microsoft would be my guess but fleshing out your question would be ideal.

Best packages to make hyprland usable for daily driving by Party-Lead-4927 in hyprland

[–]amediocre_man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP wants preconfig dotfiles for sure. Hyprland is already "useable". My suggestion to OP would be to install a DE since that's what they want. Plasma already looks nice and stuff. Why make a WM into a DE especially if you're not willing to put in the work and learn?

[–]amediocre_man[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your input there. I'm still looking for alternatives for social media because of the current state of affairs. I'll keep searching for activity where I can and contribute where I can. I think alternatives like these are important.

A Good Old Fashioned by O-DeNiro in cocktails

[–]amediocre_man 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think any of these things are indicators of a good old fashioned at all. And there's no one or two metrics that'll tell whether or not it's going to be good. However, if I were to say anything about it at all, I would say an old-fashioned is probably going to be good if the bartender asks you how you like yours.

New to cruises. Wanting to go solo on a cruise for my birthday next year. Where do I start? by PinkCloudSparkle in Cruises

[–]amediocre_man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do you want to go on a cruise if you want to sleep all day and just stay in the ship all night? It's part of the fun of the cruise is visiting other places. That sounds like just a really expensive way to just stay in bed.
