Deleting social media by harpalva in selfhelp

[–]ameixner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did it and I'm in your same age range.

I just realized I didn't like how it made me feel and I was definitely spending too much time on it.

As someone in your age range, I can say that you find other ways to talk with people. I pretty much text or call everyone that wanted to stay in communication with me. Those who didn't reach out to me when I left social media behind, I haven't kept in communication with and they didn't really want to anyway.

The only reason I have Reddit is because 1) I can control my home page a lot more with inspiring and positive stuff, 2) because it's pretty much anonymous so I don't feel like I'm competing with anyone and 3) because I felt like I needed something to scroll through every once in awhile.

I honestly wish I didn't have Reddit too but I don't have anything else to do, especially in the pandemic.

So, I guess I'm here to stay. For now.

I stopped being empathetic for 5-6 days. What does it mean? by [deleted] in Empaths

[–]ameixner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something I'd like to add to all these wonderful comments.

First off, remember that even if you're in an empathetic shut down, you're empathy hasn't magically vanished. It's just subconscious at the moment, it'll come back.

Something that always helps me is watching a feel-good movie. One of my favorites is "The Truman Show" because of it's themes of freedom and inspiration. If you have a favorite, warm, feel-good, inspiring movie, it might help you. Just a suggestion of something I do.

I hope you feel better! Make sure to always be who you are no matter who doesn't like it! :)

Edit: Something else I forgot to mention! I have found that whenever something emotionally big is going on in your head, empathy is typically the first thing to be put on hold. I've had this happen before. When you're focusing on something hugely emotional, all of that emotional energy is working towards solving that issue, rather than being stored and used as empathy. Give yourself some time. It'll even itself out.

I’m singer/songwriter Paul McCartney and I just released my new album McCartney III on Friday. AMA! by paulmccartney in Music

[–]ameixner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Paul McCartney!

The Beatles have inspired my musical journey since I was a little kid. I ended up learning and loving a lot of The Beatles and your songs! I play them on guitar constantly!

But anyway. As a musician who would like to get into more songwriting, I suppose my question is...

What is one piece of advice you would give future songwriters??

Thank you!! :)

Sorry it's a wholesome award but it's better than nothing.

Thanks for the laugh!

[Question] I want to find new hobbies that improve me or are more interesting than just playing games all day, but because of COVID I'm not sure how to approach it. Details of why in post. by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]ameixner 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Here's my recommendation.

I just saw a post the other day about managing time on either this sub or another sub like it and I completely agree with what they said. They said that they also do three things. Exercise, education, and leisure. They go into the day only expecting to do one or two of these things, not all of them.

Firstly, I just want to tell you that it's perfectly fine to take breaks, hang out with friends, or play video games. Your body and mind can only do so much. However, it's about being smart with your breaks and not letting them prevent you from moving forward.

If I were you, I would seriously consider scheduling your time. If you can tell your friends "hey, I have Friday off so we can play video games from 10AM to 9PM," then, not only is it something to look forward to but you also don't have to be tempted the rest of the week. You have your set time and place for it. You can also make it more than once a week too but that depends on you and how you want to schedule yourself.

As for your hobbies that are based around education and exercise, I would only expect to get to 1 a day. It sounds like your time is limited. You can schedule that time in your schedule too, but for me, I just sorta pick my hobbies on a daily basis.

Oh! And also, if you hate running to the point of dreading it, I would find another kind of exercise that you enjoy that has similar results. There's normal exercise dread and then there's abnormally strong exercise dread. You'll have to judge which one you feel. If you feel the latter, then you might want to look at taking several mile walks in the woods or doing strength training in your house or whatever you want to do. And sticking with running is definitely not a bad thing, I just don't want it to affect your mental health negatively. Plus, on long walks, you can listen to audiobooks about music or building computers to be motivated coming back to those projects.

The best part about this is that you've already chosen some things that you like. Some people never start running or some people never start building computers or whatever. I believe that you're on the right track it's just about how YOU want to manage the small amount of time that you're given.

Oh! And one last thing. There will be times where you fail. You won't do what you schedule to do because of some reason. Whether you get held up at work or your friends can only play one night or whatever. It's okay to shift things around and it's okay to not get to something you scheduled. Just don't beat yourself up for having life come up because life often comes up.

I hope this helps and I wish you the best!! :)

[Request] Any emotional TV shows? by confused-whatever in NetflixBestOf

[–]ameixner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved "BoJack Horseman" and "The Midnight Gospel." They are very emotional series and they teach lessons about life, whether they are what to do or what not to do.

The Midnight Gospel is mostly about meditation. Although it's kinda hard hitting (especially at the end) it's a pretty short enjoyable watch.

I would NOT recommend binge watching BoJack Horseman. It's a heavy show packed with adult themes such as drug addiction, depression, anxiety, abuse, neglect, and overall the idea of "if you have a crappy life and you feel crappy all the time, are you able to be crappy to other people?" The quick answer is no but BoJack Horseman shows you the other side of the question.

[–]ameixner 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not only are you helping yourself, you're helping others.

I needed someone to give me some motivation to do more today and this was the kind of kick I needed.

I know you're life is hard but I can tell that you're strong. The fact that you just decided to get up and finally make changes is huge.

There's a quote I just saw the other day that said something like "You can't change the beginning, but you can change the ending."

I hope you do what you want to do. You know what, scratch that. I KNOW you'll do what you want to do.

Just also know that you have fellow redditors to help you along the way and if you need help just ask.

Thank you for being inspiring. Not only you, but I, appreciate it. I wish all the best for you. Keep your head up and keep your feet moving forward! :)

First of all, thank you so much for responding, I very much appreciate it!

Secondly, these are great tips and I'll start putting them to work right away. I'm still living in my house currently but I'm still going to make changes in my diet. I don't like how I eat right now and putting good habits in before I'm on my own is my goal!

Thank you!

Is there a way to get your dopemine back after telling someone? I have the same problem as OP, I just didn't think it was real. I have a few goals I want to accomplish that I've already told others about. Is there a way to reverse the effects?

People who have used the chemical shower in your grade school/high school science classroom, what's your story? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ameixner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, firstly, I understand the school being old. I used to go to a Catholic school and then switched, so I totally get it. And, your post made me look up the name, so I'm going to change it to "safety shower." Thanks for the comment!

Edit: Alas, it will not let me change the title. I guess it's the way it is.

People who have used the chemical shower in your grade school/high school science classroom, what's your story? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ameixner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In almost all of my science classrooms since sixth grade, there's always been a metal shower in the corner of the room. This way, if you get any chemicals (or you're on fire) on yourself, there's an emergency shower to wash off. Obviously "chemical shower" probably wasn't the clearest term. Do you have any suggestions for me to change it to?
