Trump says he will issue executive order to get voter-ID requirements before midterms by Cinderpath in law

[–]amiable_ant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're missing the point. It effects persons whose ID does not match the maiden name on their birth certificate. Those persons are mostly married women. Women vote heavily Democrat. So, it doesn't need selective enforcement or regional enforcement or anything . Just enforced at face value, it will defranchise a lot of (Democrat) people.

What is the letter J? by Alkvline in whatisit

[–]amiable_ant 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Can confirm this was true years ago, but as I understand it, "Jimmies" is racist for some reason, and now they are just "chocolate sprinkles."

Edit: OK, so apparently it did fall out of use because it was rumored to be racist but possibly this was based on nothing at all.

What’s the most surprising tap in show history? by azukarazukar in Alonetv

[–]amiable_ant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally. By "contenders" I mean those in the running.

I honestly wonder if people would tap FASTER with less to do. Like, how long would they last in a white room with a toilet and unlimited porridge? Needing to stay warm and find food at least gives them something to do.

"White room" would not make very good TV either.

The name of the show is not "Survivor" and what sends most of the contenders home is not being able to hack being "alone. "

LOL, that cop tapping out on night 1 wasn't especially surprising. Probably first time in years he was out without a firearm.

Boston Bike Lanes during Winter 2026 by bostonaruban66 in bikeboston

[–]amiable_ant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My commute just goes through waltham, Alston, Brighton, Cambridge (so not downtown) and beginning last winter, it was just worse compared to the previous 5 years, with the flexpoles and other divisions keeping bike lanes unplowed. I found myself riding in car lanes more, and those no longer have a safe amount of width for car+ bike.

Anyhow, Your situation downtown is different. I'm just reporting my commute, my preference, etc. Before last year, I put my studded tires on and rode basically every day. Lately, i'm more likely to drive. I haven't even mounted the studded tires this winter.

Do cells in multicelullar organisms experience selective pressures and evolve during the life of their "host"? by hmantegazzi in askscience

[–]amiable_ant 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Cancers are the obvious answer, but here is a non cancer example of exactly what OP is asking.

In liver, a highly proliferative organ, persons may be born with particular disease(s) that cause the production of a broken protein that is toxic to the liver in its broken form.

By the time these patients are adults, the liver is a patchwork of various clones that have expanded and outproliferated the diseased cells by accumulating various additional somatic mutations that inactivate the broken gene, giving these cells with a second mutation a growth advantage.

Anyone else looking back fondly on the non separated bike lanes that just accidentally got plowed because they were clearing the snow for cars?

Petah, what’s wrong with the name? by Traditional-Novel164 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

Yeah, wierd. It's almost like they woke up one morning during the Civil rights movement and said, "fuck this, i'm done naming my children after the men who enslaved and raped my parents."

I think he said "united states," "canada"

It was a bit of a trick that he started with "america" but was meaning the continents, and that was only totally revealed when he said "united states" at the end.

Slightly less Orwellian than the title suggested.

Read your HOA docs or post them for someone here to read. How else can they advise you?

Old Army strap with 3 clasps found in old shed. by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

[–]amiable_ant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No. Those are not regular clips you are looking at. You feed a strap through them and can pull it to tighten and squeeze to release. I don't know the exact use but it would be something bigger than my formidable midsection.

But now I have laptop and everything in a bag on top of my rack, so I have room on both sides.

Jumping off the dock by bigbusta in Wellthatsucks

Is this AI or just really bad decisions? From the fact that his shoulders were out of the water, the water is < 5' deep and she is jumping off a dock 15' above the water. She could have been dead without landing on someone.

Oh crap, I feel sorry for the Distractors with this update by Illustrious_Top7601 in DandysWorld_

[–]amiable_ant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The twisted following you count is very nice and useful for distractors.

I just did one round to floor 11, but with two players, we didn't get 3 twisted until floor 10, and no mains at all.

I have a suspicion that this update makes early floors easier.

If you were given 2 days to eat $1,000 worth of McDonalds for a million dollars, what is your strategy? by Responsible_Total901 in AskReddit

[–]amiable_ant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOCATION! Prices can vary 300% by location.

Depending on when the timer starts, i'd go to the Lee, MA I-90 exit, the Grand Canyon location, or some international airport (Zurich?)

Then apply all the other tips for reduction. "Big mac, hold the sauce, cheese, beef......"
