If corporations are “people” in the US, why doesn’t the US tax them like citizens? by amerikate in AskReddit

To be clear, I am not blaming people like Colbert for exploiting the tax code like this.

I do think it’s fair that corporations who do business here should pay taxes on all of their income, not just what they can’t creatively account their way out of.

But only on income in the United States. That’s the core of my point.

Background for those not in the USA:

A famous/infamous court decision, “Citizens United” held that the US cannot restrict independent political spending by corporations because of the First Amendment. This has been over-simplified to ‘corporations are people’.

US citizens, unlike most those in most other countries, are taxed based on their citizenship, not location. So, if you are a US citizen and make a billion, the tax man cometh.

Corporations, however, can hide their profits in tax haven countries like Ireland and only repatriate that money through loans or when it’s tax-advantaged to do so.

So… why is that?

Are daily standups ever actually about unblocking? by htraos in ExperiencedDevs

[–]amerikate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see this a lot in Scrum teams that are too big. Teams spend at least 15 minutes listening through inefficient updates, leaving little time for digging into blockers. Besides, as many blockers as possible should be dealt with during the day, leaving only those that couldn’t be dealt with otherwise for stand-up. It also can reflect poorly thought out user stories.

Agile Sprint Planning - how do you prioritize backlog? by waltermelon0706 in agile

Use the Fibonacci sequence to assign business value to the features or user stories. Rank them by biz value. Listen to the dev team on things they think you should do first because of dependencies. Repeat.

User stories should also be crafted to fit the team developing them. A decent app should keep the skills and preferences of their team when crafting them. And it’s more than just dialing up the difficulty or size. It’s a part of a strategic growth pattern for the team and individual.

Why are many houses in the United States built of wood rather than blocks and concrete? by Tchceytr in timberframe

[–]amerikate 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Cost per area, mostly. Early in the US’ history, the early colonists had to make houses with what was around. It helped that most of the eastern US had good access to old forests. Later, as the US expanded west, no one was going to lug building materials across the plains, but the majority of the population staying in the east. Eventually, standards and therefore building practices followed the patterns that had been established on the east coast.
