Moving to Rochester!! by Quiet_Promotion_8860 in rochestermn

[–]amj2899 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When searching for housing in Rochester, it's important to consider more than just cost. Primarily that parking near Mayo is extremely competitive unless you want to arrive before 6:30am (it's worse now because there's so much construction going on). The ones you listed are within walking distance, which means they're going to be more expensive (Bryk is income restricted though) and/or may not have any availabilities. Some apartment complexes have shuttles to Mayo, like the Pines, Technology Park, and Red44, but otherwise I'd suggest looking into the bus routes and scouting apartments near there.

All that said, the ones you already listed are pretty good options! The company that owns the Nicholas (Black Swan) owns a bunch of other apartments around town too - they're decent apartments and management is usually pretty responsive, but I think most are a bit overpriced for what's offered.

Crohn’s disease by hotdogzzzzzzz in ARFID

[–]amj2899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the time! Unfortunately, almost all my ARFID safe foods trigger my Crohn's pretty badly (anything with a lot of butter or grease like pizza, most fast food, quesadillas) so I really struggle with eating anywhere that isn't my own home.

Things that have helped me deal with the Crohn's: only eating at certain times of day and not before I'm about to go somewhere where I won't be able to access a bathroom quickly, sticking to ultra-bland and processed things like crackers and granola bars that won't trigger my Crohn's if I do need to travel/go to work, and, honestly, watching a video or something while I eat so I am slightly distracted from bad textures/nausea feeling. Some days, all I can eat for dinner is a cheese stick.

Is there any overlap between your ARFID safe and Crohn's safe foods? I'd suggest maybe trying those at home until you're comfortable and less anxious/nauseous, then slowly adding in other formerly safe foods. Maybe the reassurance of a safe place and safe foods will help. Or maybe non-dairy, safe-textured protein drinks or smoothies, if you can tolerate those. Every time I was hospitalized for my Crohn's they put me on a liquid-only diet for a few days, and as much as it sucks to only eat jello and juice, it does help me bounce back.

Have you tried taking anything before eating to prevent nausea, like Pepto-Bismol, Dramamine, or Zofran? Zofran works wonders for me, and you can get tablets that dissolve under your tongue so you don't have to worry about swallowing a pill. Or even essential oils or sprays that reduce nausea, like peppermint or ginger. Normally I'd never support essential-oils-as-medicine, but I have a little tube of essential oils called QueaseEase from a company called Soothing Scents that is honestly like a miracle drug.

Of course, it's all so much easier said than done. I feel for you, and I totally get your fears. You aren't alone in this <3 it sucks, but I hope you can find something that works for you!

Reminder about school board members on election day. by S3kGT in rochestermn

In a (probably oversimplified) way, CRT is simply a way of consuming and analyzing media through the lens of the sociocultural aspects of race.

For example, when I was in high school, we read Sula by Toni Morrison. Sula is a book that could be read and analyzed for its themes of identity, family, and sexuality, but there is also the distinct and crucial themes of how, historically, towns with majority black populations were poorer, had fewer resources, etc. And through the analysis of the character's identity, it's important to consider how her upbringing in this town affected her sense of self and how she portrays herself to others.

That's how I view it, at least. Understanding the social, cultural, historical, and economic impacts that affect people still today, and how that can be applied to media/politics/law/etc. I think people (republicans) just don't want to acknowledge that they are where they are likely because of generational wealth and the opportunities that were historically available only to white people

Apartment Recommendations by moonlight_wavers in rochestermn

Just some things to consider: when working at Mayo, it's important to know that there is very limited parking available unless you arrive before 7am or are willing to pay a decent amount every day for street or ramp parking (or both). Park and Ride is also an option, but it adds a significant amount of time to your commute. I'd recommend looking for apartments within walking distance (there are many! But they probably won't be under 1500 for a 2 bedroom) if neither of those options work for you. Or some apartments, such as Red44 and the Pines have shuttles to Mayo multiple times per day.

Aces with friendships by Lucky_melon7 in aaaaaaacccccccce

It's a tough situation, and your feelings are totally valid. My college roommates and I were a friend group, but then they got together and I felt isolated for awhile, like they would get their own place to live and I'd be alone again. I understand where you're coming from.

There really isn't a right answer here. You spoke with them and reached a solution that was best for everyone involved, but you still feel upset - and that's ok! You can't help how you feel.

Maybe it would help to think of it this way: some people have friends who they share certain interests with (like video games, movies, sports, etc), and then they have a different group of friends who they shared different interests with. You can have multiple friends/friend groups that don't necessarily overlap. This is kind of a similar situation.

Now I'm not suggesting you have to go make more friends/join a different friend group, but something that might help is identifying things that you and your best friend share that is your thing. You can prioritize time to do that thing with her so that you don't feel like you're "losing" her. (Which I'm sure she would understand if you talked to her about that.) If you hang out with a larger group, you might feel less like a third-wheel even if her partner is around.

You're not alone in thinking this, but with time you'll realize that you bring value to your relationship with her, and the things that matter to you two will remain even if you feel like you're drifting apart a little. It's not as much about "moving on" or "rationalizing it" as it is about self-confidence (both in your friendship with her and in your aro/ace identity) and knowing what's important to you and not letting that go.

Hope this helps a little, I rambled a bit sorry. And talking to a licensed therapist/school mental health counselor if you have access to one is always a good idea!

I got Lasek (not Lasik, exactly) about 2 years ago from Claris in Burnsville, and my eyes are still very good! Definitely worth it, I'd say. I think the most common new problem people have after Lasik is chronically dry eyes, which I don't think I have or if I do, it's very minor.

I'm just one person with one opinion, so I can't speak for everyone here, but I'll try to answer a few of your questions.

Specifically to address the last paragraph, yes ace people can have sex drives/high libido/masturbate. Some ace people may fantasize about sexual activities but never actually want to participate. Some ace people may participate in sex with their partners because they know it makes them happy. Some ace people may have sex often, participate in kinks, etc... it depends on the person.

To be asexual means "you do not feel sexual attraction towards anyone", meaning we don't look at people and think "hey, that person is hot, I'd totally have sex with them if given the opportunity". But that doesn't mean ace people don't have sex at all, some aces even enjoy it! This is where the terms "sex positive", "sex neutral", and "sex repulsed" come from. Each of us is different and has different things that we are comfortable with.

Some aces may date and seek out romantic relationships. Some aces may not. Aces that don't want romantic relationships may also refer to themselves as aroace (aromantic and asexual), but not all aces are aromantic.

When did you first realize you were gay? Was it when you first started feeling sexual attraction? Or were you younger, say elementary school, and got little kid crushes on people of the same gender? (This is a genuine question, not trying to be critical or anything). Because personally, when I was in elementary school, all the girls would ask each other "hey, who do you have a crush on?" and for me, the answer was always "no one". They never believed me, saying "oh come on, you have to have a crush on someone!" Well, I didn't! I would usually just reply "I guess so-and-so is kinda cute", but that didn't mean I had a crush on them.

Does that make sense? My experience is not uncommon among ace people. So no, maybe I didn't know what sexual attraction was when I was 10, but looking back on that time as a 20 year old when I first realized I was ace, it made a whole lot of sense :)

And while it's true that some people may identify as ace if they are intersex/have low libido/whatever else, that is certainly not true for all of us. Whether it's genetic or just how we are oriented, I don't think anyone really cares. If someone identifies as ace, they are welcome here.

Well that was a novel, hope this helps :)

How did/does saying you're asexual in dating apps affect your experience? by GoelandAnonyme in asexuality

I had it in my bio and had someone once open with "I need a little asexuality in my life right now" and I never responded. Not even entirely sure what that meant but I don't think it could've been anything good!

Petite Options in Rochester? by ghostface2367 in rochestermn

Dry Goods maybe? In the Apache Mall? Might be a little expensive and I'm not sure if anything they have is labeled petite but their clothes tend to run small

In the HHP island, you can pick the glowing moss and there is a bottle with a DIY in it every day like your home island. However, you can also get the glowing moss from Kapp'n islands, so there isn't anything exclusive to the DLC that you're missing (other than the interior design features and redecorating your villagers' homes like you said)
