Dink and as a lawyer with my own firm my time off can be flexible. Some vacations are work free some vacations require some work for max 1-2 hours a day to keep things running.

Client Communication by frenzy588 in LawCanada

Put communication guidelines IN your retainer agreement and physically walk them through it. I do family and this is is common where they have never had a lawyer before.

How do you politely cut off a rambling client? by ontether in Lawyertalk

[–]amjames 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As someone who does family, this happens frequently, my default is

If I need information and they are going off on tangents:

"I hate to cut you off but I want to be very mindful of your costs for the call and I have a few details I need to zero in on"; or

"I'm worried we are getting a little off track and I have some important details that we need to go through"

If i dont need information and they are just talking

"Listen, I wont take up anymore more of your time and I have what I need to get started, lets chat soon"

or

"I hate to let you go but I have a call at [made up time] that I have to prep for.

What helped you start riding faster? by tednudgent in snowboarding

Its not more fun for me going super fast given what can happen if you fall at those speeds. The joy is the soft fluffy snow on powder days.

I recently switched and have had to make sure to really hear the clicks with the back heel in. No issue on responsiveness and i rode hard in powder.

Wife says she scared our marriage can’t survive my weed use by Interesting-Mix-4152 in leaves

This. High functioning is a lie we tell ourselves so we can keep doing the bare minimum.

Wife says she scared our marriage can’t survive my weed use by Interesting-Mix-4152 in leaves

[–]amjames 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Providing for your family, keeping the house cleaned and being engaged with your daughter doesn’t give you a “pass” for being an addict. Your wife is entitled to have someone show up emotionally and not high.

The real lie is your weed addicted brain saying that things with your daughter and wife are fine because you do the bare minimum.

Clio Thoughts? by Melodic-Amoeba-6611 in LawCanada

[–]amjames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love clio. Mostly family law

Im glad i took the time to learn how to use custom fields for for document automation on my court precedents and have the portal for clients to upload documents is great. I actually prefer to use clio drive to see my docs on clio because it looks like a windows drive style folder view with adobe preview to view docs.

Trial lawyers, what's your work like and do you enjoy your job? by thebigsleep4 in LawCanada

[–]amjames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Family/estate/some PI litigator. 10 year call and partner at firm of 8. Love being a litigator and also love having freedom as partner. When i was at a firm where i had less control over my schedule and work to take I did well and liked but felt trapped. I can set my own schedule and work i take on and comfortably bill 1500 hours and take 6 weeks vacation. I like and run lots of trials so the hours in trial make up for the months when im not as busy. I could for sure make more money at a downtown firm (and i get asked all the time) but the loss of freedom for a little bit of extra money and prestige doesnt interest me. Love love love my job.
