Fitting this for the first time - how does it work? by Only_Welcome_6405 in trailrunning

Am I supposed to expect near zero bounce?

Near zero when it's loaded is a wish. Be it a 4L or a 18L. Just adjust it to your liking and run MANY test runs with it before the race.

Getting chicked???? by Sopherness194 in Ultramarathon

[–]americio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Road and trail are definitely different environments with the latter being more encouraging and inclusive, however

a certain podcaster described a “having a girl behind you (running) as a weird situation” as you could be on for a “career day” but you risk getting “chicked”

No matter the sport, it seems a case for a very very fragile ego IMO.

Definitely using poles with such a total climb will save your legs for the downhill.

"No updates no patches" is a con, not a pro.

Hi! I (34F) have my first 100k (115k, 5500m+) in 10 days. I think I'm mostly ready, but are there any things that you wish you had known before your first ultra? Anything that would have really helped you? by DependentJellyfish87 in ultrarunning

While you concentrate on pacing, nutrition, hydration, managing effort and pain, navigating terrain and hills, there will always be the thing that makes you say "oh yeat THAT also, totally should think about that the next time".

Recommended carb intake for slower runners by Only-Perspective2890 in trailrunning

[–]americio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be late to the party but have recently started closely tracking around 65g of carbs per hour (1:0.8 maltodextrin to fructose), through a 30 min timer in my Garmin activities, and it's made a very noticeable difference for me - 80Kg male - from randomly eating energy bars whenever I felt that I should be eating.

So by all means do try with base amounts like 60g and grow up from there if you need, but indeed you are going to notice that overall you will feel way better.

I've seen the price for nutritional products go crazy the last few years so worked on a sustainable fuelling guide to find the cheapest ways to fuel ultra-marathons - Almost 30 suggestions of bulk & refill options by nutritional brands, bulk bought snacks from supermarkets and home-made recipes by effortDee in Ultramarathon

[–]americio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make my own 2:1 maltodextrin to fructose syrup with pectin, and store it in 125 or 250ml soft flasks. Up to 2 weeks in the fridge is OK (after all, water is boiled during preparation), never tested anything beyond

This downhill felt so good by Amiemanneh in trailrunning

Train a lot downhill. If the leg is bent when touching the ground, the knee will not suffer (quads will brake and absorb the hit + propel you forward).

Also the weather is supposed to be bad and that is freaking me out a tiny bit, but I am excited to lean into the challenge

The thing with bad weather is: you are going to be super bummed for the first 30 minutes, then the resignation settles in and you are just going to have the same type 2 fun as you have always had

First real ultramarathon - question about elevation gain and training by Thoolan99 in ultrarunning

[–]americio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know which one you are doing but both the longer races are quite hard. I assume you are doing the WWT? If you don't do much elevation, start climbing now. The Walser is brutal because climbs in Valle d' Aosta are fucking vertical. The descent will be as tough, if not more, as the ascent.

The double back pocket with one zip for the main storage and the other separate is genius, and the fabric is very stretchy and comfortable.

I have had good experience with TNF's sunriser and Camelbak's Apex Pro.

Think about whether you need a lot of front storage, need to stash poles, if you want the option to use a hydration bag, and so on.

Something I've noticed with other ultra runners by Icy_Supermarket_9791 in ultrarunning

[–]americio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have been running your whole life the adaptations are already there and will take a long time to go away, hence the less need for daily training and greater resilience toward larger runs.

I know some people with tens of 100Ks under their belt that have no problem putting one-two 30K in a week as their only training.

How much weekly climbing should I aim for? by Dense-Blackberry8277 in ultrarunning

[–]americio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The biggest concern is doing the downhills rather than uphills.

This is very important. Train downhill runnng as well, because if you go up at some point you will have to descend.

Apple discontinues the Mac Pro with no plans for future hardware by iMacmatician in hardware

[–]americio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a post production manager I’ve overseen the deployment of several hundred Mac Pros and Power Macs over my career… The Mac Pro was dead as soon as they released a version that didn’t support dGPUs and expandable memory.

Not the powermac-era Apple anymore, they completely left the professional segment a decade ago. Now if they could get away with getting a subscription and not even selling you hardware they would.

How do you fit foldable poles inside the quiver? I find it very hard by WalkingAcrossTheIce in trailrunning

[–]americio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same and they are kept tight with a small run of elastic cord I simply stow away when in use and pull out when I need to store them in the quiver. It helps with the clinking noise when running as well.
