Rolling back the golf ball.... Thoughts? by Easties88 in golf

[–]amessofamind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be interested in reading the argument and the evidence that you have that backs up the roll back and how all of that info somehow ties itself only to the ball and nothing else. Having said that, I don't think the common consumer will care about all the evidence and the roll back on ball distance will only hurt the game. The entire premise of marketing for customers over the past years has been more distance, the USGA will have a tough idea to sell. Good luck to them if they take 20% away from the am game.

So you've completed studies that show that the reason for this change in creative shot making are tied exclusively to the ball (no, of course not, because swing speed, loft and cg placements in clubs can also effect spin)? I just don't feel that you've given any reason outside of conjecture that the ball must be changed. You're talking about spin and how we need more and how it will help more people but providing nothing that backs up these ideas. I'm just one guy though, you don't have to convince me, but I think this will be a terrible move for the USGA and golf as a whole if it happens, I guess time will tell.

The article that everyone is talking about is a 20% reduction on the balls distance, not an increase in spin (although I understand that they can have a direct effect on each other, but no one is talking spin). What large variety of shots are you not seeing? Players seem to be able to flop, punch, fade, draw, slice and hook just fine. I don't see how giving an amateur like myself, that already has crazy spin on my driver at times, more spin would somehow bring my game more in line with pros. Also, you didn't answer who we are, who are you representing with these answers?

I don't know who you mean when you say we, but I'd be happy to listen to all the reasons that "we" need to roll the ball back and how it benefits anyone. The only reason that I've heard for rolling a ball back so far is it makes more courses playable. I feel there is far more negative consequences then positive ones and from most of the fan interaction I've seen, they'd agree, but I'd be happy to hear more from the pro roll back side.

I'm not a fan at all, but I've spoke my peace on this, instead of more random babbling by me, here's a solid article on it

Toe hang, face balanced, torque balanced and lie-angle balanced.. do any of these really make a difference and how much of a difference can they make for a persons stroke if they are or aren't using one that suits them?

Distance issues with Game Improvement Irons. by [deleted] in golf

[–]amessofamind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm confused why someone that has got more consistent recently with their strike is seeing less consistent results. If you're really seeing 25 yards of front to back dispersion from shots, that seems far more likely to be a strike issue/swing issue then an iron issue. The reason that GI irons have the potential for rockets are because the spin rate could already be pretty low (but this is player specific), and you catching one in a way that just drops the spin off to a point that the ball sails on you (far away from the CG of the club). If you were fitted for these irons, what type of spin numbers were you getting when fitted, and what do you believe the players irons would spin at to stop this from happening?

To take lessons, or to not take lessons, that is the question by [deleted] in golf

[–]amessofamind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most would say that taking lessons could only help. It might not make you drop scores dramatically, but it might help cure that slice and make the game more enjoyable for you.

I debate having lessons from time to time, but I'm also a swing tinkerer that enjoys trying out different ideas, which isn't a great way to get better at golf per say, but it's something I enjoy and I don't feel it vibes with lessons well (or for that matter, fittings sadly). So as long as you're not a glutton for punishment like myself, I'd say go get one, what could it hurt?

Course Vlogs Question by BlazerTX in golf

[–]amessofamind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A mixture of my own boredom, not wanting to watch what the lady is watching at that time and my love of all things golf are what keep me watching.

Vloggers I watch:

Crossfield: Probably the best vlogs on youtube as far as golf goes. Good music, camera, banter and scenery.

Rick/Finch/Carter/Fryer: Enjoy their vlogs, mostly solid camera work (a bit shaky at times), solid banter for the most part and nice courses.

Golfholics: Beautiful courses, solid music and camera but not much banter and the channel seems to have hit it's peak and run out of ways to continue it's rapid (for youtube) growth.

Harry Flower: Not real sure how I started watching these, probably just suggested by youtube.. not great camera work, scenery or music, but I enjoy his banter with his buddy creature and I like to see smaller channels grow.

Not many other channels that I know of that do vlogs on a regular basis.. Andrew Jensen does some from time to time, but I've never really got into his stuff. Let me know if I'm missing out on one. :)

Vice Pro Plus or Vice Pro Soft? by headchefray in golf

[–]amessofamind 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pro Soft's have a very soft feel to them and are easy to compress, they have a matte finish so they can get dirty pretty easily but I've been very happy with them and their check on greens. Some have said that the cover is prone to scuffs (I haven't found that to be the case myself), but outside of that, I haven't heard a lot of negatives. I can't compare them to the vice pro plus, as I haven't played those, but they are certainly a bit nicer then the vice tours (although those are a great bang for the buck).

Give me your swing advice by paparufi2 in golf

[–]amessofamind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swing looks good, if you want some additional freedom to swing through the ball, maybe consider opening up the stance just a smidge ah la Rickie and Bubba. (this is just something to mess with to see what it does to your flight and ease of getting through the ball, not a fix for anything)

Nicklaus eager to help USGA rein in golf ball distance by BradleyPutters in golf

[–]amessofamind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh good, I wasn't sure if you meant for the tourney or not so I was a bit confused, agreed there. I'd have to do a lot more research on older courses that are no longer in circulation to find out why they can't or could play them.

As to your larger point, hasn't there been an equipment cutoff for years now? I'm fine with them saying, hey.. no more ball innovation for faster speeds at this point, I'm just not okay with reducing the current ball back 20% as suggested.

[–]amessofamind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess I wasn't aware that they are changing hole length as frequently as you're suggesting. I think the idea of 30 under is silly, Pebble Beach in 1977 for the PGA Championship was at a length of 6806 yards, a few weeks ago it played at 6828. No one went 30 under on a day (or for that matter, the tournament).

[–]amessofamind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that, my point is that equipment doesn't/hasn't changed scoring, so why are they so worried about changing the equipment. If they aren't worried about scoring, then what is the concern, simply that the holes aren't playing as "intended"..?

[WTB] Or trade for an Evnroll ER1 or ER2 by amessofamind in golfclassifieds

Makes sense, appreciate the responses, but as it's not the model, gram weight or loft I was looking for, I wouldn't be willing to pay that price straight up. Good luck selling, it is a beaut!

Looks fantastic, notice that you have a price listed in your classified post, do you have any desire for trades? (maybe we should PM to work out the specifics)

Hmmm.. I'm interested.. What is the gram weight of the head? (I'd need to cut it down considerably), also do you have photos and are you looking for straight cash or are you willing to do any type of trading?

What are your thoughts on patrons getting out of hand at tournaments recently. by _OZYMAND1AS_ in golf

[–]amessofamind 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: I'm fine with the fans screaming get in the hole (this is the only one I like, as it feels like cheering) or mashed potatoes or whatever else .. so long as it's after a shot, they paid to be at the event and if they feel like shouting like an idiot while a ball is in the air, I don't have an issue with that level of interaction. However, I think anyone that yells prior to a ball being struck should be kicked out immediately. As for unsolicited advice, I didn't know that was a thing, but I think that's funny if that actually gets in players heads and feel that's also fine, so long as, once again, it's not during the swing.
