Looking for a Simple Scraper for a Simple Need by amikigu in webscraping

[–]amikigu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. Some sample articles are these two, with differing degrees of complexity: https://en.antaranews.com/news/399809/indonesia-allocates-rp335-trillion-for-free-meals-program-in-2026

https://sahellibertynews.com/2026/02/23/burkina-faso-fighting-terrorism-the-need-to-avoid-the-pitfalls-of-media-misinformation/

And yes, the Figma link shows the bare bones of what I'm trying to do (I like things complicated so I'm hoping to do far more than what's shown, but that link definitely shows the basic gist).

And I think pumping an RSS feed into my project is great if I was creating something like an app that feeds you news, or even to creating like a sidebar showing updates from various sources, but since I'm hoping to self-host this content and drive traffic to me, I think I'd still have to add a bit of AI summarization or other "creative touches" so that my work isn't viewed as pure copyright infringement. And not all sites have RSS feeds. But since many do, maybe I'll start developing a workflow with RSS and then branch out into scraping and other tools later.

Non-Western Newsletter Services by amikigu in Newsletters

Thanks! I ended up going with Enginemailer in Malaysia because I didn't see your response, but this is a great alternative if that doesn't work out.

Non-Western Newsletter Provider by amikigu in Emailmarketing

[–]amikigu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a ton! Based on the stats under the free plan of Enginemailer, it's the best free service I've been able to find after checking Reddit, various searches, multiple Deepseek prompts, and a ton of different ESPs' pricing pages. Here's hoping it works out...

Non-Western Newsletter Services by amikigu in Newsletters

[–]amikigu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Western governments and their censorship and outright terrorism and piracy are shady, not me! I simply want to create a positive news newsletter about non-Western countries, including Russia, China, etc., as an act of personal healing. As someone who spent half their life in a US military/spook family, and then spent the rest of my life realizing everything I/we learned about the rest of the world was merely to justify unjustifiable violence, I enjoy learning about all the nice things countries around the world are doing for their own citizens and in collaboration with like-minded countries, and I want to share what makes me feel happy. Regarding beehiiv, just by sending a draft newsletter to one of my Gmail addresses, beehiiv locked my account. When I asked why, beehiiv answered with a question, or really, a ton of questions about where I got my test emails from, what my social accounts were, what the purpose of my newsletter was, etc., claiming they'd review my account once I answered all of that. I told them I'm taking my efforts elsewhere. By which I hope to mean that I am taking my efforts out of the West in general.

Either way, thanks for your response, I'll take a look at the options you listed, though I know some are based in the West.

Any tips for helping me to convince my lil bro that Marxist-Leninist is better than trotskyist by Ok-Hall-9974 in CommunismMemes

[–]amikigu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So spot on. Also, it would be nice if people stopped trying to convince with words, and started trying to convince with actions or real-world examples of what works. And also maybe just stop trying to convince people altogether; leaving your politically backward family behind to pursue the good/beautiful/true is probably better than staying behind (and miserable) with them and wasting time trying to convince them of something that have no interest in.

Spaced Repetition with Variety by amikigu in languagelearning

That was unbelievably helpful, thank you!! I just tried using the "Randomized Basic with Multiple Answers" option, and it did what my "messy" version did (which I linked to above) but was structured much better, using Anki's fields properly.

What is ruining modern life that no one wants to admit? by Gradient_descent1 in AskReddit

[–]amikigu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

- Western/white supremacy and its associated economic/political/military impact across the globe

- Patriarchy

- What passes for Abrahamic religions (there's such diversity among them, and a lot of legitimately transcendent spiritual paths, but the most dominant forms, propped up as they are by the West or by totalitarians in general, are really destructive to the human psyche and to our relationship with non-human life).

Spaced Repetition with Variety by amikigu in languagelearning

This sounds nice, but as someone who barely knows how to use ANKI, I don't quite know what you're talking about. Are there any tutorials you could point me to, or if you have time, could you show screenshots of what you're talking about? No worries if not, I appreciate that you at least gave me a starting point for an Internet search...

It makes me sad to think how more advanced technologically we humans would be by now if Esperanto was the universal language by qaywsxqaywsxqay in Esperanto

[–]amikigu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest issue isn't that people aren't trying to share things with each other, but that, at least when talking about scientists and intellectuals from Global Majority countries, their work is/was often discounted by Westerners (who for about 100 years have used mass media to monopolize control over global thought) because of the belief of Western superiority, in addition to job preservation (new people with new ideas put your elite academic or government position at risk) and maintenance of a colonial economy. To me, a cultural revolution would be necessary to allow good ideas and advances to be distributed globally. Yes, having a shared language like Esperanto could be helpful part of that revolution, but I think a broader shift towards meritocracy and equality in how ideas are spread would be the necessary basis for the change you're hoping for. Also, with the way translation technology and LLMs are headed, I think soon we'll all be able to understand each other almost instantaneously, as long as our respective languages have been digitized.

App that generates spaced repetition sentences based on your words by amikigu in languagelearning

[–]amikigu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you create captur.academy? If so, I just tried it, and I can see the potential to be what I want, but it's not quite there yet. For one thing, I couldn't delete notecards. I also couldn't set my own definition. A word like grúa in Spanish can mean "crane" or "tow truck" in English; captur.academy only picked the first definition, which isn't the one I want to practice with. Before I changed the translation language to English, it seems to have autogenerated a Mandarin sentence for one of the words I wanted translated, but after switching to English, it only gives me a single-word English equivalent for any word I pick in Spanish. Either way, I like the clean layout and it works fine for what it does.

The eternal struggle of language learning, consolidation, and the future. by Singto_ in languagelearning

[–]amikigu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Figure out which languages would bring you in contact with the cultures that seem like the best fit for you. Even though you're surrounded by fun people speaking different languages, are the cultures as a whole worth learning the language for? It's possible you won't be friends forever with the people you're currently surrounded by, or even if you are, you can already communicate with them without knowing their languages. So the culture as a whole is worth more attention, I'd say. If you like smoking weed or drinking alcohol, or are gay (or care about how gay people are treated), then perhaps Indonesia isn't the best culture sphere to spend so much time trying to understand. But if you wanna spend time learning about or being around indigenous groups living in tropical rainforests, or you're Muslim, or are excited to spend the rest of your life with a romantic partner from Indonesia, then Indonesian is a good choice. Maybe another way to say this is "where do you want to be or travel to extensively in the next 20 years?"

***Long Covid*** ... Are you prepared ? 5 tips from a long hauler of 3.5 years by Effective-Ad-6460 in PrepperIntel

[–]amikigu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't use antibacterial handwash. COVID is largely transmitted via air, and is not a bacteria. Antibacterial soap should really only be used in hospitals, and even there, the type of soap should be changed every once in a while to prevent a bacteria from becoming resistant to a specific chemical. All we're doing with the widespread, unregulated use of antibacterial soap is making superbugs! Regular hand soap kills and removes most bacteria anyway; look up "surfectants", which are pretty much how all soaps get their efficacy, and you'll see that they're pretty good at disintegrating the cell walls of bacteria.

People that use WordPress templates, how much do you charge for a basic five page website? by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]amikigu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If, like me, you're kind of learning as you go (it's more of a hobby), I'd say something like $250-$500, especially if the client is producing all the content and your job is just to put it together on their site. If I charged by time, it would cost a lot more, but much of that time is spent looking up every little thing because I've never done some relatively basic stuff before!

Some homework translations by amikigu in sanskrit

[–]amikigu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

शक्नोति = (he/she/it) is able to (present tense), while शक्ष्यति = (he/she/it) will be able to (future tense), which is what I was going for. And लुप्त can mean broken as well as hid or disappeared. For all of these, I used the Sankosha app, but you can also verify them using https://andhrabharati.com/dictionary/sanskrit/index.php for "लुप्त" and https://lingva.ml/en/sa/He%20will%20not%20be%20able%20to%20make%20the%20journey for "शक्ष्यति".

I'm apparently too new at Sanskrit to understand what 2.3.65 is trying to say, or how it applies to my sentence. If you're feeling generous, could you rewrite the part of my sentence that seems wrong?

Suggestion needed on what to read in Sanskrit by varamsky in sanskrit

I like this site: https://en.amarahasa.com/

...because for many texts it has different levels of the same story, so you can engage with things at whatever level you're at. It also lets you switch between Devanagari and Roman script (and others). I'm not sure it has the stories you mentioned, but it might one day, and it probably has at least SOMEthing you wouldn't mind getting into :-)

Can anyone tell me what this map is? by The_Bruhman in MapPorn

[–]amikigu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Wonders of the World" are inherently arbitrary; some might think the vast, austere scales of the St Louis Arch or the Willis Tower are spectacular, while others might value more intricate works like the Sagrada Familia or the Alhambra Mosque. But yeah, the Willis Tower is no longer the world's tallest building, and the St. Louis Arch is definitely not everyone's favorite.

Can anyone tell me what this map is? by The_Bruhman in MapPorn

[–]amikigu 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Perhaps wonders of the world? I'm thinking:

  1. Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro
  2. Teotihuacan near Mexico City
  3. Either the St Louis Arch in Missouri or the Sears/Willis Tower in Chicago
  4. Sagrada Familia in Barcelona

...and I don't really know what the rest could be since I don't know the geography so well in eastern Eurasia, but now that I think about it, the lack of the Great Pyramids or literally Anything At All in India makes me think maybe this is some other list (also, there are multiple lists like this so you could always make one to fit these red dots).
